ACTUATING MECHANISM FOR FARE-REGISTERS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. OI-IMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Actuating Mechanism for F are-Registers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a register combined with turnstiles, and to a register combined with turnstiles in a street car, and is an improvement on my reissued Patent No. 11,867, of October 30, 1900, for operative means for fare registers, and my pending application for a turnstile filed June 18, 1910, Serial No. 567,539. The former patent refers particularly to hand operative means for setting and registering fares on street cars, and the application referred to relates particularly to hand setting means and turnstile operative means for registering fares.
The present invention combines two turntables for the purpose of operating a register, and it also combines with a register two turntables for operating the same, and means combined with the register for operating the same by hand, and whereby the register can be operated by either of the turnstiles independent of the other turnstile, or by hand operative means independ ent of either of the turnstile operations. In my pending application, one turnstile only is combined with the register. As many railroads are operating on the switch-back principle, or in other words, operate their cars in opposite directions, it is necessary to provide means on either end of the platform for the purpose of enabling the registration of fares by passengers entering the car at either end thereof. This requirement, in many cases, necessitates the application of two turnstiles for the purposes named, and in order to keep a single record showing the work of each conductor operating the car, it is necessary to employ one register only in the car, but combined with two turnstile operative means. It is likewise necessary and essential that each turnstile and the hand oper- Specification of Letters Patent.

ative means should be permanently connected to the register so as to insure the registration of a fare when either one of the turnstiles or hand operative means are moved. To meet these requirements the invention provides simple means for permanently connecting to the register the two turnstiles, and also permanently connecting to the register hand operative means whereby the register may be operated independently through the agency or either one of the turnstiles of the hand operative means. And while the invention provides in combination three separate independently operative means for actuating the register, it must be understood that the combination of the three means is not essential or may not always be desirable. In many cases the two turnstiles combined with the register are required, in which case the hand operative means will be eliminated, and in other cases one turnstile only in combination with the hand Operative means may be required, in which case the other turnstile and its con nections will be eliminated.

Throughout the specification and draw ings, similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents a car provided with a front platform 2 and a rear platform 3. The right hand side of the car, as seen from the drawings, is provided with an ingress door 41:, leading to the rear platform 3, and a door 5 leading from the front platform 2. The left hand side of the car is provided with a door, 6, similar to the door 5, and leading from the platform 3; and with a door 7, similar to the door 1, leading to the platform 2. A. car thus constructed is adapted to operate on the switch-back principle, that is, either end of the car may become the front end. ll hen thus operating, the outer or right hand doors 1 and 5 are used for the ingress and egress of the passengers, and are shown open in Fig. 1; but when the car is moving in the opposite direction, the doors 1 and 5 will be closed, and the doors 6 and 7 will be opened for the passengers. The platform 3 is provided with a door 8, and the platform 2 with a door 9, both of which lead to the interior of the car.
The car 1 is provided with a register 10, adapted to register a multiplicity of fares, of the type shown in my reissued Patent No. 11,867, of October 30, 1900. This register is suitably inounted at one end of the car and is provided with an actuating and set-- ting device, shown in Fig. 3, and constructed as follows: 11 represents a casing provided with a horizontal guide 12 on which a carriage 13 is adapted to reciprocate. llfounted in the carriage 13 is a vertically movable actuator provided with an extension 15 projecting through a longitudinal horizontal opening in a vertically moving gate 16. The gate 16 is mounted on guides 17, and the extension 15 is adapted to engage any one of a plurality of counter actuators when the carriage 13 set by moving the same l0ngitudinally. The gate 16 is moved vertically. The counter actuators above referred to, are not shown in. the present a iplication, but are identical with those shown and described in. my prior reissue patent above referred to. The carriage 13 is