,When a body unit is in its normal horizontal position, the pin I will enter the hole 36 'and lock the segmental gear 23 and also. the legs 18 in the normal positions shown `in Fig. 2 and the pinion 29 will be out of mesh withthe segmental gear as illustrated to the left of the center of Fig. l.
When it is desired to dump one of the body units, it is necessary that the pinion shall be moved into mesh with the segmental gear and that the locking pin 35 shall be shifting of the pinion 27 and the parts movwithdrawn from the latter, as shown at the lefthand end of Fig. 1. -To accomplish the able therewith, a rod 37 is mounted to slide through holes in the track-ways 21 and provided with a-spanner arm '38 to engage the grooved wheel 29,-the forward end of said rod-being connected witha hand lever 39 located in the cab 3 of the vehicle. A spring 40 is fixed at one end and attached at its other end 'to the hand lever 39,-said spring thus tending to force the rod 37 rearwardly :and cause'the locking pin 35 to bear against the faceof the segmental gear (after the latter has been moved from its normal position),v so. that when said segmental gear again arrives`at` its normal position, the
' pin35 will be caused to lock the same and the pinion 27 moved out of mesh with the l said segmental gear.` Separate shifting devices,such as above described will be provided for the operating mechanism for each body unit (a separate lever. 39 being provided in the eab for eachset of such shifting devices) so that any one ofthe body units may be'dumped, or so that any group A.or all of them may be dumped simultaneously. f

vehicle-the direction of such tilting or dumping being controlled by the direction of rotation of the driving shaft 26. The
'shaft 26 may be rotated manually by the application of a suitable crank to the squared end 41 thereof, but we prefer to provide power operated means for driving said shaft, as hereinafter described.
For the purpose of controlling the opening and closing of the gates 10, bars or levers 42 are provided at respective sides of bothend portions of each compartment .body unit. These bars or levers, may be pivotallyconnected with the base portions of vthe brackets 4 or with the base frame 1 and are provided with elongated slots 43, at the lower end of eachof which, a notch or oli'- set portion 43a is formed. Pins 45 on the side flanges or wings of the gates are movable in the slots of the bars or levers 42, and the latter are engaged, under certain conditions, by pins 46 ofthe side flanges or wings of the gates.
When a body unit `is to be dumped, the operator will first operate the shifting devices by manipulation of one of the levers 39, and the operating devices will be shifted to the positions shown at the left of Fig. 1. Assume now, that the body unit is to be dumped to the right asshown in Fig. 43. The operator will cause power to the shaft 26 to rotate the same to the left and thus cause motion to be transmitted to the segmental gear 26 until the left hand end of the latter engages the bottom of the body unit at the left of the pivotal support of the latter. Continued rotation of the 'shaft 26 will cause the segment to continue the tilting of the body unit until the latter assumes the position shown in Fig. 3 and is resting on bumpers 17 provided to receive it. During the tilting ofthe body unit, the
roller 19 at the lower end of the right hand leg 18 will run down the inclined trackway 21, and the left hand leg and its roller will.

As the body unit tilts, the engagement of the lower end walls of the slots 43in bars or levers 42, with the pins 45 of the wings of th'e gate, will cause the latter to be forced open until it assumesrthe position shown at the right cf Fig. 3, with the hooks 15 in engagement with the pins 16,-at which time, the bars or levers will drop by gravity so that the pins 45 will become disposed in the notches 43a of said bars or levers and thus the gate will be locked in open position. The contents of the compartment body unit having been discharged, the operator causes the drive shaft 26 to be rotated in the reverse direction to that above described, thus causing reverse motion of the segment This motion of the segment will be transmitted lthrough the right hand link 24 (Fig. 3) the right hand leg 18, causing the 'roller 19 at` the lower end of the latter to ride upwardly verage thus brought into play, the body unit will be raised until it asstimes a normal horizontal position,--at which time the spring 40, will actuate. the shifting devices as previously described, to lock the segment and move the pinion 27 out of mesh with said segment. During the operations above described for righting the' body unit, the engagement of the notched portions 43a of levers 42 with the pins 45 on the wings of the gate, will cause the latter to be closed and when this has been accomplished, the levers 42 uill be engaged by the pins 46 on the wings of the gate so as to raise said levers and release their notched portions from the pins 45. lVhen the body unit has reached its normal horizontal position, thepins 45 will bear the relation to the slots of the levers 42 shown in Fig. 2. It will be apparent that when the body. unit tilts in one direction,` the pins 45 on the gate at the other end of said body unit, willr move freely in theslots of the levers 42.
