ADAM B. STOLEB AND ALFRED W. I-IEWSON, 0E PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINATION VEGETABLE-CUTTER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ADAM B. SroLER and ALFRED IV. HEwsoN, citizens of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Vegetable-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in vegetable cutters and has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device for coring apples rapidly, means being also provided for removing the cores from the apples cut.
IVith the above and other objects in view our invention consists in the combination, arrangement, and details of construction disclosed in the description, and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, wherein similar reference characters designate similar parts, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section of our invention, Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof, partly in section showing the cutter and corer parts, Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 with the apple removed and showing the cutter in full lines, and Fig. 4 is a detail plan view of the base plate to be described.
Referring to the drawings which are merely illustrative of our invention, a base is designated 1 and has an opening 2 formed therein. An upright standard 3 is formed with a bottom portion 4 which, with the standard, is secured upon base 1, by any suitable means, such as bolts 4. Intermediate its ends the standard 3 carries an outwardly-extending arm 5, and fulcrumed at 10 upon a boss 6 on said standard is a lever 8, having an operating handle 11, a rigid rod 7 being pivoted at 9 to said lever 8, said rod having an upper shoulder 12 and an intermediate shoulder 13, said rod projecting through an opening in the arm 5. spring 14 is coiled around rod 7 and bears against the shoulders 12 and 13 respectively. Below arm 5 the projecting part of rod 7 is formed with screw-threads at its free end, and said screw-threads are engaged by the internally screw-threaded shoulder 15 formed upon a rod 16, which rod is screw- Specification of Letters Patent.

threaded into a core receiving block 17, a spring 18 being coiled around rod 16 bearing at one end against the removable shoulder 15 and at its opposite end against the base 19 of a tubular member 20 formed with a peripheral knife-edge 21 to form a cutter.
The tubular member surrounds and incloses the block 17 in telescoping relation, and formed eXteriorly of said tubular member is an annular flange 22 serving as a stop to limit the movement thereof.
A base-plate is designated 23 and rests upon the shoulder 25 formed on part 4 of standard 3, said base plate having an opening 24 through which the tubular member 20 is arranged to project. Supposing an apple to rest on the base-plate 23, as shown in Fig. 2, the device will operate as follows: By means of handle 11, lever 8 will be given a downward stroke, causing the springs 14 and 18 to be both compressed. The portion 4 is formed with an opening registering with the opening in base-plate 23, and by moving lever 8 down the rod 16 will descend and will force the knife-edge 21 of tubular member 20 into the apple, and its knifeedge 21 will penetrate the apple. The tubular member 20 will move a predetermined distance as its annular flange 22 will bear upon the base plate 28, and the rod 16 being able to move farther downward, the block 22 disposed in said tubular member will move in unison and will move against the part of the apple cut by and inclosed in said tubular member, and when the core has been completely out by the knife-edge 21, said block will, if lever 8 be moved down far enough, force the core into the discharge opening 2 of base 1. When the lever 8 is actuated the tubular member 20 will project through the opening in the base plate, and when said lever is relieved of pressure, the coil springs 14 and 18 will recoil, thereby causing said tubular member to be automatically drawn out of said opening.
Numerous modifications may be resorted to in practice without departing in principle from the details of invention disclosed.
Having described our invention we desire to secure by Letters Patent:
In a cutting implement, a base having a discharge opening therethrough, a baseplate having an aperture located over the opening in the base, a frame mounted above In testimony whereof We affix our signasald base, an operatlng rod movable upon tures,1n presence of two Witnesses.
said frame, a block secured to the lower end ADAM B STOLUR of said rod, a cylindrical oorer slidable upon ALFPED' \W K Q said rod and a spring pressing said corer x k toward said. base-plate, and stops on said Witnesses:
eorer operative to engage said base-plate HOWELL B. SI-IRIVER,
When said oorer is depressed. JOHN A. HEYsER.
