- HAYES ASSIGNOR T0 sen) STEELE.
To all whom may concern Be it 'known that. we, BENJAMIN P.
HAY S and ALBERT H. STEELE, citizens of I the United States,"residing at Kansas City,
Our invention relates to a change maker in the county ofeJackson and State of Mis- A YSOIIII, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Change-Makers; and
we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable. others skilled in the art to which-it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon,
thebase, taken from'the rear to illustrate which form a part of this specification.
and has-for its principal object to provide a'device of that character having separate receptacles for coins of different denominamaker constructed according to our invention. 'Figi II is an end view of thesame.
vFig. III is a "vertical section through one of the receptacles, showing the mechanism for extractinga coin therefrom, the slide and spring being shown in rearward posi-' tion in'dotted lines. Fig. IV is a perspective. view of the receptacle base, showing the slides. Fig. V- is a vertical section of the rods; 'Fig. VI is an inverted view of a rear corner of. the base, showing the attachment of the suspended tray or platform.
Fig. .VIII a detail view of one of the d s.-- a
Fig. VII is a perspective view of the tray.
3 Referring..mor'e in detail to the parts:

base.
Fltting over the top of'the tubes 4 is a keeper me1nber'5 which is alsopreferably stamped from sheet metal and has upset portions 6 for receiving the upper ends of the tubes 4 and holding same firmly on the basel.
The upper ends of the tubes'are preferably beveled and the forward portion of the member 5 bent downwardly to fit over is cut between the ribs to form the com-ares 10, and the rear portion has a slot 11 for each separate chamber.
To secure the parts ,mentioned together, we provide the forward stay bolts 12 which extend through the flanges 13 on the upper member 5, throughspacing tubes 14 interposed-between the flanges and base 1, and through the base and platform ribs't), beneath which they are preferably riveted. lVe also provide rearv hanger rods 15, which extend through the rear corners of the member 5, through spacing tubes 16, interposed between the members 5 and base 1, through base 1, and through upturned tongues 17 on the rear corners of the platform 8, beneath which latter the lower ends of said rods are riveted. Beds 1.) have buttons 18 whichl)ear against the top of the'member 5, and the upper ends of said rods are turned to form the hooks 19 for hanging the device to the clothing of a seats arranged throughout the length'of the 55 thereagainst. When the slide is at the rear- Ward limit of its travel the lower end of the Base 1 has an edge flange which .is
turned downwardly at the ends and back of the base to cover the platform and inclose the chambers formed between the back movement on the platform, but
is held in line by the ribs 9 and base flange 20, the thickness of the slides being but slightly less than that of the chambers to I obviate lost vertical motion.
The forward end of each slide is concaved on an are having substantially the same radius as the coin to be carried in the tube surmounting the slide, and depending from the concaved part is an ear 2% which extends through platform slot 11 and carries a forwardly projecting button 25. The ear and button are preferably formed by stamping out the forwardend of. the slide, and the forward portion of the buttonis preferably provided with an inset socket 26 for receiving the finger of a user, and such inset part being preferably knurled in order to facilitate the operation.
Fixed to the back of each tube 4 is a Hat spring 27, the lower end of which is free and projects through a slot 28 in base 1 and through the slots 11 in the latform, seating in a notch 29 in the back 0 the slide 23 and yieldingly holding the latter forwardly.
The slots 11 are so arranged that when the parts are assembled the slides will only cover about one-half of the lower tube opening, so that when in their normal position they will hold the coins in the tubes and need only travel a short distance backwardly to expose the tube so that the lower coin will drop onto the platform. The base slots 28 are of such length that the slides are stopped when the concaved forward ends are in exposing position.
In using the device, presuming the parts to be assembled'as described, with coins in the tubes 4, each stack of coins is held within its tube by the slide for that tube. When it is desired to withdraw a coin from a tube, the slide is pushed back against the tension of its spring 27 by placing a finger in the knurled recess 26 and pushing rearwardly tube-is exposed and the lower coin in the tube drops down onto the platform. The slide is thenreleased and is forwarded by the spring 27, the front end engaging the coin on theplatform and moving same on through the mouth 22 into .position to be grasped by the fingers of the operator; the
body of the slide being again interposed be- 'neath the stack to prevent the escapement of other coins until a succeeding operation.
It is apparent that with a sufficiently strong spring, should the slide be -released suddenly the coin maybe shot out of the'device into the hand of the operator, without the necessity of being withdrawn by hand.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is 1. The combination with a platform, hav-- ing spaced front to back ribs rising therefrom, a base seated .on said ribs, and having openings communicating with the spaces between said ribs, and having front to back slots, tubes mounted on said base over the openings, slides adapted for-travel on the platform beneath the tubes, and springs having their'upper ends fixed-to the tubes and their lower ends extended through the base slots and connected with said slides, for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination with a platform having front to back slots therein, and having upturned ribs paralleling the slots, a base seated-on said ribs, said base having openings communicating with the spaces between the ribs, andhaving front to back slots at the rear of said openings, tubes mounted on said base over the openings, slides adapted for travel on the platform between the ribs, and having ears turned downwardly through the platform slots, and provided with finger buttons, and springs having their upper ends fixedto the tubes and their lower ends extended through the base slots and connected with the slldes, whereby the latter are normally retained below the tubes, for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination with a platform, having raised, parallel ribs, and having slots paralleling the ribs and set back from the front edge of the platform, a base mounted on the ribs and spaced thereby from the platform to provide channels, said base having openings adapted for delivery into the channels, slides adapted for travel in said channels, and having ears projected. through the platform slots and provided with the finer buttons, and springs for normally yieldingly retaining sald slides beneath the tubes, for the purpose set forth.
.4. The combination'gwith a platform, having raised parallel ribs, and having slots opening rearwardly from the front edge ofthe platform, a base seated on said ribs, and having lips depending over, the front ends thereof to form channel mouths, said base having openings adapted for delivery into the channels formed. by said :platform and ribs, and having slots opening rearwardly from the openings, slides adapted for travel in said channels, and having ears proiected through the platformslots, and having for wardly extending finger buttons exposed beneath the base, -and springs fixed to said tubes and extending through the base slots, whereby the slides are-normally yieldingly retained in position for. supporting "coins within the tubes, and above the channels, substantially as set forth;
In testimony whereof we affix our signatnres in presenceof two witnesses.
BENJAMIN P. HAYES. ALBERT H. STEELE.
