FILING-CABINET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 9,1913.
Application filed February 27, 1911. Serial No. 611,199.
provide a simple, practical and effective device of this kind, and especially to arrange for the easy and ready locking and unlocking of the drawer or drawers, or other similar part of the device, and to accomplish this and other desirable results in 'a simple and expeditious manner. Y
In the arrangement herein set forth for carrying out my invention I show a filing cabinet `in which the drawers are locked by` means of a shiftable rod engaging grooves in the sides of the drawers, the rod preferably being of an ordinary, straight kind, and the grooves in the drawers being simple straight grooves. This has t-he advantage of simplicity and cheapness, and ready operability.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a view of a filing cabinetfembodying my present invention, a. portion of the same being shown in vertical section to illustrate the drawer locking mechanism; Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2 2 in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a partial section taken on line 3 3 in Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken on line il- 4: in Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a view of one of the drawers showing a method of filing articles therein. Y
Referring to Fig. l I show a cabinet having upright corner posts 1 and 2, mounted on pedestals or feet, 3 3. A series of drawers 1 -4: are arranged one above the other, and below the drawers is a hinged door 5, arranged to swing downwardly t-o open. Above the drawers is a top 6.
The post 2 is made with a vertical recess or groove 7 ,Y in which is arranged a shiftable rod 8, which is arranged to be moved laterally and downwardly, in said groove, and is supported at its upper end by a bell crank 9, pivoted at 10. The'bell crank 9 is provided at its upper end with a slot 11, by which a sliding pivotal connection is made with a rod 12 operated by a hand lever 13.l which occupies a recess in the top (3 and is conveniently located at the under side of said top just above the uppermost drawer. Fastened to the under side of the top also is the spring catch lll, which holds the lever 13 in the unlocking position. The drawers 1 -1 are provided with grooves or recesses at their sides which extend clear from top to bottom ofeachl drawer so that when all the drawers are in lineand in proper closed position a continuous groove is made by the series of recesses arranged in alinement with one another. rlhe door 5 is provided with a groove 15 'in alinement with the grooves in the drawers.
The bar is out of the way when in unlocking position, which is a ldistinct advantage.
By manipulating the handle 3 the rod 12 and bell crank 9 can be operated so that the rod 8 can be thro-wn into the grooves of the drawers and thereby lock the same as shown in Fig. 1. This locking of course locks all of the drawers simultaneously, and in irm position. By manipulating the rod 13 in another way the drawers will be unlocked by withdrawing said rod from their side grooves or recesses. The door 5 will also be locked by the rod 8.
It will be understood that changes and modifications can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
VVha-t I claim is:
A device of the class specified comprising a series of drawers, a frame for the same having side and top members, one of the side members having a vertical channel and the top member having a horizontal channel, a bell crank pivoted in said vertical channel, near the upper end thereof, a vertically disposed locking bar or rod having its upper end pivoted to the lower end of said bell crank, said bell crank and bar being arranged to lock said drawers when said bar is in its lowest position, a horizontally disposed rod 12 pivotally connected to the upper end of said bell crank and arranged in said horizontal channel, a hand lever 13 pivoted to the under side of said top member in the rear of said rod 12 and projecting forwardly and forward of said rod 12, the
forward end of said rod 13 being adapted n Witness whereof, I'h'ereutl Subscribe to be glaspe'd by the hand, said rod 1Q being my name this 17th day of February A. D., pivotally connected to the rod 13, and ay 1911.
catch 14; secured to said top member and 'GRGE C. GERATY. adapted to engage the lever 13 when said YVtnQsses: levevs swung to'one side, so as to lift said A. LYDA JONES,
