KEITH MONTGOMERY, OF J .AGKSON VILLE, ILLINOIS.
DEVICE FOR DISPLAYING DRY GOODS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. October 19, 1912.
Patented July 29,1913.
Serial No. 726,691.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KEITH MONTGOMERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jacksonville, in the county of Morgan and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Displaying Dry Goods, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to display racks and particularly to a device of this character adapted for the display of cloth or other goods in rolls or bolts, and especially remnants.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which clamps upon the bolt board and which holds the loose end of the goods clamped tightly upon a frame.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which allows the frame holding the end of the goods to be swung backward and forward in order to expose to view the goods upon bolts back of the first one.
An important object is the provision of an improved clamping member adapted for use in securing the goods upon the frame and in gripping the roll or bolt board.
A further object is the provision of a rack within which the rolls or bolts may be conveniently held.
Another object is the provision of a device of this character which is inexpensive to manufacture, durable in service, and neat in appearance.
Other objects and advantages will be made apparent during the course of the following description and pointed out in the subjoined claims.
Referring to the drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved rack showing rolls or bolts therein equipped with my improved frames, Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the rack, and Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are detail views of one of the clamping members.
Referring more particularly to the drawings,'the numeral 1 designates a base which may conveniently be a table top. Adjacent each side of the base 1 is a groove 2 within which is mounted a rod 3 supported from the base 1, as at 4. Guards 5 are mounted upon the rods 3 and comprise U-shaped rods 6 having their lower ends connected with tubular guides 7 which are slidable upon the rods 3. The bolts 8 of cloth or other material are adapted to be held upon the base 1 and retained in position by means of the guards 5. The bolts 8 comprise the usual bolt board 9 upon which the goods is wound.
In order to adapt the bolts of goods for use in my rack, I provide frames 10 of cardboard, wood, or other suitable material upon which the end of the goods is wound to any desired extent, though one complete turn is sufiicient. Clamps 11 are then placed over the ends of the bolt boards 9 and also similar clamps are placedv upon the ends of the frames 10, gripping the goods thereto. The clamps 11 have each secured thereto a rod 12 provided upon its end with an eye 13. The rods 12 on each adjacent pair of clamps are connected by means of these eyes, which serve as hinges. The clamps should be so arranged upon the boards 9 and frames 10 that the eye 13 will be disposed at substantially the juncture of the frame 10 and the board 9. Each of these clamp members comprises a pair of plates 14 provided with ears 15 through which the rod 12 passes, serving as a pivot. A spring 16 surrounds the rod 12 between the ears 15 and has its ends 17 abutting against the plates 14, tending to hold them apart at their rear ends. The plates 14 are provided at their forward ends with depressions or grooves 18 for a purpose to be described. Mounted on the rod 12 midway of the ears 15 is a bolt 19 having screwed upon its outer end a wing nut 20 having a conical shank 21 adapted to engage the depressions 18.
It will be readily seen that when the wing nut 20 is unscrewed the spring 16 will force the ends of the plates 14 away from each other, thus allowing the clamp to be placed in position. By screwing up the nut 20 the conical shank 21 will engage the depressions 18 and force the other ends of the plates 14 together, thus clamping them firmly in place.
It will be readily understood that my rack and frame need not necessarily be used for the display of remnants as that is merely a convenient use for it.
In case the quantity of goods in the rolls or bolts be small, it may be desirable to insert partitions of wood or card-board be tween some of the bolts to allow more space to be occupied by the wing nuts.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. In a display rack of the character described, the combination of a rack with a plurality of frames held therein, each of said frames comprising members detachably and hingedly connected and adapted to have material wound thereon.
2. In a display rack, the combination of a rack with a plurality of frames held therein, each of said frames comprising a section disposed within said rack, and a second section disposed above said rack, both of said sections being hingedly and detachably con nected and adapted to have material wound thereon.
3. In a device for the display of dry goods comprising a rack adapted to hold bolts of material, a plurality of frames connected with said bolts, said connections comprising members detachably mounted upon the ends of said bolts, similar members detachably mounted upon the ends of said frames, and
links connected with said members and pivotally connected with each other.
4:. In a device of the character described comprising a rack adapted to hold bolts of goods, a plurality of frames hingedly connected with said bolts, said connections comprising clamps disposed upon the ends of the bolts and other similar clamps disposed upon the ends of the frames, and links rigidly connected with said clamps and pivotally connected with each other.
5. A device for the display of dry goods consisting of a rack and a plurality of frames therein adapted to hold the material for display, each of said frames comprising a pair of members detachably secured to each other by clamps flexibly connected.
In testimony whereof I hereto afiiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
