Description

adapted to be applied to a cast metal case 14. This case is also adapted yto be fixed on the surface of a door and is provided with anges 15 t-hrough which screws may be in serted to hold it in place.v The case 14- is rectangular in form, being hollow and left open at its inner side anda hole is drilled through the front vertical side thereof and a corresponding recess is drilled into the inner surface of the rear vertical side of the body to receive the housing 16. In this construction the rear end of the housing is not closed, but is inserted in the recess drilled into the rear side of the case and the spring within the housing seats against the bottom yof this recess. The outer end of the housing in this form is provided with an out-turned flange, which en ages the outer surface of the front side o -the case and the housing is held in the case by an out-turned `portion 17 of the housing which engages theinner surface of the front of the case, this portion 17 is struck'outward after the housing has been inserted in place, land befo-re the bolt has been placed therein. After the housing has been assembled in position, the spring and bolt areinserted and the bolt is retained by striking in a portion of the housing as heretofore described.. A knob 18 is also attached to the case preferably by riveting it thereto.
What I claim is 1. A latch comprising a tubular housing closed -at one end, abolt slidable in said housing, having an Aextended groove, a spring behind the bolt engaging the closed end of the housing and'yieldably thrusting thebolt outward, and a portion of the wall of the housing struck into the said groove to limit the movement of the bolt.
2. A latch comprising a tubular housing closed at one end, a cylindrical bolt slidable therein, and also having an extended annular groove adapted to projectI from the housing, the projecting end thereof being conical or rounded, a spring behind said bolt engaging the closed end of the guide and serving to yieldably thrust the bolt outward, and
' a portion of the ywall of the said housing struck into the said groove in the bolt.
3. A latch comprising a tubular housing closed at one. end, a spring actuated bolt slidable in said housing andlxavin an elongated annular groove, a portion o the Wall of the said housing being struck into the said annular groove to limit the movement of the bolt and an out-turned flange sur.- rounding the open end of the housing.
41. A latch comprising a rectangular hollow case provided with an opening through .its forward side and acorresponding recess .in the inner surface of the opposite side, said recess being in alinement with said opening, a tubular housing inserted through said opening in the body and into the said recess, a
spring actuated plunger slidable in said housing, and a portion of the wall of said housing being struck outward to yengage the inner surface of the forward wall of the case to retain the housing in place.
5. A latch comprising a hollow' rectangular case having a circular opening through its forward wall and a corresponding recess in the inner surface of the opposite wall, a tubular housing open at its rear end and inserted through the said o ening and into the said recess, .a portion of) the said housing being struck outward to engage the inner surface of the forward wall of the'case to ret-ain the housing in position, a bolt slidable in said housing, and a spring behind the bolt engaging the rear end of the same and seating against the bottom ofthe said recess toyieldably thrust the plunger outward.
. 6. A latch comprisin a hollow rectangular case having a circu ar opening-through one of its sides and a corresponding circular recess in theinner Isurface of the opposite side, a tubular housing open at both ends, inserted through the said opening and into said opposite recess, a portion of the wall of said housing being struck outward to engage the inner surface of the forward ing, the edges of said sheet metal being turned outward to form base flanges and the rear of said tubular housing being closed,
-a spring actuated `bolt having a groove therein and slidable in said housing and normally extending outward therefrom, and a portion of the wall of said housing struck inward into the said groove.
8. A latch comprising a case of sheet metal formed in the shape 4of a tubular housing, the edges of said 'j metal being turned outward to form base fianges and the rear end of said vhousing being closed, a cylindrical bolt having an annular groove in its body and slidable-in said vhousing and also adapted to project from lthe forward end thereof, a spring behind the bolt engaging the rear end of the same, an'd seating against the closed end of the housing and yieldably thrusting the bolt outward, and aportion of the wall of the housing struck inward into the annular groove inthe bolt. .9. A latch comprising a caseof sheet metal formed in the shape of a tubular hous Lomme ing, the edges of the sheet metal being turned outward to form base flanges, and the rear end of said housing being closed, e spring actuated bolt having an annuar groove in its body and slidable in the said housing, and also adapted to project from the forward end thereof, a portion of the housing struck inward into the said groove to limit the movement of the bolt, a strip of metal surrounding the said housing turned outward upon said base flanges, and
riveted thereto, said strip of metal being arranged to cover the opening formed by striking inward of the metal therefrom, and a knob attached to the said strip' of metal.
In testimony whereof aiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
