Be it known that I, JONATHAN E. BOURNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Marion and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Sash-Lock; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful sash look.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a view in perspective, showing the improved sash look, as applied. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view through the window frame and the upper sash, showing the sash lock in elevation, with the cap plate removed, so as to show the locking bolt in engagement with the window frame and the upper sash. Fig. 3 is a sectional View on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail view in perspective of the two locking bolts. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 55 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings 1 designates a casing, which is provided with a downwardly extending plate having apertures, for the reception of screws 2, whereby the casing may be fastened to the upper left hand corner of the lower sash, as shown in Fig. 1. A cover plate 3 for the casing is secured thereto by the screws 4. One end of the casing is provided with an annular opening 5, through which the bolt 6 extends. This bolt 6 is mounted slidably in a passage 7 of the easing, and is formed with a rectangular portion 8, which terminates in a shoulder 9 midway the length of the bolt. This rectangular portion terminates in a restricted portion 10, and adjoining this portion is a recess 11. A substantially U-shaped plate 12 is provided, one side of which is received in the recess, while the other side is secured to the top face of the restricted portion of the bolt, by means of the screws 13, which hold the first side in the recess. Between the arched portion of the plate 12, which arched portion is denoted by the numeral 13, and the end of the restricted portion of the bolt is a space 14. The arched portion 13 is formed with an offset curved portion 16, the purpose of which will presently appear.
A bolt 17 extending transversely of the casing at right angles and in the rear of the bolt 6 is provided. This bolt 17 comprises a justed positions, while the bolt 6 engages the depressions 22 of the window frame.
' One of the pins 20 is arranged in the space 14, and also operates in the offset curved portion 16.
By partially rotating the bolt 17, the bolt 6 is reciprocated in one directionor the other, to lock or unlock the lower sash. If the bolt 17 is rotated in order to throw the bolt 6 in lockingengagement with the depressions of the wvindow frame, the other pin 20 will contact with the rear of the arched portion 13, thus limiting the bolt 6 in its movement. After the bolt 6 has been thrown to locking position, the bolt 17 is reciprocated to cause the head 21 to engage any one of the depressions of the upper sash. To hold the head 21 in such engagement, a lug 23 extending radially from the bolt 17 is provided. This lu'g 23 engages a recess 24 of an enlargement 25 of the casing, thus holding the bolt 17 from being withdrawn from its depression, until the bolt 17 is partially rotated, in order to free the lug of the recess 24. The bolt 17 performs two functions, first to actuate the bolt 6, second to engage any one of the depressions of the upper sash. By these two bolts the upper and lower sashes may be locked in closed positions or in various open positions.
From the foregoing it will be observed that, not only an efiicient and desirable sash lock has been devised, but one which has been found practical;
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed to be new and useful is In combination, a window frame having depressions, an upper and lower sash mounted in the frame, the upper sash having a series of depressions, a casing secured to the lower sash adjacent to the frame, a sliding bolt mounted in the casing adapted to engage any one of the depressions of the frame, the sliding bolt having a U-shaped strap secured thereto with the arched end of the strap spaced .apart from the end of the bolt, :1 second bolt having a skeleton portion with a part arranged in the arch of'the strap, the depressions of the frame and the upper 10 thereby constituting a slidable, movable consash.-
