Be it known that I, VESTAL REYNOLDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Grant and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Retainers for Overshoes and Rubbers, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

The object of my invention is to provide a retainer for rubbers, etc., which will involve no special construction of either shoe or rubber and which will possess the important characteristics of economy of manufacture and sale, efficiency and ease of manipulation, and to this end my invention consists in the retainer constructed substan tially as hereinafter specified and claimed.

In the accompanying drawingsFigure 1 is a perspective view of a retainer constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the same applied for use.

My retainer comprises a shoe-engaging member in the form of a cross bar 10 of heavy Wire, having preferably a cover 11 of rubber, or other suitable material, and a strap 12, preferably elastic and made of rubber, which, at its ends is secured to eyes 13 at the respective ends of the bar 10; and a rubber or overshoe clamp 14: fastened to the strap 12 at midlength. The clamp 14: may be of various constructions, but an excellent one is that shown, which has an" inverted U-shaped body adapted. to straddle" the upper edge of the rubber or overshoe and having a spring clamping jaw 16 which is moved in the clamping posltion by a lever 17 The clamp has a shank 18 that is provided intermediate its ends with an offset or shoulder 19, which extends outward from the strap 12 so that when the device is applied to a shoe by placing the rod 10 against the front of the heel and up against the sole and carrying the strap obliquely up- Ward and rearward the shoulder will overhang and be held firmly against the upper edge of the heel stiffener, so that thereby the weight or load in supporting the overshoe or rubber is thrown on the heel stiffener and thus at the same time an amply strong support will be provided even though the parts of my device may in themselves be somewhat delicate, and it will be assured that the device is securely retained in position.

It will be evident with my device the work of application thereof to the shoe and its removal, as well as the operation of clamping and unclamping the overshoe or rubber may be very readily and comfortably performed.

On the inner face of the band 18, on each side of the clamp, I attach a strip 20, of metal or cloth, with a rough surface to increase the hold or cling to the band on the leather shoe; or for the same purpose the surface of the rubber may be roughened as at 21.

A continuous band may be employed in place of the band 12 and bar 10 when a cheaper construction'than the one employing the bar is desired.

Having thus described my invention what I claim is- 1. A retainer for overshoes, comprising a clamp adapted to grip the upper edge of an overshoe at the heel, said clamp having a shoulder adapted to engage the inner shoe above the upper edge of theheel stifi'ener, and means for attaching said clamp to the inner shoeQ 2L Aretainer for overshoes, comprising a clamp adapted to grip the upper edge of an overshoe at the heel, said clamp having a shoulder adapted to engage the inner shoe above the upper edge of the heel stifiener,

and means for attaching said clamp to the inner shoe, comprising a. strip, and a heelengaging cross bar to which the strip is attached.

3. A retainer for overshoes, comprising a shoe-engaging strap, and an overshoe engaging clamp havingra shank attached to said strap, said shank having an outwardly extending shoulder to engage the inner shoe above the upper edge of the heel stiffener.
