Application filed January 21, 1913.
Specification of Letters IPatent.
Patented Dec. 9, 1913. Serial No. 743,392.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, Moro iinrra, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of ll'iassachusetts, have invented new and useful. Tm-
orovements in Indicating-Locks of which.
the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to locks, and particularly to locks provided with indicating means, whereby attention is directed to the fact that a room whose door is provided with the lock, is either occupied. or vacant.
In carrying out the invention it is my pur pose to provide a lock of this character wherein the least number of parts consistent with the proper operation of the device, and which moreover shall embody the desirable feature of simplicity, as well as choapness of manufacturing the device.
With the above recited objects in view, and others which will appear as the invention is more fully understood, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and operative arrangement of parts set forth in the following description and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a door provided with the improved lock, and showing the bolt thereof in a locking position. similar view, the bolt being withdrawn. ll ig. 3 is a similar view but looking toward the opposite side of the door. i is a vertical transverse section taken central of the casing 1 and the mechanism within the door. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the spindle and knob. Fig. 6 is a side view of the lock, the outer plate of the casing being removed. Fig. 7 is an enlarged sectional view illustrating the manner in which the disk 9 is attached to the spindle 152. Fig. 8 is an elevation of the disk 9.
In the drawings like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
A designates a fragment of any door upon which it is desired to attach the indicating lock. The outer face of the door is provided with a casing 1. The casing comprises a rectangular member which has its edges flanged, to provide a hollow body. and integrally formed with the casing and arranged transversely thereof between the longitudh nal flanged edges of the said casing is an additional flange whereby the interior of the Fig. 2 is a casing is divided into what I will term an upper compartment 2, and into a lower compartment 3. One of the side flanges of the casing is formed with a slot or opening l, which provides an entrance or passage to the upper compartment 2. The outer face of the casing is provided with a substantially rectangular opening 5 which is arranged to communicate with the compartment 2, and this opening 5 is normally closed through the medium of a sheet of transparent material (3. The compartment 2 is adapted to receive a card upon which is imprinted the name of the occupant of the room to which the door is attached, or the purpose for which the door is used. The casing 1 has its inner face provided with a plurality of threaded depressions. the same adapted to receive the threaded ends of threaded bolts 7, the latter passing through suitable openings in the door, and providing means whereby the casing is secured upon the door from the inner face thereof, so that the said casing cannot be removed from the door except when the door is in an open position. The lower compartment 3 has its side wall rounded and its inner wall flat, and the casing 1 is formed with a reduced opening 8 which enters the compartment 3 and which is preferably arranged adjacent the lower portion of the wall providing the said compartment.
Arranged within the compartment 3 is an annular disk The disk 9 has its opposite faces flat, and of a size sufficient to snugly engage with the rounded depression forming the compartment 3, and whereby the said compartment provides a journal for the disk. The disk 9 is centrally provided with a hub 10 which is formed with an opening that communicates with a reamed depression upon the outer face of the said disk. The hub 10 may be threaded if desired, and the said hub is adapted to be received within an opening 11 provided upon one end of a cross sectionally square spindle 12. The spindle 12 is further provided with a longitudinally extending opening 13, the same registering with the opening in the hub 10 and with the reamed depression provided upon the outer face of the disk 5). The numeral 14; designates a key which may be in the form of a split resilient pin. the same being formed with a suitable head which is adapted to be received within the reamed depression in the outer face of the disk. The arms provided by the split pin are adapted to exert a pressure one away from the other, or if desired the pin may embody a cross sectionally angular member, in which instance the bore or depression 13 will have its walls also angular. The spindle 12 is provided with a suitable head 14:, and the angular spindle directly adjacent its connection with the head is formed with a cross sectionally rounded portion 15 and the spindle directly beyond the said rounded portion 15 is provided with lug 16.
