PENHOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 1, 1913.
Application filed August 30, 1912. Serial No. 717,934.
To all Lo/0m t may concern.'
Be it known that I, EnwiN OSTBY, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Ilankinson, in the county of Richland, State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Penholders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in pen holders, and has for its object to so construct a device of this character that the pen may be removed from the holder when the same has become useless without soiling the fingers.
NVith these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereimifter more fully described, claimed and illus- -trated in Athe accompanying drawing, `in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through. the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. l. Fig. et is a detaill perspective view of the spring.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral l designates a handle having secured to one end the metallic barrel 2, said barrel having a longitudinal slot 3 formed in its upper surface, the purpose of which will appear later. Contained within the barrel is a leaf spring 4t, which has its body portion 5 disposed obliquely within the barrel, the in ner end of said body portion terminating in an extension (3 which passes through the slot 3 and is slidable therein. Secured to the outer end of the extension (3 is a button 7 which when engaged by the finger will move the spring :t backwardly and forwardly within the barrel 2. The outer end of the body portion 5 terminates in a reversibly bent plate 8, the same being concave-convex in cross section, and adapted to engage the peil point to hold the same firmly clamped against a portion of the barrel 2. From this construction it will be seen that a pen point may be conveniently inserted between the plate 8 and barrel 3 and after the same has become useless it lnay be removed upon sliding the spring elforwardly.
i lip t) is formed integral with the plate 8 and is adapted to prevent the pen point from being inserted too :far in the barrel said lip also serving to positively eject the pen point when the plate S is moved forwardly.
lVhat is claimed is:-
A peli holder comprising a barrel having a longitudinal slot formed in its upper sur face, a leaf spring having its body portion arranged diagonally within the barrel, the inner end of said spring terminating in an extension which engages in said slot, a button secured to the outer end of the exten-- sion, the outer end of said body portion terminating in a reversibly bent plate, said plate being concavo-convex in cross section, and having a lip formed upon its inner end and slidably engaging' the interior of the barrel, as and for the purpose set forth.
