UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES HARTLEY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
THERMOSTATIG CIRCUIT-CLOSER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES HARTLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, count-y of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Thermostatic Circuit-Closers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in thermostatic circuit closers, and has for its object to provide an exceedingly simple and efiective device of this description by which when the temperature rises to the danger point the device will be automatically set oil so as to turn in an alarm at the central point, such as the olfice of a big building or a fire station.
lVith these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of my improvement intended as a fire alarm, the side of the casing being removed. Fig. 2, a similar view of the removed cover. Fig. 3, a detail perspective of the retaining lever. Fig. 4, a similar view of the plate for holding the spindle in an elevated position.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, A represents the casing, in which is set the plunger rod B so as to slide therein, and C is the retaining lever which is pivoted at D, its opposite end adapted to swing into the slotted bracket E, and thus be held against downward pressure. In this lever is formed a notch or opening F, over which is soldered the plate G with a solder of such composition that it will melt at a comparatively low temperature, and upon this plate when the device is set rests the nose of the plunger B.
H is a disk secured upon the plunger rod, and between this disk and top of the case is coiled a spring I, adapted to force the plunger downward when the latter is released, and this disk is of sufficient diameter to over Specification of Letters Patent.

lap the disk J secured upon the conducting rod K, the latter being secured in the case and provided with the terminal L, to which one wire of the circuit may be attached, the opposite wire of the circuit being attached to any suitable part of the casing, it being understood that the rod K is insulated from the casing by the insulating collar M. From this description it will be seen that when the temperature surrounding the device has reached the danger point it will fuse the solder holding the plate G to the retaining lever, thus releasing the plunger rod and permitting the spring I to force the latter downward until the disk H comes in contact with the disk J, thus closing the circuit and causing the alarm to ring.
For reset-ting the alarm the lever C may be swung outward and the plate Gr resoldered thereto when this lever will again swing into position to support the end of the plunger rod against the action of the spring I, holding the disk H out of contact with the disk J.
I desire it to be understood that slight changes in the construction and in the arrangement and combination of the several parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention and without sacrificing any of its advantages, provided such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus t'ully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, is
In a thermostatic circuit closer, the combination of a casing, a conducting rod supported by an insulator from the casing, a contact disk carried by the lower end thereof, a spring actuated plunger, fitted to slide in said casing, a contact disk carried by said plunger overlapping the first named disk, and adapted to contact therewith under certain conditions, and means for normally holding the contact disks apart, said means being susceptible to heat.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
J AME S HARTLEY.
