CHARLES ELIOTT JONES,
OF THREE OAKS, MICHIGAN.
CLEVIS AND CONNECTING DEVICE FOR DOUBLETBEES.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES E. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Three Oaks, in the county of Berrien and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clevises and Connecting Devices for Doubletrees; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in clevises for attachment to doublet-recs and the object in View is to produce a simple and efficient device of this nature so arranged that the clevis may be attached to the doubletree without the necessity of weakening the same by the unnecessary boring of holes through the same.
More specifically, the present invention comprises a whifl'letree attachment consisting of a casting or bearing plate adapted to be fastened to the edge of the whiffletree and having slots therein for the reception of cam-shaped projections upon laterally projecting lugs which form bearings for the said plate and provide means for preventing the clevis from spreading when under strain.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the application of my invention to a doubletree. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the doubletree. Fig. 3 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view through the clevis. Fig. 4 is an edge view of the clevis removed, and Fig. 5 is an edge view of the casting forming a bearing for the clevis.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a doubletree, to one face of which a casting B is bolted or otherwise secured. Said casting is provided with laterally projecting flanges C which are concaved as at D, forming bearings for the laterally projecting portions E of the clevis E. Each of said portions E has a cam-shaped flange F which is adapted to bear against the inner face of the grooved flanges in which the clevis has a bearing and also adapted to engage the slot H formed in Specification of Letters Patent.

said casting. It will be noted upon reference to the drawings that there are two of said slots, formed one upon either side of a central projecting lug N, which latter is apertured as at N for the reception of a cotter key K which passes through the hollow projections at the ends of the lugs having said cam-shaped flanges.
By the provision of a clevis and connections as shown for attachment to a doubletree, it will be noted that, when the clevis is in shape to receive the pull upon the double tree, the cam-shaped flanges will engage the slots in the casting and prevent any lateral movement to the ends of the clevis, said flanges frictionally engaging the edges of the slots and also the inner faces of the flanges which are grooved and form bearings to the clevises. When the cotter key is withdrawn from the registering apertures in the hollow projections of the clevis and the lug upon the casting, the clevis will be free from the casting.
What I claim to be new is 1. A clevis and connecting device for doubletrees comprising a casting for attach.- ment to the edge of a doubletree and pro vided with laterally projecting flanges which are grooved to form bearings, a clevis having hollow projections upon the arms there of, each projection having a cam flange adapted to coi'iperate with the casting to prevent the clevis from spreading, and a key passing through registering apertures in said projections of the clevis and an aperture in the casting, as set forth.
2. A clevis and connecting device for dear bletrees comprising a casting for attachment to the edge of a doubletree and provided with laterally projecting flanges which are grooved to form bearings, a clevis having hollow projections upon the arms thereof and each terminating in a cam flange, said casting having slots for the reception of said cam flanges, and a cotter key passing through apertures in said projections and in the projection of said casting, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto atfixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
