Description

of the United States,
ythe accompanying drawing,
PETER V055,
'li'ioation ATFLNT OFFICE.
.nierstenen Speel-naalden of Letters Patent.
WI Ea- To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, nrnn Voss, citizen rresiding at Alliance in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful lmpi'ovements in and Relating to Filing Ap- .pliances,of which the following is a speci- T-lris invention relates to a filing appliance or card index, or card system. For the purpose of illustration, l have, in i shown and herein described one form of filing lappliance' embodying my invention, it being obvious that to those skilled in the art of {iling appliances, many alterations in construction and application of i of cards and a follower embodying' my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the follower. Fig. 3 is a perspective View' of 4the follower. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary View showing the application of a friction-increasing device to the drawer or holder.
In the drawing, 1 indicates a support or holder. It preferably comprises a drawer having a bottom la, sides 1" (only one side being shown), a front wall 1e uand a rear wall, Awhich latter is not shown.
2 indicates filed in the holder 1, one behind the other and arranged on their lower edges as is eustomary in keeping records of any kind by a card system. Thel cards 2 may include suitable index, division or title-carrying cards, such as'may be found necessary in the system.
3 indicates a follower mounted in the holder 1. lt is movable or adjustable from end to end thereof in either direction to accommodate itself to the'number of cards .iii the holder, or the increase or decrease in number thereof from time to time. The fol lower 3 comprises three members designated by the reference characters 3, 3b and 3"; the member 3a serving to carry a portion of the cards and interposed between them and the bottom 1a of the holder 1; the member il operating as a back, abutment or rest for the rearinost card 2 and supporting it i and the cards forward thereof in an apmy `invention- -will suggest themselves without departing tions 5C the the cards or papers which are tiidinally of the drawer or holder l. .devices may comprise one or proximately vertical position; and the member 3 extending downwardly and rearwardly from and serving as a support therefor.
ils shown in the drawing, the members 3a, 3b and 3c may be formed from a single section of sheet metal that is bent on transverse lines 3d, 3e, to form them. Preferably,
the angle between the bottom member 3 and the back 3h is slightly greater than a right angle in order that the cards @may be inclined rearwardly. The supporting member 3C being somewhat longer than the back 3b in a vertical direction, it maintains the bottoni member 3 at an angle to the bottom la of the holder 1, so that said bottom member will engage or rest on' the bottom l2L along its forward edge only. By this construction it will be seen that the weight of the cards 2 on the bottom member 3 will be carried by the forward edge of said member and the lower or free edge of the sup porting member 3.
The supporting member 3c is preferably provided with a series of teeth or projecfree ends of which may be sharpened or pointed in order that they may, vunder the influence of the weight of the cards, slightly penetrate the surface of the bottom 1:L and prevent the follower from slipping or sliding freely on the bottom. lt will also beseen that as the supporting member 3 is connected to the back 3' along its upper edge, it is so disposed as to ,prevent the upsetting of the follower.
l indicates friction-increasing devices, which may in some instances be used to prevent the sliding of the follower 3 longi- These more plates fixed to the bottom 1, They extend substantially from end to end of the bottom and aline with the teeth or projections 3c of the follower support 3C.' The upper surfaces of the devices a are roughened or serrated, asshown at 4a, to form grooves in which the pointed ends of the teeth 8 may be received. l
As will be clearly understood from Fig. l of the drawing, the serrations el will lock the follower against movement or adjustment longitudinally of the drawer, except when the follower slightly elevated t0 raise the teeth above the serrations.
