JOHN S. JENSEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TEMPORARY BINDER.

ful Improvements in Temporary Binders, of
which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a temporary binder for books and the object of the invention is to provide a device or" this sort which will be simple and compact in its construction,
consisting of a few parts, which can be quickly and conveniently attached to and removed from the book with which it is used, which will hold the book firmly and securely and will present a neat and attractive appearance and which can be manufactured at small cost.
The invention consists of the new and improved arrangements, devices and constructions herein shown, described and claimed for carrying out the above stated objects and such other objects as will appear in the following description.
The invention is illustrated in a preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a perspective view of the binder; Fig. 2, a longitudinal sectional view taken on: line Q2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a view, in perspective, Oflllle removable plate provided with the book-holding prongs; Fig. t, a cross-sectional view of the same. Fig. 5, a view, in perspective, of a modified device for securing the removable plate to the back strip. Fig. 6 is an end view of the same; and Fig. 7 is a sectional view taken on line 7-7 of Fig. 6.
Like characters of reference designate like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a back strip, preferably made of metal and formed on oppositeends with the inwardly projecting flanges B and O. The back strip is secured to any suitable form of cover D by means of the rivets E or other convenient securingdevices. Fixed to the flange B is a prong, or preferably two prongs, F which are adapted to be thrust in between the pages of the book.
G designates a removable plate provided with a pair of prongs I-I similar to the prongs F. The plate G is secured against the inner side of the flange C by any suitable and convenient device. In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed Ma a 1913.. SerialNo. 765,531;
the removable plate is secured to the flange C by means of a screw I. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 5 to 7, inclusive, the
removable plate here designated G is furwhich the removable plate is secured is formed with a slot K to receive the shank of the-button. On the outside of the flange G is pivoted a clip L adapted to engage the shank of the button J.
While I have described my invention in certain preferred embodiments, it will be understood that modifications might be made without departure from the invention.
In placing the cover on a book the plate G, or G, is first put in place by thrusting the prongs H into one edge of the book. The prongs 1* which are fixed to the binder are thrust into the other edge of the book and the edge to which the plate G or G is secured is thrust under the flange 0, or C, as the case may be. The removable plate is then secured to the flange G by the screw I (Figs. 1, 2 and 3) or by turning the clip L (Figs. 5, 6 and 7) so that it engages the shank of button J.
It will be seen that Where two prongs are used at each end of the binder they are held rigidly apart so that in adjusting the book to the binder there is no danger that the prongs will tear the leaves of the book. The binder has no projecting parts, it takes a firm and secure hold on the book, and can be very quickly and conveniently attached thereto and removed therefrom.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a back strip, of a bookholding prong permanently fixed at one end thereof, a plate provided with a similar prong, and means for removably securing said plate to the other end of said back strip.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a back strip formed at one end with an inturned flange, of a bookholding prong fixed to said flange, a plate provided with a similar prong, and means for rigidly but removably securing said plate to the other end of said back strip so that it stands at right angles thereto.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a back strip formed at each end with an inturned flange, of a bookholding prong fixed to one of said flanges, a plate provided with a similar prong, and

means for securing said plate to the flange at the other end of said back strip.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination with a back strip formed at each end with an inturned flange of a book-holding prong fixed to one of said flanges, a plate provided with a similar prong, and means for rigidly securing said plate against the inside of the flange at the other end of said back strip.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination with a cover, of a back strip secured thereto and formed at opposite ends with inturned flanges, a pair of book-holding prongs fixed to one of said flanges, a plate provided with a pair of similar prongs, and means for securing said plate to the inside of the flange at the other end of said back strip.