set as follows. The said carriage may be operatively connected to setting shafts 1S and 19 by a sprocket chain 20 which passes around sprocket wheels 21 on said rods. The shafts 1S and 19 are mounted on each side of the register 10 and extend to the platform. The shaft 19 extends to the platform 3, where it is connected, by means of miter gears A, to a. vertical shaft mounted in a tubular member 23. The shaft 18 extends through the car to the platform. where it is connected by miter gears to a vertical shaft, similar to the shaft 22, which is mounted in a vertical "tubular member 21. The tubular members 23 and 9-1 are mounted in close proximity to the conductors station and the shafts 2 are provided with handles 25 cooperating with indicators 26 to shift the carriage 13 and to select the desired fare. To register the fare selected by the conductor, the gate 16 is moved vertically by the passenger when passing through the turnstiles, one of which is mounted on each platform 2 and This mechanism is constructed as follows. Each turnstile consists of a standard Ill"), mounted on the floor of the platform, and provided on their upper ends with rotating members 75 to which actuating shafts 31 are attached. The rotating members T5 are provided with a suitable number of pivotal arms 38, adapted to be engaged by the passenger and to partially rotate the shafts ill. Mounted below the pivotal ends of the arms 38 are dials 3(5 and 36- provided with notches 36" which, when they are placed in alincment, allow the pivotal arms to be depressed. hen the arms 58 rest in the notches 3G, the turnstile will be locked against rotation. The pinions 1-2 are mounted on short shafts 13 journaled in the housings l1). and said shafts are provided with. cranks l l; to which operating cards or rods 15 and l t) are attached. The card or rod l3 extends from the turnstile on. the front platform 3 through the interior of the car. and is conma-tcd to one arm of a bell crank lever 17, which is in turn connected by its other arm to the bell crank lever 30 by a connecting rod or cord 18. The cord or rod 10 extends from the tnrnstile on. the platform 3 into the interior of the car where it is attached to one arm of a bell crank lever 19, the other arm of which is connected to the bell crank lever 2%) by a connecting rod or cord 50. ll hen the connecting members 15, 16, 18 and are llexible, said members will prevent one. turnstile actuating the other, if for any reason one of the bell crank levers 29 and 30 should actuate the other. It will therefore be seen. that the connections between the turnstiles and the register, which is common to both, are independent, and the actuation of one is unaffected by the actuation of the other. Consequently when the platform 2 is the front platform, the turnstile thereon will be unaffected by the operation of the turnstile on the rear platform 3, and vice versa.
The turnstiles are placed on opposite sides of the platform in proximity to the doors 8 and 9, thereby providing on the platforms large areas for the congregating of the ingress passengers. To direct the ingress passengers, and for the purpose of providing a guide-way toward the doors 8 and 9, horizontal bars 51 are provided. Said bars are mounted concentric with the turnstile, and are instrumental in compelling the passengers'to give the turnstile a one fourth revolution when they engage one of the arms 38 thereof. As shown in the drawings, the turnstiles are so placed on the platforms that they provide stations 51 for the conductor, but it will be understood that my invention is not limited to this arrangement, as the conductors stations may be located in other parts of the car. \Vhen the car is in operation, the turnstile on the forward platform may be collapsed by lowering some of the arms 38 on their pivots, which provides sufficient room for the motorman and the egress passengers. IVhen said arms are depressed, their respective turnstile is locked against rotation, as is fully described in the copending application above referred to.
For the convenience of the passengers and conductors, a table 52 is mounted above each turnstile, which may be provided with folding leaves adapted to be depressed or collapsed simultaneously with the arms 38. This table acts as a convenient receptacle for the conductors punch and transfer pads, etc, as well as for articles carried by the passengers when they are securing their fares from their person to be handed to the conductor. In Figs. 7 and 8, I have shown a modified form of turnstile in which the tables 52 are unobstructed by the tubular members 39. In this construction, the rotat ing member 36 is provided with a shaft 53 which extends down through the standard 35 into a housing 54: where it is provided with a miter gear 55. The gear 55 is in mesh with a similar gear 56 on one end of a horizontal shaft 59, the other end of which is geared to the actuating shaft 37, through gears 57, mounted in a housing 58. The shaft 59 is of sufficient length to allow the actuating shaft 37 and its tubular mem ber 39 to clear the table 52.
