UNITED STATES PATENT orsron.
JOSEPH son'wnnv, or wAnKnGAN, ILLINOIS, nssienonor FORIY-NINE ounnmvnnnnrns 'ro FRANK FLOWER, or WAUKEGAN, ILLINOIS.
' .UNBUTTONING DEVICE.
Application filed October 7, 1912. Serial No. 724,327.
To all whom it mayconce'rn.
Be it known that I, JOSEPH F. Sonwnnr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Waukegan, county of Lake, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Unbuttoning Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in unbuttoning devices and the object of this improvement is to provide a simple, effective device of the character mentioned which will be adapted to unbutton shoes and like articles with a rhinimumaamount of effort and which will not injure the button-hole or button in the process of unbuttoning the same.
Other objects will appear heremafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arran ements of partshereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, Fig. 3 is a part section and part elevation of my device applied to the button connection of a shoe, and Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 44 in Fig, l.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the dra ings, comprises a member 5 made in a uniform thickness and provided with a bifurcated end forming fingers 6 which are curved upwardly substantially as shown. On the other end of the member 5 is provided a handle 7 which is of a size and shape to engage the finger of the operator. The operator preferably uses the second finger on the right hand on this handle. Between the fingers 6 is an opening 6 whichjs of a suitable size to ermit of the free passage of the button to be u bottoned.
Slidably mountedon the mem er 5 is a member 8 which is provided withilaterally extendin arms 9 which are burved a'bout the mem )er 5 to form a connectionwhereby. 2 member 8 ma y be slid longitudinally on the; member 5, as clearly illustrated. On one end of the member 8 is a handle portion 10 curved to fit the finger of an operator. The operator n'efcrahly uses the first finger on the right hand on the curved side of this handle and the thumb of the same hand on the outer end poliion of this handle, thereby permitting of fications' as come within the scope readily moving the member '8 in either direction on the member '5. On the other end of the member 8 is an offset portion 11 and the end portion of the member 11 is bent upwardly forming a plunger end 12, as clearly illustrated. A longitudinal groove 13 is formed in the button engaging surface of the curved end 12 to provide a better engaging surface for engaging the button to be unbuttohed- In operation the curved fin ers 6 are inserted under the button-hole ap 1 1 of the shoe, or other article which it is desired to unbutton, between such button-hole fiap and the fia 15 to which the button 16 is secured, the 0 set portion 11 of the member 8 being raised to such a height as to permit the plunger 12 to pass over the button-hole flap 14. In the sliding movement of the member 8, olfset portion 11 and plunger end 12, the pluner end 12 engages the button 16 and forces it through its button-hole 17 and between the fingers 6 substantially to its dotted line position indicated in Fig. 3. The fingers 6 support the under side of the button-hole flap 14 around the button-hole 17, thereby preventing any undue strain on such portions. The plunger 12 is provided in such a form thatit will not injure the button 16. Upon movement of the button from its full line position to its dotted line position, as indicated in Fig. 3, the button edge 15 of the shoe will be temporarily moved into its dotted line position indicated in this figure and upon withdrawing the plunger 12 will assume its normal full line position. 'Button 16 in being forced throi gh the button-hole 17 Will be moved pivotally on its fastening 18, whether this fastening be a metallic one or threads.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction. set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modiof the appended claim.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
An unbuttoning device comprising a mem- Patented Oct. 7,1913.'
