of reference marked thereon, which forni a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an ,improved valve for sanitary bubbling fountains and for other uses.
Among the objects of the invention is to provide a valve device o this character which may ne readily manipulated and is adjustable to vary the flow of water therea through to correspond with tne pressure or head of the water so as to produce the dcsired flow at the bowl or cup oit the fountain,
Atits closely Within the opening 22 and is -provided at its lower end with a reduced screw-threaded portion .26 which extends linto the nipple 20. Upon 'said reduced when embodied in such fountain.
Other objects of the invention are to provide an improved valve for this and like purposes which is simple in construction, which may be easily operated, and to pro duce a valve the parts of wnich are protected from unauthorized access to thereby preyent tampering with the valve by unauthorized persons.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafterv set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Figure l is an axial section, with parts in elevation7 of' a bubbling fountain enr bodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a section of the valvel` iechanisui with the parts .shown in changed positions. Fig. is a plan View et the cup or bowl of tht` fountain.
As shown in the .irawiug's. l@ designates a hollow, horizontally arranged shank i'o'r the cup `ll of thetountain7 said cup liarirrer an upwardly shaped bell er flaring mouth l2,
The widernnf.;4 of the :rim or 'mtarreuus Inusa widel rim. flange 1,4 of the cup 'as ad milch, as it avoids a. sharp e i oli icrson using the fountain may be 3 e" forced infn manner' to injure the same. The. pf sind cup is internally screw- 15 andv tits over and has screwfagernent with an exteriorly si:
4 al. this; point lowerend Y nigiple er Harige i6 near the outer end of the 'shank l0. The inner 4end 1S of said shank is formed to-provide a Casing to inelose the valve mechanism for the. 'fountain` and said casing may be provided with the nipple 19, 20, which may be arranged at right angles, as shown, to each other,
one adapted for connection with a water' supply pipe and the other with a draw ott' valve 2l. The two nipples or extensions 19 :1nd 20 are provided to permit the device to be connected to either a horizontal or a vertical pipe, and when so constructed the draw ofi1 valve 21 ma f nected to the nipple th the supply pipe.
be conveniently conat is not connected to At the bottom of the rear end of the hollow shank l0, which rear end iis closed., is a vertical opening 22, around the lower side of which may be formed a valve :23` the wall of said opening being oi: substantial depth.
241 designates a hollowi yalve piece which screw-tlnreaded portion 26 is fitted a Washer 27 to constitute a valve seat to engage the. seat 23, as best shown in Fig. 2 (the latter figure showing the valve in its closed po( sition). Said vseat washer is held pressed against a downwardly facing shoulder of the valve piece 24 by means of a nut 28 which is locked in place by the lock nut 29.
The valve piece is rovided with an upwardly extending tu ular stem, 31 which extends` thrpug'h an openinglin the upper wall ol the shank that is in line with the :lol
valve oiufmng 22, and said stem extendsinto a tubular bonnet 32 made integrallwith said shank. The said stern is externally srrew-thrcaded at iis upper end to receive the internally screwthreaded member 33 of a cup 34, which has an annular flange portion $55 that fits over -and has close sliding en lsagement with the upper end of the bonnet v"at-er tight joint is formed between the said valve stern and the upper wall o1 the shank l0 by means of a packing or Kgland consisting of a body o?? packing nia- 'terial il? which is interposed between the upper con-ieally shaped wall of the shank l0 and a follower ring 38 surrounding the stem. :follow-r ring being pressed upon the packing material and the packing material thereby compressed byA means of a spiral expansion spring 4() which is interposed between the cap 34 and follower ring 38.
