ARTHUR B. KENDRICK, OF EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR T0 JAMES R. KEN- DRIGK C0., INC., OE PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENN- SYLVANIA.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR B. KnNDRIcK, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex and .State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Abdominal Belts or Supporters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to abdominal belts or supporters of that class which include a body belt portion and thigh straps attached to the sides of the belt portion.
The object of the invention is to provide a belt or supporter of novel, simple and etlicient construction, having provision where by the body belt portion and the thigh straps may each be rendered longitudinally elastic and the elastic portions of the straps so related to the elastic portions of the body belt that the entire device may readily adapt itself to the figure of the wearer in a manner to permit the device to be worn with ease and comfort while performing its function as a supporter.
Vith the object thus generally stated, the invention will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a face view of my im roved abdominal belt or supporter, in attened out condition. Fig. 2 is a front view thereof, as applied to the body of a person. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail showing the adjacent elastic threads of the body belt portion and one of the thigh straps and tle knitted binder threads in which the elastic threads are woven and which attach the thigh straps to the body belt. 1 designates the body belt portion constructed of longitudinally-extending elastic threads 2 interwoven with or bound together by knitted binder threads 3, as shown in Fig. 3. The binder threads 2 are net shown in Figs. l and 2, because the scale is too small, but it will be readily understood that the elastic threads 2 are bound together throughout the entire body belt portion by a continuous net Work of the knitted binder threads shown in Fig. 3, thereby rendering said portion longitudinally elastic. central portion of the body belt is fashioned Wider than the end portions thereof by shirring, as shown. Sewed or otherwise secured to each end of the body belt 1 is a piece of leather 4 or other suitable material The Specification of" Letters Patent.

provided with eyelets 5 to receive a suitable lacing to draw the ends of the body belt toward each other and secure them together after the belt has been laced around the body of the wearer with t e widened central portion lin the abdominal region. To protect the wearer from the lacing engaged with the eyelets 5 I provide one end of the body belt 1 with a flap l6 adapted to lie between the lacing and the wearer when the belt is in use. The body belt 1 is provided with suitably located stays 7 as shown. Attached to the body belt 1 are thigh straps 8 each of which is constructed of longitudi nally-extending elastic threads 9 interwoven with or bound together by knitted binder threads `1st, as shown in Fig. 3. The binder threads 14 are not shown 1n Figs. 1 and 2, on account of the small scale, but it will be understood that the elastic threads 9 are bound together throughout by a continuous network of the knitted binder threads shown in Fig. 3, thereby rendering said straps longitudinally elastic. Sewed or otherwise secured to one end of each strap 8 is a piece of leather 10 or other suitable material provided with a longitudinally-arranged series of eyelets 11; and sewed or otherwise secured to the other end of each strap 8 is a piece of leather 12 or other suitable material provided with a hook 13.
After the body belt 1 is applied to the wearer the straps 8 are passed around the thighs of the wearer and after being ad` justed to the desired degree of tightness one of the eyelets 11 ofeach strap is engaged with the hook 13 of each strap thereby securing the ends of each strap together. Each thigh strap is attached to the body belt 1 between the points 14 and 15 one strap on one side and the other strap on the other side of the body belt. The elastic threads 9 of each strap 8 between the points 14; and 15 extend substantially parallel to the adjacent elastic threads 2 of the body belt 1 between the points 14 and 15; and each strap S is attached to the body belt 1 by having the knitted binder threads 10 interlaced with the knitted binder threads 3 between the points 14 and l5 as shown in detail in Fig. 3. It will thus be seen that on each side of the entire device the body belt 1 and the thigh strap 8 form in effect an unbroken piece of fabric of substantially parallel elastic threads interwoven with a continuous network of knitted binder threads extending from the top of the body belt l to the bottom of the thigh strapS between 'the points 14C and 15. l
By the construction of the thigh strapsj and by the arrangement of the threads of the thigh straps relatively to the threads of the body belt l hereinbefore described l have discovered that the thigh straps 8 will hold the body belt down in position and at the same time give ease and comfort to the wearer. During various body movements of the wearer, each side of tlie entire device between the points 14 and 15 will yield not only in a longitudinal direction but also in a diagonal direction..
ln the drawingsll have shown each thigh strap 8 torrned of two sections of interwoven elastic threads and binder threads, the two sections of each strap being joined by having a piece of tape 16 sewed to the meeting ends thereof.
ll claim:
An abdominal belt or supporter compris- Loeaeee ing a body belt .portion provided withlongitudinally-extending elastic threads inter-v threads7 means for securing the ends of said portion together, thigh straps attached to the bottoms of the sides of said portion and being providedA with longitudinally-extending elastic threads interwoven with binder threads and rendering said straps longitudinally elastic, the elastic threads of each strap extending substantially parallel to the adjacentelastic threads of said Jortion, and means for securing the ends o `said straps together.
lln testimony whereof l aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
