UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES HERMAN VOGEL, OF VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA, ASSIGN OR TO UNDERWOOD TYPEWRITER COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. August 22, 1910. Serial No. 578,457.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CHARLES HERuAN VocEL, a British subject, residing at Vancouver, county of Vancouver, Province of British Columbia, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and useful Typel/Vriting Machine, of which the following is a specification.
The figure is a perspective view showing a portion of the machine looking from the upper front right hand corner.
This invention relates to a new and improved typewriter, and especially to the means for operating the type bars and connected mechanism.
An object of this invention is to afford in a typewriting machine, a light touch by relieving the operator of a portion of the work necessary to actuate the type bars to their fullest extent. This object may be attained by supplementing the action of the finger pressed keys by the action of power means for continuing the movement started by said keys. This power means may be of any suitable character, and in this instance is shown in the form of electro-magnetic means adapted to actuate the type bars and connected mechanism directly and indirectly through the selective magnetic attraction of the electro-Inagnetic means.
A further object of this invention is to provide positive means for holding all of the unactuated type bars in their normal position at rest, while the selected actuated type bar is moving through its stroke. This object may be attained by providing electromagnetic means for retaining by its attractive force, the unactuated type bars in'their normal position at rest.
Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear.
Referring to the specific parts of this invention the member aconstitutes the base of the machine to which the keyboard frame 6, and the main frame 0 and d, are substantially secured.
6 represents one of the several keys for diefi'ected by pressing 6 downward, rotating the bar 9 through the action of the crank f, thus drawing the link i downward through the action of the crank 70, and rotating the journal 70 through the action of crank 7', turning the type-lever Z through a space by which the type m will be brought to the point a, which is at the center of the circular plate on which the several rotating rods, as 70, are mounted, and at which center 72 all of the various type will strike. The rotating action of 9 toward the right will force the plate A to the right by means of the crank 32 pressing against the pm 0 secured in the plate A, thus bringing into contact the electric wires e, and the extension of the electric conductor D from the battery E, closing an electric circuit through the battery, which energizes the electro-magnet and tends to hold all the type at the position of rest adjacent to it. The plate A moving to theright through the action before described also forces the spring r to the right, thus rotating the ratchet wheel a (having teeth around its periphery) to the eX- tent of one tooth, bringing the point of the tooth in cont-act with the shoe '0 forming an extension of the electric wire '0, which completes an electric circuit through the ratchet wheel 8 the wire u and battery :20 and wire '0, thus energizing the circular electro-magnet y, ending to draw the type to the point a, it being understood that there would be soft iron connected with each of the type, which will be attracted by the magnets. This in the accompanying drawing may be the bar Z holding the type in on the type bar Z.
t is a spring to prevent the return motion of s after 1" has turned it to the extent of one tooth.
It will also be understood that in rotating the rod 9 to the right the type m, joined to e by the mechanical parts before mentioned, would be partly raised toward a before the contact between a and D would take place. Consequently the magnetic influence from F on m would be very slight compared with the same influence on the adjacent type; about at the same instant the contact between 0 and u would be completed through 8 and the magnet y would draw the type m very rapidly to its. point a on the platen.
It will be seen that the contact between '2; and u would be immediately broken as the point of the tooth passes the extension from 0, thus allowing the type, through the force of gravity and such springs as may be later mentioned or engaged, and through magnetic influence of F, to return to its position of rest.
While the magnet 'y upon to draw the selected been moved away from may be depended type bar which has its fellows a suifi- Patented Nov. 25, 1913. j
a pin 37 which engages in a cient distance by the depression of one of the keys 6, a more ositive means may be depended upon to ring it up to close juxtaposition to the platen and under the sphere of attraction of the magnet 2 where the last imprinting impulse to the type bar may be, given by the attraction of the magnet y to the metallic portion of the type bar, or any supplementary soft iron armature placed on the type bar.
By a proper adjustment, it will be seen that the type bars can be brought up to, striking position, and attracted at the last portion of the stroke, to give; the desired iinpression which will bein the character of: a pressure stroke rather-than an. impact stroke, thus eliminating considerable noise incident to the operation of the typewriter. The positive means, for raising the type bars beyond the point reached through the actuation of the; keys 6,, will now be described. The; cylinder G, secured. to the frame d, representsan electro-magnet which may be operated from battery 00, through the action of o, s and u, andtobe energized soon after the plateA. has started its movement toward the right, thus attracting the bar attached to B, whichwill engage with the plate A and draw the same rapidly toward the right, facilitatingits rapid movement and relieving theoperator from. theeXertion of such power from the pressure, of the key 6. The pin 9 would also engage on the left side of which previous to the electric circuit energizing G would be raised sufficiently. for such an engagement. WVhile similar pins in the plate A, in connection with similar members connected with other keys and. type would? pass over the tops of said cranks and not afiect them. The action of. pin 9 would,
through a mechanicallprocess tend to raise the type we rapidly to the center a, causing a similar result to, that effected by the magnet y before described.
As. has been stated. above, each key in the set or bank of the typewriter, is operatively connected in the manner described, to the plate A, which is therefore in the nature of a, universal bar, and can bev used to control theescapement of the carriage, (not shown), to feed the same properly, in order to allow for the proper spacing of the successive letters. In order to indicate such an arrangement, the plate A is shown as provided with slot in a rocker 38, pivoted at 39, and having connected thereto a link 40, which communicates with any suitable type of escapement mechanism provided for the carriage.
Variations may be resortedto within the scope of the invention,.and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