The numeral 17 designates a plate which is secured upon the inner face of the door. This plate is provided with a key hole opening 18, the same being of sufficient size to permit of the passage of the spindle 12 as well as its lug 16 while the rounded portion of the said opening 18 serves as a bearing for the rounded portion 15 of the spindle. It is to be understood that when the spindle is passed through the opening 18 its hollow end will engage with both the hub 10 of the disk 9 and with the key 14:, thereby effectively sustaining the spindle in a proper relation to the disk, and the disk in a proper position within the compartment 3.
In connection with the above described device I employ a lock '19, the same embodying the usual casing which is adapted to be received within a mortise in the face of the door and to be sustained therein through the medium of suitable securing elements passing through openings provided in the face plate 20. The face plate is further provided wit-h the usual opening which forms the passage for the sliding bolt 21. The bolt 21 is formed with a reduced extension 22 which is arranged within the lock casing, the said extension having an elongated slot or opening 23 through which is extended a guide lug 2a which is arranged upon one of the inner faces of the lock casing. The casing is provided with the usual removable plate 24:, and both the casing and the plate are formed with registering annular openings which provide bearings for the spindle hub 25. The hub 25 has its bore of an angular formation to snugly receive the spindle 12, and to be rotated by the said spindle when the head 1st thereof is operated The hub 25 is provided with a stub key rib 26, the same being adapted to co-act with the walls provided by the depressed upper edge of a tumbler 27. The numeral 28 designates a locking detent which is pivotally connected with the bolt as at 29, the said detent being provided with a lug 30 which is adapted to co-act with the guide lug 24-. The numeral 31 designates a flat spring member which is adapted to exert a tension upon both the tumbler 27 as well as upon the detent 28. This spring 31 forces the tumbler 27 toward and against the stub key rib 26, and also forces the portion of the detent 28 provided with the lug 30 toward and into engagement with the guide lug 2a.
The tumblers 27 and detent 28 may be constructed from a single element, but in the drawings the tumbler has been shown as a separate element from the detent, but the said tumbler is welded or otherwise connected therewith at the portion of the detent adjacent its pivot.
It is to be understood that the disk 9 has its outer face formed into divisions each having an indicating character the said divisions being four in number, and two of the said divisions which are diametrically opposite each other are provided with similar characters, while the divisions arranged between the above referred to divisions are also provided with similar characters which are directly opposite in meaning to the first referred to characters, as for instance: The word In may be arranged in divisions diametrically opposite each other, and the word Out may be arranged in divisions diametrically opposite each other but transverse or at right angles to the divisions provided with the word In or the disk may be provided with two distinguishing colors arranged in the same manner.
From the above description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be noted, that when the knob 14; of the spindle is turned the same will rotate the disk 9 to bring one of its divisions or data into register with the opening 8 in the casing 1, and will, through the medium of the stub key rib 26 actuate the tumbler 27 to swing the detent 28 against the tension of the spring 31 to force the lug 30 below the guide lug 24 to either force the bolt 21 to a locking or to an unlocking position, and, of course. a reverse movement of the knob 1% will bring the next division of the disk adjacent the opening 8 of the casing 1 and reverse the path of movement of the bolt.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. In an indicating lock, the combination with a door, a plate upon the door provided with a key hole opening, a lock for the door, a casing arranged upon the door, said casing having a compartment provided with an annular wall and an opening communicating with the compartment, a disk within the compartment and bearing upon the annular wall thereof, a friction member connected with the disk, a headed spindle cooperating with the lock bolt actuating mechanism, said spindle being provided with a lug adapted to be positioned adjacent the inner face of the plate, and the said spindle having its end provided with an opening which is adapted to receive the frictional member of the disk.
2. In a device for the purpose set forth, a chambered casing provided with an opening,
a disk having a hub and arranged within the chamber and bearing upon the side Wall thereof, a removable pin connected with the disk, a plate having a key hole opening, a spindle arranged within the key hole opening, said spindle being further provided with a lug adapted to engage with the inner face of the plate, and the said spindle having its end formed with a depression for the 10 reception of the hub of the disk and the spindle having its recessed end provided with an orifice for the reception of the pin of the disk.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
