To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that I, RICHARD I Ln Broo of New York. Kings count-y, New York, have invented a. new and useful Improvement in Controllers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact iicscription.
My invention relates to improvements i controllers for electric current such as are used on elevator cars or the lilze' The object. of my invention is to produce a controller which can be operated in the ordinary way to regulate the current for stopping and starting the car, and to combine with a. controller of this character means for locking the controller so that it cannotbe operated to stop or start the car except when the car is clear of a floor, or
the door of the caris closed ready for starting. In other words, I provide an electromagnetic locking device which absolutely locks the controller when the car door is open, thus avoiding accidents occasioned by the premature starting of car.
Another object of my invention is to make the apparatus as simple and reliable as possible, and to arrange the locking means so that ordinarily it will not interfere with the free operation of the con- ,the customary insulating back-plate 10 which has a box 11 covering the controller mechanism. and a slot 12 through which the controller lever 13 projects and in which it swings. this lever having the customary insulating handle. The lever is preferably bent outward near its inner end as shown at 1-1, and it is fulcrumed 11115 on the swinging arm 16 which turns on the pivot 17, and

lever 2Z5 is normally pressed inward toward the plate 10 by a.- iiat spring 18 which presses against the bulge ll of the level 13, and. the spring is secured to a boss 19 on the lower part of the contact arm 16, and is stiffened and helo. taut against the lever 13 by a cotter pin 20 which extends through the lugs 21 projecting forward from the contact arm 18 and straddling the lever 13. The lever carries near its upper end a contact roller 22 which engages the contact plate 23 and the contact is lzept close by the spring 18 above referred to. The contact arm 16 also has branching members 2% carrying contact rollers which contact with the contact points 26 and, 27 connecting with the motor circuit, but I have not shown the motor circuit in this case because it has nothing to do with my present invention, which comprises the means for locking the lever and contact arm so that the lever and arm cannot be swung except at the right time.
As frequently arranged in elevators, the movement of the lever 13 which brings the contacts 22 and 23 together, stops the motor, and a movement to the right or left so as to bring the contacts 25 into engagement with the contacts 26 and 27, causes the m0- tor to startso as to move the elevator up or down as desired. By having the con tacts 22 and 23 in the position shown in Fig. 2, the elevator cannot be started, and therefore I provide means for swinging the lever 13 on'its axis 15, as a preliminary to moving the contact arm 16 to the right or left to start the motor. I have not given the motor circuits. because these can be of any usual or preferred type, and have nothing to do with my invention, and moreover, to show all these circuits confuses my real invention which I have herein described in detail. I
In the lower end of the lever 13 and below the fulcrum 15, is a socket 28 which receives the end of a pin 29 held in the lower end of the cont-act arm 16, and it will be seen that when the pin is in the socket the lever cannot be swung on its fulcrum 15, and the contact arm 16 cannot be swung on it's fulcrum 17 because of the mechanism presently described. The pin 29' is normally pressedout by a spring 30 which is coiled around it,
- and it is moved against the tension of the spring by the boss 31. on onealrm of theing .the bell-crank 32 carries an armature 36 hell'cran'klever 32 which is arranged below the contact arm 16, and is t'ulcrumed as shown at 33 on the plate 34- which issecured to the insulating plate 10. The upper arm of the bell crank 32 has cars 35 which straddie the boss 19 at the lower end of the contact arm 16, so that when the pin 29 is raised to lock the lever 13, the cars 35 will also look the contact arm 16 to prevent it from swingon itsfulcrum 17. The lower arm of which swings opposite the electro-magnet 37, this being arranged within the box or-' casing 11.

elevator car 38 which moves opposite the several floors 39 in the ordinary manner, and the elevator well is provided with sliding doors 40 which can be of any approved type and which open and close the entrance to the car 38 when the latter is opposite a floor.

It will be seen that when the circuit is closed through'the magnet .37, the armatur' 36 will be drawn. toward the magnet, and the upper arm 01 the bell crank raised so as to lock the contact arm 16 and lever 13, but
when the circuit is broken, the armature will swing away from the magnet, the upper arm of the bell crank will drop, and the controller lever 18 be free to swing outward on its fulcrum 15 so as to break the contact at 22- 23 and permit the lever and contact arm to be swung so as to close the circuit as usual at the points 26 and 21- Thus it will be noticed that the controller cannot. be oper-.
ated, and the car cannot leave a floor, until the door. 4L0 is closed so as to break the circui through the magnet.
When the elevator car 38 reaches a noon, the lever 13 is turned to the central position, thus stopping-the elevator car, and when the door is opened, the circuit breaker 4:1 closes the circuit through the magnet 3?, thus pulling on thearmatur'e 36 and forcing the pin' 29 into the socket 28 of the lever 13, thereby looking the lever and preventing any movement of the controller arm to start the car. When the door is again closed, the circuit through the magnet is broken, and the lever 13 can then be swung onits axis 15 and moved to right or left to close a motor circuit and start the mot-0r and elevator. Thus the opening of a door will close the circuit through the magnet 37 and lock the lever 13 when it is brought to the central position. Consequently it will be seen that the car cannot be started except when the door is closed.
I have not shown the circuit breakers 41 in detail, but anyone skilled in the art will understand the form of circuit breaker to be used.
I claim 1. A controller comprising a swinging contact, arm arranged to make and break an electric circuit, a lever pivoted on the contact arm to swing at an angle to the axis of the contact arm, said lever being adapted to close and open the circuit of a motor, a locking device to simultaneously lock the lever and the contact arm, electromagnetic means for controlling the locking device, and circuit breakers in the circuit of the magnet.
