To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Dernier-1 D. PETERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Polk, State of Ore on, have invented certain newand useful mprovements in Tool-Handles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to tool handles and more particularly to handles for holding files.
An object of my invention is to provide a handle Within which a file may be securely fastened and from which the tool may be readily removed when desired.
Another object is to provide a file handle comprising cross members between the outer ends of which one end of the tool may be securely held while the other ends of said members are securely held against opposite faces of the tool end by a latch member carried upon the side of one of said cross menibers, whereby the end of the tool may be l readily released by pressin thefree end of the latch member against tie jaw by which it is carried.
Another object is to provide a detachable tool handle of the above stated character within which the end of a too-l may be readily secured and from which the tool may be readily disengaged, t-he handle being of such construction that it may be readily and cheaply manufactured and will be strong and durableiin use.
W ith the above and other objects in view, my invention will be more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings which show a preferred embodiment of my device and then specilically pointed out in the claims which are attached to and form apart of this application.
In the drawingsz-Figure 1 is an elevational view showin the handle with a tile secured thereto. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the handle with the aws thereof separated. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary longitudinal section of the handle with the jaws thereof separated. i
Referring more specifically to the drawings, in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout, l() designates the lower jaw which is formed on the forward end of the upper handle 1l which is preferably of U-shaped form in cross section and works through the opening 12 in the forward portion of the lower handle 13 which is also preferably of U- shaped form in cross section and upon the forward end of which is formed the upper jaw 14. It will be understood that the upper handle 11 is opposed to the lower handle lil and is slightly smaller than Said lower handle so as to be received therein when the. jaws` 10 and 14 are moved toward one another.
'lhe upper handle 1l is provided with an opening 13 adjacent its forward end corresponding to the opening 12 in the lower handle 13, thej'iurpose of which will presently appear.` The handles ll and 13 are pivoted a short distance inwardly of the jaws l0 and lll, as sho-wn at 1o.
At the opposite edges of the upper jaw 14, the sides of the forward portion of the handle 13 are bent downwardly, as shown at 17 to forni side llanges to prevent movement of the tool 18, as will be later more fully stated, the flanges 17 extending downwardly against the sides` of the upper handle l1, at the opposite edges of the lower jaw 10. One of the langes 1'( is provided with an opening 1t) adapted to register with the opening 20 in the forward end of the handle 11 to receive the locking pin or latch pin 21 to sccurcly retain the jaws 10 and 14 against the upper and lower faces of the tool 18. The pin 21 is carried in the forward end of the bar 22 which is pivoted centrally between the ears 23 which project from the side of the lower handle 13 and are preferably secured against said handle by means of one of the pivots 1G.
The rear end of thebar 22 is flattened and is provided with an opening 24- to acconnn0- date the pin 25 )rejecting from the side of the handle 13 am carrying the spring 2G positioned therearound, which spring bears against the under face of the bar 22 and resiliently holds the rear end thereof outwardly of the handle 13 and against the head of the pin 25, thus retaining the latch pin 21 within the openingsl 19 and 20. By pressing the rear end -of the bar 22 against the tension of the spring .26, the latch pin 21 will be withdrawn from the openings 19 and 20 thus unlocking the jaws 10 and 14 to permit of separation of said jaws to remove the tool 18.
A tool penetrating pin 27 is secured in the upper jaw 14 and is of such length as to extend through a suitable opening in the vend of the tool 18 and through the opening 28 wit-hin the lower jaw 10 when said lower jaw is engaged against the under face of the tool 18 thus preventing withdrawal of the too-l when the jaws 10 and 14: are engaged against its opposite iaces. I have shown a reinforcing plate 29 secured to the upper face of the upper jaw 14 with its opposite side edges bent upwardly, as shown at 30, said side edges 30 having thei" rear portions positioned inwardly of the sides of the iewer handle 13 to prevent rotation of the plate 29. The pin 27 extends through the plate 29 with its head engaged against said plate. By the use of this plate, the upper `jaw 14 is properly reinforced, thus making it possible for the jaws 14 and 10 to securely hold the end of the tool 18 therebetween.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a handle which will securely hold a file or other tool between the jaws of the forward ends of the cross members, said jaws being securely locked together. It will further be seen that should it be desired to release the tool, it is simply necessary to press the thumb against the rear end of the bar 22 to withdraw the latch pin 21 from the openings 19 and 20 and then separate the jaws, after which the tool may be readily removed from the penetrating pin 27.
It will of course be understood that minor changes in the details of construction may be made if desired without in the slightest degree departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim is l 1. A. handle comprising cross members having apertured jaws formed upon their forward ends, overlapping flanges carried by said jaws, and formed with apertures means carried by one of the jaws and adapted for engagement through the aperture of the opposite jaw and through a tool handle positioned between said jaws, and means carried by one of the handles` and adapted for engagement through the apertures of the flanges of the jaws to lock the latter in position against the tool handle therebetween.
2. A tool handle comprising pivoted members one of which projects through the other, jaws at the outer end of said 1ne1nbers being provided with transverse apertures and arranged to receive a tool therebe tween, means positioned through the jaws -and the tool for preventing withdrawal of the latter, and a latch member carried by one of said pivoted members and normally engaged through the apertured portions of the pivoted members for retainin the jaws engaged against opposite faces o the tool.