In the devices above described, the connecting mechanism between the register and the turnstile is above head, but in Figs. 4-, 5 and 6 I have shown a construction in which said mechanism is located beneath the floor of the platform and car and out of sight. In this construction the rotating members 36 are attached to vertical shafts 60 which extend downwardly within the standards 35, and provided with pivot bearings 61 on their lower ends within housings 62 beneath the floor of the platform. The shafts 60 are geared to horizontal shafts 63 through bevel gears 64 having a four to one ratio similar' to the gears 4-1 and 42. The shafts (33 are suitably journaled to extend beneath the floor of the car. As the register 10 is located at one end of the car, one of the shafts 63 must extend the entire length thereof. To prevent said elongated shaft being affected by expansion and contraction due to various climatic conditions, the said shaft is provided with an expansion coupling which may be constructed as is shown in Fig. 6, in which one section of the shaft is provided with a square male portion 65 received by a female portion 66 on the other section of the shaft. The ends of the shafts (33 opposite the turnstiles, are provided with cranks 67 similar to the cranks 441, and which are connected to the bell-crank levers 47 and L9 by ver tical cords or rods 68 similar to the cords or rods 45 and 46.
The setting rods 18 and 19 are provided with handles 69 accessible from the platforms and from the interior of the car, and by means of which the fare may be selected for registration independent of the setting levers In connection with these handles, auxiliary indicators 70 are provided which are visible from the platforms and from the interior of the car. This setting means is used when it is not desirable or possible to use the turnstiles; and for actuating the register, cords 71 are provided. The said cords extend from accessible points of the car and over pulleys 7 2 mounted on the car 1 and the casing 11. The lower ends of the cords are attached at 73 to the gate 16, which allows said gate to be actuated independent of the turnstiles.
I claim:
1. In a device of the type specified, the combination with a car provided with front and rear platforms, and provided with a register, of front and rear turnstiles mounted on the front and rear platforms of said car, and common to said register, independently movable connections between each turnstile and said register, and means for locking either of said turnstiles.
2. In a device of the type specified, the combination with a car provided with front and rear platforms, and a register, of setting mechanism for said register, front and rear actuators common to said register mounted on said platforms, independently movable connecting means between each ac tuator and said register, and means for locking either of said actuators.
3. In a device of the type specified, a car provided with front and rear platforms, a register mounted on said car, setting means for said register, front and rear turnstiles mounted on said platforms, independently movable connecting means between each of said turnstiles and said register, and means for locking either of said turnstiles.
1-. In a device of the type specified, the combination with a register located in a street car, of a plurality of turnstiles adapted to actuate said register as passengers enter the car, means for locking one or the other of said turnstiles, independently movable connections between each turnstile and said register, and auxiliary manually-operative actuating means for said register.
5. In a device of the type specified, a fare register, setting means for selecting fares to be registered, a turnstile adapted to actuate said register when a fare is selected, con necting means between said turnstile and said register, and auxiliary manually-operative actuating means for said register.
6. In a device of the type specified, a register, means for setting the same, a plurality of turnstiles adapted to actuate said register, connecting means between each turnstile and said register, and auxiliary manually-operative actuating means for said register.
7. In a device of the type specified, a fare register, setting means for selecting fares to be registered, a plurality of turnstiles adapted to actuate said register, independently movable connecting means between each turnstile and said register, and auxiliary inanually-operative actuating means for said register.
8. In a device of the type specified, a car provided with front and rear platforms, a register, and setting means for said register, of front and rear turnstiles mounted on said platforms, and adapted to actuate said register, independently movable connecting means between each turnstile and said register, and auxiliary manually-operative actuating means for said register.
9. In a device of the type specified, a register setting mechanism for said register, a plurality of turnstiles adapted to actuate said register, means for locking said turnstiles, connecting means between each turnstile and register, and auxiliary manuallyoperative means for said register.
10. In a device of the type specified, a register, setting means for said register, a plurality of turnstiles adapted to actuate said register, means for locking said turnstiles, independently movable connecting means between each turnstile and said register, and auxiliary manually-operative means for said register.
11. In a device of the type specified, a. car provided with front and rear platforms, a register mounted on said car, and setting means for said register, of front. and rear turnstiles mounted. on said platform, means for locking said turnstiles, independently movable connecting means between each of said turnstiles and said register, and auxiliary manually-operative means for said. register.
12. In a device of the type specified, the combination with a register, setting means for said register, and indicating means for said setting means, of a plurality of turn stiles common to said register, independently movable connecting means between each of said turnstiles and said register. means for locking said register, and auxiliary inanually-operated actuating means for said register.
13. In a device of the type specified, the combination with a register, setting means for said register, and indicators for said setting means, of turnstiles adapted to actuate said register, flexible connections between said turnstiles and said register, by which the register is operated, means for docking said turnstiles, and auxiliary manuallyoperative actuating means for said register.
