Be it known that I, THoMAs J. GIBBONS, citizen of the United States, residing at Farmington, in the county of Fulton and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet-Stretchers, of which the, following is a specification, reference. being bad therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to carpet stretchers" and has reference to a device which will hold the carpet in a stretched position while the same is being tacked to the floor.

Another object of this invention is the production of a novel and eflicient means for holding the stretcher bar in a central position upon a guiding bar while the carpet is being stretched. V

With these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel combina tions, constructions, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings :F igure 1 is a perspective view of the stretcher. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a part of the operating mechanism showing a portion of the same in section. Fig. 3 is a erspective view ofthe attaching plate showlng the stretcher bar in section. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the attaching yoke which may be used inconneotion with this device showing 'the stretcher bar in section. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the stop.

Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals it will be seen that the device consists of a guiding bar 1 which carries at its inner end a block 2. Mounted upon the under side of the guiding bar 1 is an anchoring member 3 which is provided with a prong 4 and head 5, whereby the same will be driven in the floor for preventing the stretcher from moving. The bar 1 and the block 2 are held together by means of the bolts 6 which pass therethrough.

The block 2 is provided with a centrally located aperture 7 through which the shaft 8 passes. Mounted upon this shaft 8 are the ratchet wheels 9 which are held in place by means of the screws 10. In order to operate the device there is provided an operating handle 11 which is provided upon its lower portion with a squared head 12. Mounted upon this squared head are the plates 18, said plates 13 being adapted to straddle the block 2 and be carried by the Specification of'LettersBatent. The handle 11 also carries the pawl member 1 1 which is adapted toeng age the ratchet wheel 9 whereby the shaft 8 may be rotated.

Mounted upon the end portions of the shaft 8 are the detachable drums 15 which are held thereon by means of the screws 16. The drums 15 are adapted to hold the ropes 17 which are attached to the stretcher bar 18 by means of the attaching plates ,19. The plates 19 are provided with a plurality of apertures 20 whereby the hooks 21 which are carriedby the ropes 17 may be shifted when so desired. In order to hold the stretcher bar 18 in a central positionrelative to the guiding bar 1 there is provided a U-shape guiding member 22 which is held vupon the stretcher bar 18 by means of the wim.

In order to allow the stretcher bar to en?" gage the carpet there are provided a plurality of teeth 24 which are formed of U- shape strands of wire which pass through the stretcher bar and extend below the lower surface of the stretcher bar.

Fig. 4 of the accompanying drawings shows a modification that may be employed instead of the plate 19. This modification comprises a single strand of wire or rod material bent into the form of a yoke 25; the legs 26 of which extend transversely through the bar 18. The yoke projects laterally from the forward longitudinal edge of the bar 18, and the corners and central portion are coiled to provide the eyes 27, 28 and 29, adapted to be selectively engaged by the hooks 21. The legs of the yoke have their freeends 30 threaded for the reception of the nuts 21 to lock the yoke to the bar 18.

There is also provided a stop which is carried by the guiding bar 1 which is adapted to prevent the rope 17 from unwinding by preventing the ratchetwheel from moving in one direction. This stop is formed from a single strand of wire and is formed to constitute an enlarged head 32 which terminates in the side arms 33, and the side arms 33 terminating in the eyes 80. When the stop is mounted upon the wire it is held in the pivot position by means of the pivot member 35.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is:
