To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY G. VOIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Unit-Lock Construction, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to looks of the unit type provided with a cylinder lock operable from the exterior of the door to retract the bolt when the latter has been locked against retraction by the exterior knob, as by the night latch mechanism.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a cylinder lock mechanism operable by a series of keys including a change or guest key and a guard or display key.
It frequently happens that a guest leaving a room does not care to have the same open to access by the maid or housekeeper through the master and grand master keys, as in the case of valuable goods being within the room on display. It is, therefore, desirable to provide means whereby this cylinder lock mechanism is rendered inoperative by any of the series of keys except one special key which may be retained by the owner of the building for instance, which special key is operative not only to shut out the apartment against the other keys, but also to operate the cylinder lock mechanism to retract the bolt.
To this end my invention consists in the construction and relative arrangement of parts more particularly pointed out in the following detailed specification taken together with the accompanying drawings forming partthereof and illustrating a preferable embodiment of the invention.
In these drawings, Figure 1 is atop plan view of a unit lock of conventional form to which the present invention is applied. Fig. 9. is a view in front exterior elevation of said lock, showing the barrel of the knobcarried cylinder lock in shut out posi tion. Fig. 3 is a relatively enlarged detail view in end elevation of the cylinder'lock mechanism removed and with the barrel in position for lock operation. Fig. 4 is a similar view with the barrel in lock shut out position. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal vertical section on the line 55 of- Fig. 3 and with the change key, for instance, inserted therein. Fig. 6 is a transverse vertical section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5. Fig. '4' is a longitudinal vertical section on the line 77 of Fig. at, the guard or display key being inserted in the lock. Fig. 8 is a transverse vertical section on the line 88 Fig. 7.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 indicates the frame, 2 the casing of the latch mechanism, 3 and 4 the inside and outside escutcheon plates respectively, and 5 the latch bolt of a unit lock mechanism of standard construction, 6 and 7 being the inside and outside knob spindles, and 8 and 9 their inside and outside knobs respectively. These knobs are ordinarily operative to retract the latch bolt 5 through the latch mechanism referred to. Suitable means as a night latch mechanism or a thumb turn mechanism is provided for blocking the retraction of the latch bolt by means of the exterior knob. I have not illustrated these parts in detail as, specifically, they form no part of the present invention which consists in the combination with a lock of this general type, and functions, of the cylinder lock mechanism hereinbefore referred to. This mechanism is mounted within the hollow outside knob 9 and comprises a casing 10 seated therein and housing a rotatable barrel or plug 11 having therein the usual slot 12 for the key. Extending outwardly from the casing 10 and radially of the plug 11 is a casing 13 housing a primary tumbler mechanism comprising a plurality of pin tumblers 14 of usual construction arranged to cooperate with the key slot 12 in the plug in the usual manner, the tumblers being forced into operative positions by springs 15. These tumblers cooperate withv a series of keys including a guest or chan e key and a display or look out key 1 which series of keys are all bitted to position said tumblers to permit the turning of the plug (in this instance in a clockwise direction) to actuate the latch mechanism to retract the latch. The plug is, of course, appropriately connected with the latch. mechanism to effect this result as means of a spindle 18 to which it is rigidly connected and which in turn is connected with the inside knob spindle 6 so as to retract the latch bolt independently of the outside knob.
