Description

lUNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
HENRY DVIGHT VRIGHT BAILEY, OF STERLING, ILLINOIS. d
IMPROVED SPRING BED-BOTTOM.
Specification fbi-ming part ot Letters Patent No. 107,213, dated September 13, 1870.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, HENRYDWIGHT WRIGHT BAILEY, of Sterling, in the county of Whiteside and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Spring Bed-Bottoms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
Figure lis a perspective view of a bedstead to which my improvements are applied. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of detached parts, to be hereinafter referred to. 1
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawing.
My invention relates to spring bed-bottoms in which the slats are suspended within the bedstead by flexible connections; and it consists in the combination of parts, as will be hereinafter more full-y described.
In the accompanying drawing, Ais a bedstead of ordinary construction, provided upon the inner side ot' the head and foot rails with an additional rail or strip, B. C C are loops, composed of india-rubber or other elastic niaterial, suspended upon the proximate sides of the rails B by means ot' leather straps or loops y I), nailed or otherwise secured to the upper tic loops C, which are prevented from sliding upon the slats by means of the shoulders formed by the tenons and by the rails B, beneath which the tenons extend, as shown clearly in Fig.2. By this connection the'slats are permitted a vertical play, but cannot rise above the rails B to become detached from the loops. Their lateral play is also restricted by the rails B.
For the purpose of connecting the slats together with a iiexible connection, a leather strap, F, is provided with a series of loops, g, through which the slats are passed, as shown in Fi 1, the strap being extended transversely across thev whole number of slats at about the center of the bedstead. This special form of connection need not necessarily be employed, as any other form having flexibility may be used with th e same effect. By this method of conn ecting the slats together, when one is depressed it carries with it those adjacent, and therefore distributes the weight equally upon a number or all of the slats.
X/Vhen the slats have been used to sustain a weight upon one side for a considerable length otl time they are liable to become bent or bowed downward in the center, and, as a consequence,
render the bed uncomfortable to rest upon. My invention overcomes this difiiculty, as the slats can be at any time turned over or reversed separately without removing them from the loops or strap F.
If one slat becomes broken, its place may be supplied with tritling labor without disturbing any of the others.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the bed-rails B, slats E, elastic loops C, loops D, and flexible strap F, all arranged as described, for the purpose specilied.
HENRY DWIGHT WRIGHT BAILEY.
