Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 28, 1913'.
Application filed. June 4, 1910. Serial No. 564,997.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWAR M. BARBER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Stonington, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in. Slip- Sheet- Feeding Devices for Printing- Presses, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide mechanism for feeding slip sheets into position to be combined with the printed sheets as they are delivered.
This invention is shown in connection with a multicolor printing press provided with a reciprocating delivery, but it is obvious that the invention could be applied in connection with rintin resses of other "types and in connection with sheet delivcries of various types.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a part diagrammatic and part longitudinal central section through so much of a multicolor printing press as will give a clear understanding of the location, construction and operation of the invention.
. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail section, showing the operative connections between the several parts at one side of the machine. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view, showing the operative connections between the several parts at the other sideof the machine. Fig. 35
4 is a detail side view of the cam which controls the mechanisms for opening and closing the grippers on the main sheet feed cylinder and for opening and closing the grippers on the slip sheet feed cylinder, and Fig. 5 is a similar view of the mechanisms for opening and closing the grippers on the slip sheet feed cylinder.
The main frame is denoted by 1, in whichframe are mounted the shafts 2, 3, 4, 5, of the plate cylinders 6, 7, 8, 9, and the shaft 10 of the impression cylinder 11. The impression cylinder 11 is provided with a set of grippers '12' arranged to be opened at the proper time in the usual manner, by the stationary cam 13,- for receiving the sheets from the grippers 14 on the main sheet feed cylinder 15. This cam 13 also opens the 7 grippers 12 at the pro-per time to deliver the main sheets from the impression cylinder 11, after they have been printed, to the grippers 16 on the transfer roll 17.
Suitable inking -mechanisms 18, 19, 20, 21, are provided for supplying ink to the plate cylinders 6, 7, 8, 9.
A second transfer roll 22 is provided with a set of grippers 23 arranged to be opened at the proper times to receive first a sheet from the set of grippers 24 on the slip sheet feed cylinder 25; second, to receive a printed sheet from the grippers 16 of the first transfer cylinder, and third, to permit the two superposed sheets to be fed to a sheet delivery device, that shown herein being a reciprocating flat sheet delivery device 26, of well known and approved form. The upper and lower guides for this reciprocating flat sheet delivery device-are denoted by 27, 28, theinner ends of which guides areqlocated in close proximity to the second transfer roll 22.
The main sheet feed table is denoted by 29 and the slip sheet feed table is denoted by 30. A sheet stop 31 is provided for the table 29 and a sheet stop 32 is provided for the table 30. 7
A stud shaft 33 is mounted in the end frame 1, which stud shaft may be driven at the desired speed from any suitable source of power, not shown herein. The impres= sion cylinder 11 is provided with a spur gear 34 fixed thereon and aloose spur gear 34*, which loose gear is driven by a spur gear 35 fixed to the shaft 33. The
main sheet feed transfer cylinder 15 is driven from the impression cylinder 11,
through the spur gears 34*, 36. The first transfer reel 17 is driven fro-m the impres-.
sion cylinder 11, through the gears 34, 37. The second transfer reel 22 is driven from the shaft 33 through the spur gears 35, 38. The slip sheet feed cylinder 25 is driven from the second transfer reel 22, through the spur gears 39, 40. The sheet forwarding roll 41 is driven from the second trans sheet feed roll 50, which co-acts with the cyiinder 25, is driven from the cylinder 25, through the spur gears 10, 51.
A fixed cam is arranged to open the grippers '16 on the first transfer reel 17, for receiving the printed sheets from the set of grippers 12 on the impression cylinder 11, said ram being also arranged to open the grippers 16 for transferring the sheets from the first Pansfer reel 1'? to the grippers 23 of the second transfer reel A fixed cam 53 is ar *anged to open the grippers 23 on the second transfer reel 22, first for receiving a slip sheet from the grippers 24 on the cylinder 25, and second for receiving a printed sheet from the grippers 16 on the first transfer reel 17. A fixed cam is arranged in position to open the grippers 23 for permitting the superposed printed sheet and slip sheet to be fed o the sheet delivery device 26.
The mechanisms for controlling the opening and closing of the grippers 14 on the main sheet feed cylinder 15 and the grippers 24L on the slip sheet feed cylinder 25 are controlled from a cam 55 on the impression cylinder shaft 10, which mechanisms are con strncted, arranged and operated as follows: The shafts of the grippers 1 1-, 24:, are re spectively provided with tumblers 5G, 57, to which are applied springs 58, 59. These tumblers 55, 57, are operated upon at the proper times by being carried by the revolution of their cylinders 15 and 25, over pins 60, 61, and 62, 68, respectively attached to the opposite ends of levers 6 1, (35, which work on fulcrum pins 66, 67. These pins 60, (S1 and 62, 63, are movable by said levers 6 1-, 65, into and out of the path of the tumblers 56, 57, respectively. The lever (34 is rocked at the proper times by a lever 68 mounted on the fulcrum pin 69, one arm of which lever is engaged with the cam The lever 65 is sin'iilarly rocked at the proper times by a lever 70 mounted in suit able bearings 71, 72, one arm of which lever is engaged with the said cam The parts are so timed with respect to each otl'ierthatthe grippers let on the cylinder 15 and the grippers 24 on the cylinder 25, will be opened to receive their respective main sheets and slip sheets every two revolutions of these cylinders, which is every revolution of the impression cylinder 11. The parts are also so timed that the grippers 14: will be opened to deliver the main sheets to the grippers 12 on the impression cylinder 11, every two r volutions of the cylinder 15. The grippers 2 1 will also be opened ever; two revolutions of the cylinder 25 for delivering the slip sheets to the grippers 23 on the second transfer reel 22'.
A cam 73 on the shaft 18 controls the operation of the stops 31, 32, as follows: A spring-pressed rocking lever 7% is pivoted at 75, which lever is provided with a stud or roller 76, engaging the cam 73. A red 7 7 connects the lever 7 1 with an arm 78 fixed to the shaft 79 of the stop 31. Another lever 80 is pivoted at 81 and is provided with a stud or roller 82 engaging the cam 73. A rod 83 connects this lever 80 with an arm 84 fixed to the shaft 85 of the stop 82. These parts are so timed that the stops 31 and will be swung up into position and hold the main sheets and the slip sheets in position until their advance edges are tobe engaged by the grippers 1a and 2 1 re pectively.
A sheet guide 86 is mounted on a cross-bar 87, which sheet guide is located in position to guide the printed sheets around the first transfer reel 17. Another sheet guide 88 is mounted on a cross-bar 89 in position to direct the slip sheets from the cylinder 25 to the second transfer reel 22.
It is to be understood where the terms cylinder or reel are used, that I intend to cover any operative device for carrying the sheets through the prescribed paths. It is also evident that various changes might be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
In operation, the sheets to be printed are fed from the table 29 to the cylinder 15 and are fed therefrom to the impression cylinder 11. After the sheet has been printed, it is delivered from the impression cylinder 11 to the first transfer reel 17. In the meantime a slip sheet has been fed to the cylinder 25 and this cylinder 25 will feed the slip sheet to the second transfer reel 22 just before the printed sheet is fed thereto from the first transfer reel 17. This second transfer reel will then transfer the slip sheet together with the printed sheet on top of the same to the sheet delivery device in position to be delivered to any predetermined point.
An automatic means is thus provided for feeding slip sheets into position to be associated with the printed sheets as they are delivered from the printing mechanism.