Extending radially of the barrel 11 and spaced circumferentially of the first casing is a second casing 19h0using a secondary tumbler mechanism which includes a plurality of pin tumblers 20 of usual construction, normally held in operative locking position by n'ieans of coil springs Ql. This tumbler mechanism is arranged to coopcrate with the shut out key 17 only, so as to permit the barrel or plug to be rotated in a direction to retract the latch and is located on the side of the primary tumbler mechanism opposite the direction of latch retracting movement of the barrel.
The ei'itire series of keys hcreinbefore referred to as so bitted as to bring the ends of the pin tumblers of the primary tumbler mechani:-.=m on the line of break between the barrel and casing so that the barrel can be rotated to retract the latch bolt. The secondary tumbler mechanism is, however, provided with at least one tumbler which is designed to cooperate only with one of the series of keys,thc display or shut out keywhich key is also adapted to cooperate with the primary tumbler mechanism to rotate the barrel. hen the barrel 11 is .in a position to bring its key slot 12 vertically and in line with the tumbler casing 13, a key inserted therein cooperates with the primary tumbler mechanism. and by turning the key and barrel in a clockwise direction (see Fig. 3) the latch bolt may be retracted. The secondary tumbler mechanism is alined with the key slot 12 when the latter is turned in a. counterclockwise direction to bring itself in alinement with the casing 19. lVhen the tumbler barrel is thus turned the pin tumblers of the secondary tumbler mechanism lock this barrel against rotation except through one key only of a series of keys-namely, the display or shut out key. This is accomplished as follows: The pin tumblers of the primary and secondary mechanisms correspond, except to the last or innermost pin tumbler. In the secondary tumbler mechanism, the uppermost section of the inner pin tumbler "20 is provided with an upwardly extending stop pin 21. The hitting of the change key 16 and of all of the rest of the series of keys except the display or shut out key, is such that the end hitting of these keys, as at 16 of the change key 16, is high-er than the end hitting 17 of the display or shut out key 17.
The sections of the end or innermost pin tumblers of the primary tumbler mecha nism, are so arranged that they cooperate with the end hitting 17 of the display key 17 to permit the display key to rotate the barrel 11 in either direction. If the display key is inserted in the barrel with the latter in the position shown in Fig. 3, and then turned in a counterclockwise direction to bring its key slot in alinement with the secondary tumbler mechanism, as shown in Fig. at, and the display key then withdrawn, the cylinder lock mechanism is absolutely shut out or blocked against operation by any of the other keys of the series.
This is accomplished by reason. of the fact that when any of these other keys of the series are inserted, as for instance the display key 16, its end hitting 16 being higher than that of the display key, will. more the end. tumbler 20 of the secondary tumbler mechanism upwardly to bring its stop pin 21v against the top of the casing 19 and will prevent the full insertion of the change key 16 or any of the other keys of the series except the display key. The proportions of the parts described are, of course, so figured as to give this result. The barrel, therefore, can not be disengaged from its interlocking engagement with the secondary tumbler mechanism by any of the keys of the series except the display key, and the cylinder lock mechanism is, therefore, rendered in.- operative by any of the other keys of said series as aforesaid. The display key, how ever, may be inserted in the lock when the parts are in position shown in Fig. 4, and its low end hitting 17 will permit the sections of the end tumbler 20 to drop to bring the end of one of said sections on the line of break between the barrel 11 and the casing 10, so that, with the display key, the barrel may be turned from the position shown in Fig. 4 to that shown in Fig. 3 and thence in a clockwise direction to retract the latch bolt.
From the foregoing it will be seen that access to the. room may be barred absolutely, except by means of a single key carried by one in authority, such as the proprietor or manager, who may, by the same means, open the latch mechanism, retract the latch bolt, and open the door.
While I have herein shown and described a specific embodiment of my invention, it will. be understood, of course, that various structural changes and modifications are possible within. the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.

