Description

oHnISTIAN- "DANN, .or LA ,oRoSSn WISooNSIN'.
Letters PatentNo. 107,669, dated September 27, 1870,.
IMPROVEMENT iNYJolNTED oAns.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters' PatentV and making pit of the same 4To 'all Iwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN DANN, of La Grosse, in the county of La Grosse and State of Wisconsin, have invented a` new and improved Jointed Oar; and I'do hereby declare that the following is a full,
'.clear, and vexact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same,
. reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of 'this specification, in'whchv Figure 1 represents a perspective view ot' my i1nproved jointed-oar.
Figure 2 isa detail side view of the jointed part. A Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. My invent-ion relates to jointedoars' which are 'operated by a person facing the bow; and -'It has for its object toldisp'ense with metal cogs,
iihich rattle, produce great friction, are heavy, expensive, and constantly acting to pull apartthe joint. For'this purpose I propose to combine, with the ordinary pivoted handle, blade, and swinging plate, a exiblecord, fastened to the rounded and .pivote'd ends of the handle 'and blade.
A B arethe two parts the 'oar,. being the handle and'B t-he blade.
These t-wo parts are, by means of pins wb, respectively pivoted to a plate, C, which, at-its ends, is pivoted into ears projecting 'from the gunwale of the boat. i
flhe contiguous or adjoining pivoted ends of the parts A B are connected with each other by means oi' a string or cord, c. Thus, it will'be perceived that the Aconstant; tendency of tbe joints will -be to come together, instead of being to separate; that the joint` works noiselessly; that the cord is readily'replaced in ease of accident or wear, and that the cost is but a small fraction of that of the cogged metal pinions. Having thus described my invention, i I claim as new and desire tosecnre byIJetters Patent- The combination, vwith a pivoted handle, blad, and plate, A B Q, of ,the flexible cord c, fastened to the rounded ends 4of the handle and blade, as and for the purpose' described. l
, CHRISTIAN DANN.
