To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, GLEN W. INEBNIT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Goshen, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Slidable-Section Step-Ladders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will. enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in step ladders and especially in the provision of slidable section step lidders so arranged that the extensible part may be automatically locked and held in an adjusted position.
The invention comprises various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the acco1npanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a step ladder made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, showing a top plan view of a locking bail and projections upon the sliding part of the ladder. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 33 of Fig. 2, and Fig. t is a sectional view showing the guide for the sliding section of the ladder.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a fixed section of the step ladder which has laterally projecting bars B fastened thereto and flanged at their upper ends, which flanges are flush with the upper ends of the side bars A and upon which the top step D is fastened. Legs E are hinged at their upper ends to said plates B and are pivotally connected together by means of the hinged braces F. A shelf H is fastened to the flanges of said plates and a bail-shaped locking member N is pivotally mounted upon the pins N upon said shelf and is adapted to swing over the inner edge of the shelf and rest upon said flanges.
The slidable section of the ladder is designated by letter O and is provided with Specification of Letters Itatent.

steps and a cross-piece K at the top, the end of which project beyond the ends of the sides of the slidable section ladder and are adapted, when said section 0 is at its lowest limit, to rest upon said flanges and form a support for the slidable section 0. Bars Q, which are beveled. as at Q, are fastened to the sides of the slidable section 0' with corresponding beveled ends project ing beyond the longitudinal edge of said sectional ladder and which are adapted to engage said bail-shaped member as the sectional ladder O is raised, the beveled parts of the bars coming in contact with the under edges of the load-shaped member N causing the ladder to be raised until they pass by the bail, after which the ladder will fall by gravity to rest upon the flanges and, when the sectional ladder U is lowered, the under ethics of said bars will come into contact with and rest upon the upper edge of the bailshapcd member, thus forming a secure support for the sectional ladder O. In order to allow the projecting end of said bars Q, to freely pass through the shelf H, the latter is notched as at J.
Guide members, designated by letter S, have contracted shank portions S which are fastened to the opposite sides of the ladder A and which serve to guide the slidable sectional ladder O as it is raised and lowered, each of said guide members having; an angled end to engage over the outer edge of the sides of the sectional ladder O.
lhe operation of my step ladder will be readily understood and is as follows: As the ladder is raised, the beveled'ends of the bars which are secured to the opposite faces of the sides, 0 come in contact with the under edges of the bail-shaped member and cause the same to be raised. After the section O is raised sutliciently to cause the bail to drop, the sect-ion 0 may be lowered so that the under edges of the projecting portions of the bar Q; may rest upon the upper edges of the bail-shaped member, thus forming; a secure support for the ladder (3. ln the event of its being desired to lower the ladder from an adjusted position, the ladder is raised a slight distance in order to allow the bail-shaped member to clear the projecting ends of the bars Q as said member is swung outwardly, after which the ladder 0 may be freely raised or lowered, being guided by the angled plates S fastened one to each of the legs of the fixed or stationary ladder A.
lVhat I claim to be new is A slidable section ladder comprising a stationary section with bars projecting from the opposite sides thereof, legs pivoted to said bars, a shelf with its inner edge notched and supported upon the latter, a bail pivoted to the opposite ends of said shelf and adapted to swing over the inner edge of the latter and normally rest upon said bars, a slidable section ladder mounted to have a longitudinal movement between said shelf and the stationary ladder section, stop lugs upon the slidable ladder section and having ends projeeting beyond the edges thereof and beveled and adapted to contact with the under edge 15 of the bail and pass through the notches in the shelf, said lugs adapted to rest upon the bail to support the slidable section, as set forth.