The valve piece 24 is provided with two pairs of vertically separated inlet and outlet ports 42, 43, the ports of each pair communicating with the hollow interior 44 of thc valve piece and extending in Opposite directions therefrom as herein shown.
l-Vhen the valve piece is in its upper posilower or inlet ports 42 are thereby brought beneath the valve seat, and the valve ring or washer 27 is removedfrom said seat, so that at this time the said inlet ports are open to the pressure or head of the water supply. The water is free to flow` therefore, through the inlet ports and the bore of the valve piece 44, and is discharged through the outlet ports 43 into the rear end of the hollow shank through which it passes to thecup in :t manner hereinafter described.
In order to regulate the flow of water through the valve and to cut down the initial volume at the receiving side of the valve to that required at the cup of the fountain, I
may provide a regulating device which is made as follows: 4G designates a short rod which is contained within the hollow stem of the valve piece and extends at its lower end downwardly into the bere 44 of said valve piece. Said rod is screw-threaded at its lower endI` as indicated at 47, to engage internal screw threads 1n the upper end of the bore of the valve piece above the outlet ports 43. By turning said rod thus screwthreaded to the valve piece downwardly toward the outlet ports 423, the area of said ports may be restricted more or less to Correspondingly restrict the fiow of water through said ports and the pressure at which the water issues from said ports. The said regulating rod may thus be turned to regulate the pressure by means of a suit-able implement applied to a slot 48 at the upper end of the rod, and near the upper end of the valve piece stem. ln this manner I am able to restrict the outlet ports and vary the volume of water passing therefrom and correspondingly vary the pressure without distui'binggT the operating members of the valve n'iechanism, and without. therefore cutting ott the flow of water through the valve.
As herein shown the upper end of the valve stein is closed and the notched or grooved end of the regulating rod is protected by means of a knob 50 which is interiorly screw-threaded to engage over the exterior screw threads of the stem, as best shown in Fig. 2. The knob 50 constitutes, in addition to the functions described, a lock nut by which to securely lock the cap 34 on the valve piece stem. ln order to prevent water escaping around the regulating rod. I may provide the same with a shallow groove 52 (Fig. 2) in which to place. an annular packing 53 of any suitable material that fit-s closely within the hollow valve piece stem.
As herein shown the draw off valve 21 is provided with an externally threaded tubular extension or nipple 54 which is adapted to fit into either one of the internally screwthreaded projections 19 or 20, depending upon to which (projection the water supply pipe is connecte When said draw oft valve 21 is employed the lower extension 26 of the valve piece may be provided with a passage 56 which is in open communication with the high pressure side of the valve when the valve piece is depressed, as shown in Fig'.,` 1,` so that water may be at such time drawn from the device through the valve 21, as when it is desired to draw a glass of water from the device. Then the valve piece 24 occupies its upper or normal position water under the initial pressure of the system from which the water is supplied is free to pass` directly to the draw olf valve 21.
As herein shown the supporting member or shank 10 of the fountain is .formed with a central7 longitudinal diaphragu'i G0 to provide an upper passage 61 through which the water is conducted from the cut off valve to the cup. Said diaphragm also provides at the lower side of the shank a waste pai-'sage which receives water from a waste opening 63 at the bottom of the cup and conducts it to an outlet or waste nipple 64 at the rear of the supporting member or shank. The said nipple 64 may be screw-threaded to receive a waste pipe, or the water may flow therefrom into a receptacle beneath the same. The passage (31 terminates centrally within the cup in an upstanding tubular member 6G, and which is shown as provided with a detachably fitted terminal 67 which of the cup while at the same time maintaining the terminal`67 of the watersupply passage sufficiently low in the cup to prevent Contact with the lips or tbe teeth ot the person drinkingV from the fountain.
lin order to produce :ind maintain a Slitticiently rapid flow ofthe waste vater away trom the device, l may provide the diaphragm 6th :lt or near the waste opening 64, with :i small openingV ('l through which they waiter may tlow in :i jet directly from the passage (l1 to the rem' end of the Waste pais- Szige (32. The jet of water thus formed nerves the outlet nipple and neross they stream of water Whirh e apes from the ivnste passage. with the elfeet to keep the outlet nipple filled `with water.
