or thelike, of which the following is a specii ficat-ion.
The present invention relates to" a stirring or" agitating device for" roasting furnaces, heating furnaces and the like, of the kind in which the agitating arms in each; tier consist of a uniform hollow body and are arranged ands upported'ina recess pro-' vided in the vertical shaft of the device.-
These' hollow agitating arms" are in; com
munication with the hollow shaft which is" traversed by a cooling medium so that the latter is capable of entering the agitating arms. In this known agitating device a relatively large portion of the cooling medium flows past the agitating arms and that portion which enters the agitating arms passes from the end of the latter into the roasting chambers and thereby disturbs the roasting operation.
Now the present invention has for its object to obviate the drawback above mentioned, and at the same time to efiect a greatly increased cooling of th agitating arms.
To this end the invention consists in the provision within the hollow agitating arms and near each end thereof of continuous cooling passages produced by an inner partition. Each cooling passage has its inlet end connected with a central opening through which the cooling medium is supplied and its outlet end communicates with lateral spaces in the hollow shaft through which the cooling medium is discharged. The bottom face of the recess in the hollow shaft and the corresponding bearing face of the hollow agitating arm are each provided with a central opening through which the cooling medium is caused to enter and with suitable lateral openings through which the cooling medium after having traversed the continuous passages within the agitating arm, is allowed to escape and to pass to the special discharge spaces provided in the hollow shaft.
A preferable form of the device is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 illustrates an axial central section of a portion of the hollow shaft and Specifitation of Letters Patent. aiiiiiieationfiia'aime 11';

iaizasesame-asset :oii'e of, the stirring or agitating arms arranged therein. FiglQ is a cross section of Fig". 1; and Fig. 3 isIa vertical section on a somewhat larger scale t'o'show the opening in the hollow shaft and the arrangement of ,the hollow agitating a'rm'therein;
As shown, thetwo agitating armsl are made in onepie'ce'in the form of a hollow bodya, which" issupported in a recess 6 provided in the" hellow shaft 0. The lateral wa"llsof the recess or openings 6 are pro- 'vided with'oppositely directed beveled faces id; 2 )'a' nfd ,withlugsc (Fig. 3) adapted to engage with corresponding beveled portions f on the agitating arms. By inserting the agitating 1n the recess 5 until the projections g thereon are brought to bear against the hollow shaft and then turning the agitating arm horizontally against the lugs c, the agitating arm is caused, by the beveled faces on these lugs, to be firmly pressed in downward direction, so that its lower face it is brought into intimate contact and engagement with the supporting face 2' in the hollow shaft. In rotating the hollow shaft the agitating arm, owing to the counterpressure produced by the roasting material, is firmly pressed against the 0blique faces on the lugs e and is therefore safely tightened in its position.
According to the present invention the hollow agitating arm a is provided in its interior with a partition 70 extending toward the outer ends of the arms, but terminating short of these ends. By this partition the interior of each arm is divided into two compartments or passages Z, m, which, however, communicate with one another. The passages Z meet in the center of the agitating arms and at this point form a central opening '12, which registers with a central opening 0 in the hollow shaft. Each passage m terminates in the central portion of the agitating arms in an opening 0 communicating with a lateral opening 9 in the hollow shaft. The cooling medium, such as for instance, cold air, on leaving the central passage 1" in the hollow shaft in the direction of the arrow shown, passes into the agitating arm and after traversing the passages Z and m therein leaves the arm through the lateral openings p, g and escapes through the lateral passages s of the hollow shaft. These lateral passages s, which are separated from the central passage 1' of the hollow shaft by partitions t,
are connected with the exhaust or with the free air, as will be readily understood. The whole of the cooling medium, therefore, prior to its discharge is forced to flow through the agitating arms and no part of the cooling medium can flow past the agitating arms so that the whole quantity of the cooling agent is utilized for the cooling of the agitating device. If desired, however, and as shown in Fig. 2, one portion of the cooling medium flowing upwardly through the central space 9" in the hollow shaft may be deviated to flow past the agitating arms through passages u to the agitating arms in the next higher tier.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said. invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is In an agitating device for roasting furnaces or the like, in combination, a shaft havin an inner and an outer conduit ex- -i tending therethrough, an agitatlng arm consisting of a single hollow body, havin its lower side a central opening and two lateral openings, said body being divided by a partition into upper and lower passages in communication with one another at the ends of the agitating arm, the upper passage being in communication with the inner conduit of said shaft by means of the central opening thereby providing an inlet for the cooling medium and the lower passage being in communication with the outer conduit of said shaft by means of the two lateral openings thereby providing an outlet for the cooling medium, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MAURICE VAN MARCKE DE LUMMEN.
