.UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY HARRIER, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORN-FLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 106,693, dated August 23, 1870.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY HARRIER, of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain Improvements in Corn-Flows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of cornplows in which side beams furnished with hoes or shovels are hinged to the forward end of a central beam, also furnished with a hoe or shovel; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the plow, combined with attaching the handles to the rear ends of the side beams, and pivoting them to a horizontal transverse bar fixed to the upper part of the central stock insuch amanner that the side plows may be expanded or contracted at pleasme by the plowman during the progress of the plow, the object being to provide a simple and comparatively inexpensive device to accomplish the above-mentioned purpose.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the plow. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.
A. B is the center beam and stock or" the plow, and G D the beams and stocks ot'the side plows. Two metal plates, E, are rigidly fixed to the front end of the middle beam, and to the outer ends of these plates the forward ends of the beams O of the side plows are pivoted, as shown.
F F are the handles, through which a mortise is made to receive the ends of the horizontal cross-bar G, the latter being rigidly attached to the stock B of the center plow. A pin through slots in the handles into the cross-bar G serves as a pivot or fulcrum for the handles to turn upon. The lower ends of the handles are tached by staples or other convenient means to the rear of the stocks of the side plows, as shown.
It will be readily understood that 'by this construction and arrangementofthesideplows, pivoted by their forward ends in the metal plate E, and the handles F, pivoted to the cross bar G, and having their lower ends pivoted or otherwise similarly attached to the rear of the side plow, the latter may be expanded or contracted at pleasure by the plowman, as may be required; also, that both the side plows may be moved to either the right or left, or so that either of them may be moved in or out to adapt them to any uneveness of the corn-rows.
It will also be understood that the capacity of the plow may be increased by adding another beam-stock and hoe, rigidly fixed on the outside ot'the side plows, whiehmay he alfeoted by the handles simultaneously therewith.
I claim- The combination and arrangement of the beams G O and A, the stocks D D and B, pivoted handles F F, bar G, and plates E E, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore specified.
HENRY BARRIER.
