Be it known that I, AUGUST KLIMENT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Noria, in the county of Dona Ana and State of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements.v in Sleds, of which the following is a specifica` tion, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to sleds, and theV primary object of my invention is to furnish a sled with a novel steering device that can be easily and quickly operated to safely guide a sled in a desired direction.

Another object of this invention is to furnish a sled with a steering device that eliminates the ordinary practice of juveniles in using the toe and heel of the shoe for guiding a sled, not only saving shoe leather, but preventing injuring that often occurs to a foot when encountering a stone or struc# ture.

A further object of this Vinvention is to provide a sled with a steering device embodying spring supported metallic shoes that can be easily and quickly lowered to guide a sled in a desired direction.

A still further object of this invention is to accomplish the above results by a Inechanical construction that is durable, ineX- pensive to manufacture, easy to install, and highly efficient for the purposes for which they are intended.

With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specically described and then claimed.

Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure l is a side elevation of a sled in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a plan of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a detached guide shoe.

Further describing my invention in detail with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein like numerals denote corresponding parts throughout 1 denotes parallel runners connected by, transverse braces 2 and a board 3.

13 denotes at compression springs carried by the outer ends of the bar 4 or the screw bolts 5 thereof, said springs extending under the foot rests 4and supporting the same normally elevated.

14 denotes angularly disposed casings secured to the outer sides of the runners l and arranged within said casings are spring supported brake rods 15 having handles 16. The brake rods 15 can be lowered to retard the movement of the sled and eventually stop the same.

It is thought that the operation and utility of the steering device will be apparent without further description and while in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim.

What I claim is The combination with a sled provided with a transverse bar at the forward end thereof, of rearwardly extending and normally inclined foot rests having their forward ends pivotally connected to the ends of said bar and having their rear ends provided with heel sockets, said foot rests further provided intermediate their ends with oppositely disposed laterally disposed sole braces, inverted U-sliaped members secured to and depending from the rear end of said 5 foot rests and disposed at an angle relatively to the foot rests7 and means secured to the ends of said bar and projecting rear- Wardly therefrom and engaging said foot AUGUST KLIMENT.
