BROOM ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 26, 1912.
Patented Dcc.9,1913.
Serial No. 722,544.
To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that I, AMANDA MCDONALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at (entral City, in the county of Lawrence and State of South Dakota, have invented a new and useful Broom Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to broom attachments.
The object of the invention is to provide a novel, easily applied and exceedingly simple article to be detachably combined with a broom, and in the use of which a cloth of any character may be readily assembled with the broom head and held around the sweeping end thereof, to adapt. it for cleaning and dusting walls and ceilings, for sweeping smooth floors, or for applying a polishing agent thereto.
With the above and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction and combination of parts of a broom attachment, that will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts ;-Figuro 1 is a view in side elevation of a broom head, showing the attachment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective detail view of the attachment. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the clips of the attachment.
The article comprises in part two lengths of webbing 1, which are preferably, though not of necessity elastic in character, and. are double-crossed, and secured together at their points of crossing by rows 2 of stitches to provide a collar or band through which is inserted the handle H of a broom head B, the members of the collar being disposed to engage with the shoulders of the broom head, and thus be held positively from shifting laterally thereon. In other words, there are provided two elastic strips 1 which are folded into U'shape in intersecting planes with their limbs crossing each other, and the crossing portions of the limbs be ing stitched together, whereby the bights of the strips form a collar to surround that portion of the broom head which is attached over the end of the broom stick and to rest on the shoulders of the broom head with the crossed portions lying flatly or snugly against the sides of the Each of has conbrooin head to flex therewith. the free ends 3 of the webbing ncctcd with it a cloth engaging clip, the series of clips being designed to hold the cloth C in position around the sweeping end of the broom head, the effective operation of the article being increased when the webbing is elastic, as the slack of the cloth will be taken up when the broom head is flexed, and thus prevent any disarrangement of the cloth. Each clip is constructed from a strip of suitable sheet metal, and embodies a sleeve t to receive one of the free ends of one of the webbing members, a flat shank 5 and a pair of cloth engaging hooks 6, the latter being disposed adjacent to the free end of the clip and projected toward the sleeve. These hooks are stamped from the metal of the shank and are preferably triangular in form. As a means for accentual'ing the retaining function of the hooks and also to prevent injury to the person positioning the cloth, the terminals of the hooks are curved or deflected inward toward the shank, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. By thus constructing the hooks, all danger of multilating the hands of the operator will be avoided, and the cloth will be held against wen-king loose in use.
Any suitable expedient may be adapted for securing the sleeve to the webbings, the result in the present instance being secured by punching a series of inward projecting teats 7 in one wall of the sleeve, the teats, by sinking into or puncturing the webbing, effecting the secin'e and permanent assemblage of the parts.
In applying the device, after the attachment has been positioned, the piece of cloth is passed around the sweeping end of the broom head, and drawn tightly upward, and the hooks are then engaged therewith, as shown in Fig. 1. In order that the cloth may be held tightly in position, the straws of the broom will lie licxcd or bent to one side when the cloth is being positioned, so that when they resume their normal po-- sition they will exert a strain on the latter which will secure the object sought.
The improvements herein described, while simple in character, will co-act to produce a very effective and useful device for household use.
Vfhat is claimed is:
A broom attachment embodying a pair of elastic strips folded into U-shape in intersecting planes with their limbs crossing each other, the crossed portions of the 10 broom head, and the crossed portions being designedto rest flatly against the sides of the broom head and to flex therewith.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signa ture in the presence of two Witnesses.
AMANDA MCDONALD.
