CASING-COVER AND LOCKING- MECHANISM THEREFOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 15, 1913.
Application filed November 2 5, 1912. Serial No. 733,566.
To all whomit may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER (jllntrinnm, a, citizen of the United States of America, residing at Los i-ingeles, in the county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Casing- (lovcr and Locking M chanism Therefor; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and. use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in casing cover and locking mechanism therefor, and it may be said to cons st in the provision of the novel tures and in the novel and im 'n'ovcd construction, arrangement and coniibii'iaticn of parts as will be apparent from the description and claims which follow hereinafter.
Objects of the invention are to provide an improved construction for the cover and locking mechanism which is very simple in character, economical to manufacture, easily and quickly nnniipulated and convenient in use, effective in action, and in which the number of parts is reduced to a minimum.
Other objects and the advai'itagcs of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the artfrom a COIlSlClGIZLtlOJl of the following description of preferred forms of construction embodying it, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a partly broken and sectional view in s de elevation showing one form of construction eml'iodying the invention; Fig. is apartly broken and sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a partial view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4c is plan view, partly in section, of another form of the construction embodying the invention; Fig. 5 is a partial view taken on the line 5 5 of ('3; Fig. 6 is a partly broken side elevation of the construction shown in Fig 1; Fig. 7 is a partly broken side elevation of another form of construction embodying the invention; Fig. 8 is a partly broken plan view of the construction shown in Fig. '7. and Fig. 9 is a modification of the construction shown in Fig.
In the drawings, the different forms of construction embodying the invent-ion is shown adapted to be applied to a cylindrical casing 2. T he preferably ring-shape part 3 is adapted to it over the upper end portion of the casing on which it may be held by set screws 4 or other suitable means. The cover 5 adapted to it on the top end of the casing is preferably provided on the underside thereof with an annular recess 6 in which may be fitted a suitable gasket 7 adapted to be interposed between the cover and the top end of the casing. Substantially centrally on the top of the cover 2 are provided upstanding lugs 8 between which on a pivot 9 is mounted the yoke 10; one end of the yoke being mounted on the pivot 11 between the cars 12 on the part 3 and the other end of the yoke being provided with a projecting portion 13 having thereon the handle 14.
In the form of the cinistruction shown in Figs. 1, '2 and 3, the part 8 is provided with an upwardly extending part 15 which is formed with a recess 16 in the upper end portion thereof to receive the projecting portion 13 of the yoke 10. On the upper end of the part 15 is mounted on a pivot 16 one end of a plate 17 which may have the other end thereof provided with a slot 18 in order that when the projecting portion 13 of the yoke 10 is disposed in the recess 16 the plate 17 may be moved across the projecting portion 13 and held by the headed. pin 19 which is adapted to fit in the slot 1.8 A screw 20 is mounted in the plate 17 and adapted to be turned by handle 21 to engage the projecting portion 13 of the yoke 10 to clamp and lock the cover 5 on the casing 2.
In the form of the construction shown in Fi l, 5, and 6, the part 3 is provided with u nvardly extending parts 22 between which the projecting portion 13 of the yoke 10 may be disposed. Cheek plates 23 may be provided at each end with downwardly diverging projections 241. and 25; the projections 2% being mounted on a pivot 26 011 the car 27 on one of the parts 22, and the projections having pivotally mounted thereon a bolt 28 adapted to movably fit between projections 29 on the other of the parts 22 and having suitably aflixed on the lower end portion thereof a part 30 adapted to engage with the projections 29 in looking position. The handle 31. is provided with an eccentric head 82 mounted on pivot 32 between the check plates 23, which when the bolt 28 is fitted between the projections 29 may be moved by the handle 31 into pressing engagement with the projecting portion 13 of the yoke 10 to lock the cover 5 in posi tion; a spring pressed detent 33may be mounted on the eccentric head 32 and adapted to move between sector teeth 34 on one of the cheek plates 23 to hold the eccentric head 32 in locking position.
In the form of construction shown in Figs. 7 and 8, the bolt 35 may have one end thereof mounted on a pivot 36 between projecting parts 37 on the part 3, the other end portion of the bolt 35 being threaded and adapted to be movably fitted in a notch 38 in the projecting portion 13 of the yoke 10. On the threaded end portion of the bolt 35 is fitted a head 39 which when the bolt 35 is disposed in the notch 38 is adapted to be turned by a handle 40 into pressing engagement with the projecting portion 13 of the yoke 10 to lock the cover 5.
As seen in Fig. 9, in lieu of the springpressed detent 33 a dog 41 may have one end thereof mounted on a pivot 42 on the eccentric head 32; the other end of the dog 41 being adapted to coact with the teeth 43 on the cheek plates 23 to hold the eccentric head 32 in looking position.
Many minor changes and modifications of the various forms of construction illustrated and described will occur to those skilled in the art, wherefore the right is reserved to all such changes and modifications as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A device of the class specified, comprising a part adapted to be fitted over the top end portion of a casing, a cover for the easing, a yoke pivotally connected with the cover, said yoke having one end thereof pivotally connected with said part and having Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the on the other end thereof a projecting portion, a handle on the projecting portion, and means on said part adapted to co-act with said projecting portion to lock the cover in closed position on the casing, said means including a pivoted member, a handle, and a part mounted on said member and adapted to be turned by the last mentioned handle into pressing engagement with said projecting portion.
2. A device of the class specified, comprising a part adapted to be fitted over the top end portion of a casing, a cover for the easing, a yoke pivotally connected with the cover, said yoke having one end thereof pivotally connected with said part and having on the other end thereof a projecting. portion provided with a notch therein, a handle on the projecting portion, a bolt having one end thereof pivotally connected with said part and having the free end portion thereof threaded and adapted to fit into said notch, a handle, and a head fast on the last handle and fitted on the threaded free end portion of the bolt and adapted to be turned by the last handle into pressing engagement with the projecting portion of the yoke to lock the cover in closed position on the casmg.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses at Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles, State of California. this 16th day of November A. D. 1912.
