PatentedSept.16,1913.
- Application 111611111116 12,1912. Serial n 703,144,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CAREY A. CHESHIRE,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Des Moines, county of Polk, and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feeding Mechanisms, of which the following is a rovide a feeding mechanism here y t e number of sheets delivered to the machine to which the device is attached may be god and regulatedand the device be ad uSted to various thicknesses or sizes of articles to be delivered to the machine.
Among the other objects of the present invention, it is designed'to provide a means whereby the article may be delivered to the feed rolls of the attached machine without any sagging thereof whatsoever, in order that the same may pass through said feed rolls and be delivered to theattached ma chine in perfect condition.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention, Fig. 2- is a top plan view thereof, and Fig. 3 1s a partial section taken along line 3+3 of Fig. 1.
Reference bcin had more particularly to the drawings, 10 indicates generally a frame provided with a central guide bar 11. A
I T-bar 12 is mounted for reciprocation in the guide bar 11 and carries the transversely arranged supporting bar l4twhich is disposed at right angles to the bar 12. Mounted in the rame 10 adjacent to the bar 11 are the printing cylinders 13 or a mechanism the articles are being fed. Adjacent to the cylinders 13' and interposed between said cylinders and the bar 11 are the feeding rollers 14 which are mounted upon the shafts 15 extending transversely inthe feed rollers 14.
From' the foregoin seen that as the p ate 22 reciprocates through the instrumentality of the {bar 12 the stack of -sections of books or sheets oi paper 30 carried thereby will be engaged by the stop 21. The bottom sheet will therefore be carried forward by the plate 22, the finger 29 of said plate passing between the two central rollers 17 and extending therethrough 11 until the sheet of paper is engaged by the These rollers carry the A plurality of bearings 16 are formed 60 vertical side bars 19 secured 5 that said finger it will clehrly be bar 27 and be retained in the hopper constituted by the vertical rods 19' and sheet of paper or section of book between the cylinders 13 and insure the positive delivery of said article to the cylinders in perfoot condition and without sagging. By providing a gate or stop bar 27 with Lil-21djustment, it is possible to adapt the feeding mechanism to all thicknesses of articles, it being possible to vary the same accord ing to the work. The finger 29 supports the outer edge of the sheet to be delivered to the press and does not permit the same to sag prior to this engagement by the feeding rollers 14, the space between the finger 29 and the stop bar 27 being equal to the article operated upon.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. .1, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by'Letters Patent isz, r
1. The combination with a plurality of cooperating pairs of feed rollers spaced apart, of a hopper; and a downwardly curved reoiprocatory base plate for said hopper adapted to remove artieles therefrom, said base plate being provided at its forward end with. a single centrally projecting finger arranged to pass into a space between said pairs of rollers and deliver articles (thereto, said finger being down- Wardly curved to correspond to said base plate, substantially as described.
2. The combination with feed rollers of a hopper; a downwardly curved reciprocatory base plate for said hopper provided with a forwardly and centrally extending finger, said finger being downwardly curved to correspond to said base plate; and a vertically adjustable stop bar positioned over said finger, substantially as described.
3. The combination with feed rollers, of a hopper; a downwardly curved reciprocatory base plate for said hopper provided with a single forwardly and centrally extending finger; and a stop bar positioned over said finger, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