We have described the operations of the devices when a body .unit is tilted to the right, as shown in Fig. 3, but it is apparent that when the body unit is to be tilted to the left, the operations above described will be reversed. v
lt now remains to explain the devices whereby power may beapplied to the driving shaft 2G, and such devices are operated and automatically controlled. y
The shaft 26 has keyed thereto, a sleeve 48 (Fig. 4) on which a. clutch member 49 is loosely mounted, and to this clutch membei, a sprocket wheel 5() may beA secured to receive motion from the motor gearing (not shown) which drives the vehicle. Any suitable means may be employed for connecting this sprocket wheel with the motor or its gearing and direction of rotation of said sprocket wheel may be controlled by shifting parts of the motor gearing or reversing the motor, in any well known manner.- A clutch member 5l to coperate with the clutch member 49 is provided with a liub 52 and keyed to slide on andv rotate with `the sleeve 48. A bell crank 52 is pivoted to a y suitable support and one of its arms is bifurcated and connected with the hub of clutch member 5l in' such manner, thatV when said bell crank is moved, said clutch member 51 will be moved into or out of engagement with the clutch member 49. The other arm of the-bell-crank is connected, by means of an adjustable rod 53 with one end of a lever 54 which is pivotally supported between its ends. The other end of the lever 54. is pivotally vattr'iched to one end of a le- 'ver the latter being pivotally supported between its ends and connected at one end with a spring 56, which latter is maintained always under compression. A block 57 is secured to the end of the lever 55 to which the lever 54 is connected, and this block is providedbwith adepending lug 58 having a lateral projection 59. y
A gear 60 is mounted loosely on a suitable shaft 6l and meshes with a pinion 62 on shaftv 26, from which it receives motion. A disk 63 is secured to the gear 69 and is provided witli notches or recesses as indicated at 65, 66 to receive the lug 58. An arm 67 is secured to and depends from the disk 60 opposite the notched portion'65-66 thereof and is provided at its lower end with a V- cam 68 to engage the projection 59 of 4lug 58 and compel the latter to enter the 'recessed portion (S5-66 of the disk, as presently explained.
A small lever 69 is pivotally supported between its ends, and one arm of this lever engages the lever over the spring 56,- a stop 70 being provided on the lever 55 to prevent the lower arm of lever 59 from being moved far enough to become perpendicular tothe lever 55. A rod 71 is connected witlrthe upper arm of the small lever 69 and the forward end of this rod is connected with a suitable hand lever in the ,cab 3.
When any bodyunit is to be dumped in one direction or the other, the operator will set his motor gearing so as to impart motion ,to the shaft`26 in the proper direction, and
he vwill also operate the lever connected with the rod 7l, for the purpose of actuating'the short lever 69 to tilt the lever 55. By this means', the lug 58 on lever 55 will be raised will cause the lever 54 to be tilted and motion-to beimparted through the rod 53 and lbell-crank 52 to the clutch member 51 for causing the latter to engage the clutch member 49, and the driving sprocket 50 to be connected with the shaft 26. Motion is now being imparted to the shaft 26 for accomplishing the tilting or dumping of a body unit, and the disk 63 is being slowly turned, with the lug 58 pressing upon its periphery. Vhen the body unit shall have been sutiicientlytilted, the notched portion 65-66 of the disk 63 will arrive under the lug 58 and the latter will be forced to drop into said recessed portion of the disk by the pressure of the spring 56 against the lever Should it happen that the operator 'failed to release the hand lever connected with the rod 71 when the same was operated as above ,described so that the spring 56 will not now be free to operate the lever 55,engagement -of the beveled projection 59 with the V-cani mounted to rotatewith and slide on said I shaft, each pinion having a sleeve, an arm mounted on each sleeve, means for guiding said arm in its movements with said sleeve longitudinally .of the shaft, a in on each arm to engage and lock the adjacent segment, aplurality of shifting rods connected respectively with the several pinions, a hand loperated device connected with each shifting rod, and a spring for moving each hand operated device and parts with which it is connected in one direction.