In a unit lock mechanism, a frame, a knob, a latch bolt, latch mechanism connecting said knob and bolt, means for blocking the operation of said latch mechanism by said knob, a cylinder lock mechanism operatively connected to said latch mechanism to operate the same independently of said knob and blocking means, said cylinder lock mechanism embodying a rotatable barrel adapted to operate said latch mechanism, a primary tumbler mechanism cooperating therewith and with a series of keys, and a secondary and separate tumbler mechanism cooperating with said barrel and operable to permit latch retracting movement thereof by one certain key only of said series.

In a unit lock mechanism, a frame, a hollow knob, a latch bolt, latch mechanism connecting said bolt and knob and operable by said knob to retract said bolt, means for blocking the retraction of said bolt by said knob, a cylinder lock mechanism carried within said hollow knob and operatively connected to said latch mechanism to operate the same independently of said knob and blocking means, said cylinder lock mechanism embodying a rotatable barrel in operative connection with said latch mechanism, a primary pin tumbler mechanism arranged radially of said barrel cooperating therewith and with a series of keys including a change key and a display key to operate said latch mechanism, and a secondary radially arranged pin tumbler mechanism separate and circumferentially spaced from the first cooperating with said barrel and operable to permit latch retracting movement thereof by said display key only.

In a unit lock mechanism, a frame, a hollow knob, a latch bolt, latch mechanism connecting said bolt and knob and operable by said knob to retract said bolt, means for blocking the retraction of said bolt by said knob, a cylinder lock mechanism carried within said hollow knob and operatively connected to said latch mechanism to operate the same independently of said knob and blocking means, said cylinder lock mechanism embodying a rotatable barrel in operative connection with said latch mechanism, a primary pin tumbler mechanism arranged radially of said barrel cooperating therewith and with a series of keys including a change key and a display key to operate said latch mechanism, and a' second-. ary radially arranged pin tumbler mechanism separate and circumferentially spaced from the first cooperating with said barrel and operable to permit latch retracting movement thereof by said display key only, said secondary mechanism including at least one pin tumbler constructed and arranged to block the insertion of any of the other of said keys when said barrel and secondary tumbler mechanism are interlocked by the pin tumblers of said mechanism- 6. In a unit lock mechanism, a frame, a knob, a latch bolt, latch mechanism connecting said knob and bolt, means for blocking the operation of said latch mechanism by said knob, a cylinder lock mechanism to operate the same independently of said knob and blocking means, said cylinder lock mechanism embodying a rotatable barrel adapted to operate said latch mechanism, a primary tumbler mechanism cooperating therewith and with a series of keys, and a secondary and separate tumbler mechanism cobperating with said barrel and operable to permit latch retracting movement thereof by one certain key only of said series, said secondary tumbler mechanism being constructed and arranged to block insertion of the other keys of said series.

In a unit lock mechanism, a frame, a hollow knob, a latch bolt, latch mechanism connecting said bolt and knob and operable by said knob to retract said bolt, means for blocking the retraction of said bolt by said knob, a cylinder lock mechanism carried within said hollow knob and operatively connected to said latch mechanism to operate the same independently of said knob and blocking means, said cylinder lock mechanism embodying a rotatable barrel in operative connection with said latch mechanism, a primary pin tumbler mechansm arranged radially of said barrel cooperating therewith and with a series of keys including a change key and a display key to operate said latch mechanism, and a secondary radially arranged pin tumbler mechanism separate and circumferentially spaced from the first cooperating with said barrel and operable to permit latch retracting movement thereof by said display key only and constructed and arranged to block the insertion of the other keys of said series.

As an article of manufacture, a cylinder lock mechanism embodying a rotatable barrel, a relatively stationary casing therefor, a primary pin tumbler mechanism carried by said casing and cooperating with said. barrel and with a series of keys, a secondary pin tumbler mechanism carried by said casing spaced from the first tumbler mechanism and cooperating With said barrel, said secondary pin tumbler mechanism including a tumbler member cooperating With one certain key of said series, to per mit rotation of said barrel, but arranged to cooperate with the other keys of said series to block insertion of said keys When said barrel and said secondary pin tumbler mechanism are in cooperating interlocked relation.

As an article of manufacture, a cylin der lock mechanism embodying a rotatable barrel having a key slot therein, a relatively stationary casing inclosing and concentric to said barrel, a primary pin mechanism carried by said casing extending radially of said barrel and cooperating with its keyslot and with av series of keys arranged to engage said tumbler mechanism to permit rotation of said barrel, a second separate pin tumbler mechanism carried by said casing extending radially of said barrel and spaced from said first tumbler mechanism, said second tumbler mechanism cooperating with the key-slot of said barrel and includ ing one certain pin tumbler arranged to cooperate with one certain key of said series of keys to permit rotation of said barrel, but arranged to block the insertion of the other keys of said series to prevent rotation of said barrel by said other keys.
