Specification of Letters Patent.

To all 'to/mn'z it may concern lie it known that we, PEARL Hans and JEREMIAH J. McNnnNny, citizens of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Pins; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to pins, and more particularly to pins for identification purposes, and has as its object to provide an identification device which will consist o't' an ordinary safety pin, and certain elements attached thereto, producing a device for the purpose mentioned, which. will be simple and which will be extremely cheap, using as it does an ordinary safety pin and an additional single element stamped from sheet metal.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the foregoing specification and it will. be understood that changes may be made in the specific structure shown and described without departing from the spirit oi the invention as defined by the appended claims.

In the drawings forming a portion of this specifimition and in which like numbers ot retcrencc indicate similar parts of the several views, Figure 1 is an elevational view of the complete device. Fig. 3 is a plan of the blank from which the swinging member is formed, and Fig. at is a detailed perspective view of the swinging member detached.

Referring now to the drawings, the presentinvention co-n'iprises a safety pin including the back bar 2, at one end of which there is located the keeper 5), and which, at its opposite end is bent into the usual loop, integral with which there is formed the spring pin bar 1 movable into and out of engagement with the keeper. The loop above referred to is indicated at .t in the drawings.

In use, the identification of the wearer oi? the device is written upon a slip of paper which is folded and inserted between the sides 5, in the space indicated at 10, the retaining member having been raised as shown in Fig. The retaining member is then moved into the position shown in Fig. '1 when the slip of paper having the identification thereon will be tirml held in place. The resilience oi the metal from which the detaining device is formed result s in srdlicient friction between the moving parts to hold the member closed against the back bar of the pin.

WVhat is claimed is:

1. The combination with a safety pin, of means for holding an identification slip thereto, said means consisting of a member having side portions lying at opposite sides of the back bar of the pin and having cars at one end lying at opposite sides oi the loop of the pin, said ears having their central portions stamped in 'ardly within the inclosure oi the loop for pivotal movement of the member with respect to the pin and for the prevention oi disengagement oi the member bodily from the pin.

2. The combination with a safety pin, of means for holding an identification slip thereto, said means consisting of a retaining member adapted for coaction with a portion of the pin to hold the identification slip thcrebetween, and means eoaicting with the loop of the pin for pivotally connecting the holding member thereto.

3.
