Be it lmovsn that l, ROBERT 'if'. Ramses. a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Knoxville, in the county of Alleglienj/f' and Siete of Pennsylvania, have inventrl certain new and' useful Improve ments in Thermos atie Valves, o which the following is a specification.
Une object oi this invention is to provide improved means for transmitting the movement of the thermostatic device to eli'- eet the opening and closing of the volvo, with improved means for adjusting the valve movements to different predetermined temperatures.
A further object is to provide for quickly or suddenly seating and unseating the volvo when the requisite temperature has been attained, the operation distinguishing in this regard from those operations heretoV fore proposed which characterized by sluggish inovcx'nents accompanied by unvertainty as to when and to what extent the valve will open and Without certainty us to its complete closing.
Another object is to provide improved means, accessible at the exterior oi' the valve, for adjusting the mechanism which transmits themoveinent of the thermostat-ic device to the valve. l
In the. accompanying drawings, Figure l is au elevation of a valve device constructed in accordance with the invention, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on line 2 2 ot l. Figi: 3 is a sectional elevation ou line 3 v3 ot Fig. "11. Fig. i is a cross scc tion ou line Il-l of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section on line 5-5 of 4. 6 and 7 are details of the adjustable lever carrier,
Referring to the drawings, 2 designates the valve body provided with gas inlet 3 and outlet Ll. l/Vithin the body is scat for check 'valve G which is held normally7 seated by spring; '7, also by pressure of gas admitted at il. the spring and valve being confined by cap 8.
The side of the Valve body oppositccep S is formed with the tubular or hollow tension S) having threaded extremity l0 adapted to be secured in the Wall of e stenti boiler or other Water container7 not shown. Projecting' Afrom extension 9 into such boiler is the tliermostatic tube il formed preferably oit copper. "Wi
o .thin tbe tube and secured to the outer end of 'the latter is rod l2 formed of steel or other material l'iaving` a different coeiiicientof expansion from the tube7 the inner end of the rod extending into the valve body and adapted to oper-ate the. volvo iu manner presently to be explained.'
Located within body 2 is carrier i3 having tubular extension. lil Which is movable in and guided by body extension 9. Ful-- crumod in earrier 13 are the cooperating levers 15 and 16, hereinafter referred to as the first and 4 second levers7 respectin/'ely5 lever 3.5 being disposed transversely oi the thermostetic rod l2 with the inner extremity of: the letter engaging said lever near its uloruin l5. liever 16 is disposed reversely Yto and preferably substantially parel1 l with lever l5, and is :formed l" en edge-like projection l? neer Aits e ui i6" which engegeo by the free portion of lever 'l ie free portion lof lever 16 ex tends r of valve 6 and is udaiited to engag Carrier IB iorined with tb #fui-.led socket lS andudjustable therein is the threaded inner extremity 1'9 of stem 2O7 'the letter rotatably confined in. a Wall of body 2 by gland 2l. Stom extremity 2G is adapted to receive a wrench or other turning; device. Secured to stem 2O et the exterior of the valve body is pointer arm 22 Which curved to place its extremity over e temperature scale 23 that muy be conveniently located on the exterior of body 2.
The adjustment is preferably such. that normally, i. c., when the Water in the boiler is boing' maintained :it desired temperature. there is 'slight clearance or slack between lever 'itl and valve stem 6", as in Fie. 2. The contraction of tube l1 resulting from lowering tl e temperature of the Water, as when hot water is drawn oli' and replaced by coll Water in the boiler. forces rod 12 outwardly and moves the cooperating levers in direction to unseat the vai ve anc vpermit gas to pass therethrough to the burner.
lt is characteristic of the invention that the valve openingmovement and the pressure of rod 12 must overcome slight clastieity inherent in the levers, and must overcome thel inertie` of the valve plus the gas pressure and spring pressure behind thel valve ioi'ore the latter will open. But when these opposing conditions ore overcomethe valve rpens suddenly and positively, its
' movement doubtless being,` accelerated by the appreciable recoil or rebound of the levers. Substantially a like ,performance ensues When the valve closes, the closing movement beingopposed until the opposing pressure suddenly` yieldsand the valve closes with a snap. ln the opening and closingl movements-edge 1 7 of lever 1G slides on lever l5, as will be understood. lt is further characteristic of the invention that the operating parts are contained Within the valve and fully vsensitive to every tendency to move. ln this respect the mechanism is superior to those of prior design wherein one or more parts extend to the exterior ot the valve with the friction of stulling botes, etc.,-tending to 4obstruct their movement and hence decreasing their sensitiveness.
T he lever carrier 1S is moved toward and from the valvel by stem 22, and With the parts properly proportioned and adjusted it is necessary to turn the stem very slightly to vary the temperature at 'which the valve will open, and this may be determined with accuracy by adjusting` stem 22 to the graduations Q3. To cause the valve to open at a higher temperature, stem Q0 is turned to the right, thereby moving carrier 113 toward rod 1Q, thus swinging lever 15 toward the valve, and similarly moving lever l", with the result that the rod and valve are more closely of" directly connected, and correspondingly decreasing' the contraction of the thermostat and the movement ot the levers necessary to open the valve. A reverse movement of stem 2O adjusts lthe carrier toward the valve, thereby increasing theA necessary throuY ot the valve operating mechanism, and necessitating greater cooling of the thermostat. with corresponding decrease in ten'iperature of the water before tlmx valve is operated. From 'the foregoing it will be` seen that the movement ol carrier 1? in either direction is so compounded by the levers that only very slight movement of the carrier is required to materially atl'ect the operatimi of the valve.
