CENTERING-TOOL To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, "WILLIAM F. Hannoou, a citizen of the United Stat-es, residing at Shreveport, in the parish of Caddo and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Centering-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to tools, and more particularly to a centering device adapted for use in marking the center of rod-like elements such as bolts, shafts, rods.
An object of my invention is to provide such a device as the above which shall be simple and cheap to manufacture, which shall have few and simple parts but which at the same time shall be strong and durable and above all eliicient in operation.
Another object of my invention is to provide such a device as the above which will readily and quickly find the center of any object round in cross section, and which will then mark the center by a single blow of a hammer or other similar tool.
A still further object of my invention is to provide such a device as the above, the parts of which may be readily and quickly taken apart and replaced if broken.
With the foregoing and other objects in view my invention consists in such details of construction and arrangement and com-r bination of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, ref erence will be had to the accompanying drawings, in which like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which- Figure l is a view in elevation of my improved tool showing a part of the head in section in order to illustrate more clearly the construction thereof. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken upon the line 22 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 3 is a similar view taken on the line 33 looking in the direction of the arrow.
In carrying my invention into practice I construct a punch 1, having a pointed end 2 and a reduced upper end 3. Said reduced upper end 3 is externally screw threaded as at 4 on which an internally threaded hollow head 5 is turned. It will be noted that the head 5 is hollow, only a part of its length, the upper end being solid for a considerable distance. It is also pointed out that the shank or reduced end 3 has its upper end in Specification of Letters Patent.

abutting contact with the solid end of the head 5 in order that a blow upon the head 5 may be transmitted direct to the reduced end 3 rather than through the screw threaded engagement thereof. This construction is to prevent the threads from becoming stripped from the strain of blows upon the head 5.
It will be seen that I have provided caliper mechanism for slidably guiding a punch and holding an elongated element and the punch in co-axial relation so that when the punch is struck by a blow it will accurately mark the center of said element.
Slidably mounted upon the shank 3 be tween the larger portions of the punch 1 and the shoulder formed by the head 5 is a block 6 having a perforation 7 extending vertically therethrough. Said block 6 is provided with laterally extending arms 8 which are bifurcated as at 9, so as to be adapted to receive caliper arms 10. These arms may be connected to the arms 8 in any desired manner the fastening means shown in the drawings being the screws 11, which permit the arms to be readily removed when it is desired to pack the instrument in a small place or to insert other arms.
The caliper arms 10 gradually taper toward the lower ends 12 in order that the greater weight may come high in the instrument so as to be above the end of the device being centered, for it has been found that this construction gives the best results. However the ends 12 of the caliper arms have connected to them approximately se1nicircular jaws 13, which are of considerable length so as to extend quite a distance around the bolt or shaft being centered and at the same time are of comparatively great width so as to extend along the length of said bolt quite a distance in order that said tool may quickly be adjusted and find the center as shown in Fig. 1. It will be understood that the punch 1 will be held in the geometrical center of the bolt or shaft in a perfectly perpendicular position as soon as the jaws 13 are fitted to the bolt or shaft snugly and in contact therewith throughout its entire surface. This result is easily obtained when said jaws are made comparatively long and wide as shown. The device being centered is shown at 1 1- in the drawmgs in the form of a bolt, but my invention may be used in connection with any other object round or approximately round in cross section. It will be seen that a blow upon the head 5 will drive the punch 2 into the bolt and make an exact center thereof. It will also be noted that my tool may be quickly and easily taken apart for any purpose and that it is extremely simple and would cost little to manufacture. I desire to lay great stress upon this point as well as upon the configuration of the aws 13 and construction of the punch 1 and the head 5.
I desire it to be understood that slight changes in the construction and in the arrangement and combination of the several parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention, provided such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention what- I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A centering tool comprising a block having an aperture therein, arms extending from said block cali 3G1 arms pivotally connected to said arms, jaws carried by said caliper arms, a punch having a reduced end slidably mounted in the aperture in said block, and a head on said reduced end.
2. A centering tool comprising a block having an aperture therein, laterally extending arms connected to said block, caliper arms removably mounted to said laterally extending arms, the lower ends of said caliper arms being comparatively small, arcuated jaws of comparative length and breadth carried by the reduced ends of said caliper arms, a. punch slidably mounted in the apertured block, and a head on said punch.
3. A centering tool comprising an apertured block, laterally extending arms connected to said block, caliper arms carried by said arms, means carried by said caliper arms adapted to embrace a round object, a punch having a reduced shank, said punch being slidably mounted in said apertured block between the shoulder formed by the reduced shank thereof and the outer end of said reduced shank, and a head removably mounted upon said reduced shank whereby said punch may be removed from said block.
4. A centering device comprising in combination, a punch adapted to mark the center of an. elongated element, and caliper mechanism for holding such element and slidably guiding the punch in co-axial relation therewith, substantially as described.
5. A centering device comprising in combination, caliper arms for positioning a rodlike element, a head block pivotally connected with said arms, and a punch slidably guided to the said head block in co-axial relation and adapted when struck to mark the center of said rod-like element, substantially as described.
6. A centering device comprising in combination, a relatively heavy head block, caliper arms pivotally carried thereby and tapering toward their free ends, the ends of said arms having jaws presenting relatively extensive gripping surface adapted to position a rod-like element, and a punch slidably guided on said head block in co-axial relation with and adapted when struck to mark the center of said rod-like element, substantially as described.
