ROBERT KELLY, OF WEST HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY.
SLED.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RoBnn'r KELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVest Hoboken, in the State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sleds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sleds, and has for its object to provide a sled that is equipped with a braking and steering mechanism, whereby an operator may control the speed of the same or steer the sled in any desired direction.
A still further object is to provide a silnple, cheap and eiticient braking and steering device that may be attached to any make of sled now on the market.
To these ends the invention consists in the novel details of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter de-' scribed and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which like numerals designate like parts in all the views:-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sled equipped with my improved device. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective "iew of one end of the support, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the operating lovers.
The seat 1 is secured to the runners 2 by means of the usual supporting braces 23. A support t is secured to the under side of the seat in any suitable manner and has its ends disposed substantially at points between the side of the runners and the adjacent longitudinal sides of the seat where they have pivotally mounted thereto, operating levers 5 the handles 6 of which are forwardly extended to where they are within easy reach of the operator. The levers are preferably of the shape shown in the drawings and are provided with rearwardly extending shoe portions 7, which portions are disposed below the plane of the seat and are adapted to engage the surface of the ice when the levers Specification of Letters Patent.

are adjusted to their operative position. The levers may be singly or collectively operated and when singly operated, the sled may be guided in any desired direction as is evident. When the lovers are collectively operated, the shoes will contact with the ice simultaneously, thereby regulating the speed of the sled by the pressure exerted by the operator. Each lever -is provided on its inner side with a cam surface S which is adapted to 'lrictionally bind against a similar cam surface 9 mounted on the end of the support, whereby the lever is normally held in an inoperative position.
From the 'l'orcgoing it will be seen that a sled equipped with my improved device can be conveniently braked and steered at the will of the operator and that the mechanism is supported and located in reaching proximity to the operator and disposed substantially in the same general plane with the top of the seat so as to prevent its forming an obstruction to the movements of the body.
It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction and arrangements of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention and therefore I do not wish to be limited to such features except as may be required by the claim.
lVhat is claimed as new is:
A sled provided with a seat, a support secured to the underside oi the seat. cam surfaces on the ends of the support, operating levers pivotally cminected to the ends of the support, and cams on the operating levers for frictionally contacting with the cam surfaces on the ends of the support, said levers adapted to be operated singly or collectively for braking or steering the sled substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I a [iiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT KELLY. WVitnesses J Aims A. Korma, Geo. A. BYRNE.
