DRAWER-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application tiled May 23,1912. Serial No. 699,223.
To dit `11i/mnt if muy confiera le it known that I, JonN V. HwANsox. a eitizen ot the United States. and a resident ot Boston, in the county ot' Sntl'olk and ('onnnonwealth ot| Maasaehlmette, have invented eet-tain new and usetul Improvements in llraufer-Lmk's, ot' which the tollowing ia a 'tnll and exact description.
'lhe objeet ot my inventioii is to provide improved means t'or loekintg` a ettl of drawers ala'ainzit nnwarranttal opening, by loeking one drawt alone; the improvements relating to means` wher-ehr the drawers iran at will be rendered ineapable o't being); atteeted by the Said one drawe alone, so that any one or all the drawers ran he withdrawn with entire indepeiulenre ot the etmtrolling drawer.
The improvements relate to certain detailsy ol eonstruetion hereinafter Set, t'orth.
ln the dra wings forming part'. ot' this spiazitieation, Figure il, iS a Side sectional elevation ot a set of drawers embodying my improveniente, the same being shown as loeked in position. Fig. 2 is a similar View, but showing the top drawer partly open and the other drawers unlocked. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail View on a larger seale,.0f the (lranwr lockingdevice. Fig. ft is a tace View otE parte tl'iereol". Fig. 5 is a Side View of the member carried by the top drawer for aetnating the looking deviee. Fig. t3 is a taee view oi" the Same.
nthe cane l carrying' the dra were 2, which are Shown aa three in number. has t'astened to the inner Surt'aige otf its baek three stirrnp-. fi carrying' trietion rolls At. Pietween said rollsotnd atirrup-t`ronts is Slidably lo eated a loekinjg har 5 haring' an arm (i at its upper end` and two Slots 7 at intermediate pointe. (Vig. 2.) l'nto Said slots the hooka .i re:.-ehing from the barks of the two lower dra were are adapted to enter and to be loeked (herein by the engagement ot the hooks with the upper ends o't' the Slotw, eaeli hook being pivotally held by a drawer at it). and reaill ntlynpresseifl upward by a leali Spring lt. When a. drawer is pushed in to its limit. its hook is depreeaed by the meet-- ine' oi iii"Y rounded end with the rounded edge ot the slot', until the hook is snapped upward by its; Spring into engagement with the rear sur't'aee ot the bar. liaeh hook is held from rising* above its normal horizontal position by means ojt' a lng,r 'l2 eontaeting with the inner tace o1 the. plate t3, shown in Fig'. it. w'houhl it he deaiied to hare an;V one ot' the drawers` rapahle ot' beinel poahrd into plaee without it` lor-king. ily hook or lateh t) is presaed downward to the poaition shown in dotted linea in Fig. 23. and laeeurel there by the detent ll: Fig. -l yallowing the normal p' -ition ot said detent in t'ull littea. and ita looking position in dotted lines. 'l`huS lastened down. the hook is ineapahhl ot' engagingl the upper end ot' its yalot. and ita a soriated drawer is' entirely t'ree to hr hut aml opened. 'l'hia is espeeialllr raiuahle where one drawer alone ot' the two lower ones is to he 't'reeliy movable. while permittine' the other to be under thiI loekine' (control ofthe top drawer. i
lior the eontrol of the lower drawer-V iw the topmost one, the latter is provided with an antit'rietion roll Alt rotatably supported by the plate I7 pivoted at; l!) to en'ine` laterally, as shown in Figs. 5 and t3. When this drawer is pushed in to its limit.. said roll rides up on the arm and depressea the toeking,r bar 5, the latter beingl resilientl);Y sup-- ported by a helieal Springe; ii() Surrolnuliiur its lower extremity. 3y untastening the thumb Screw 2l, and swinging the plate IT to one side, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. t3, the roll lt will eseape the arm t3 and the loeking bar \\f'ill`remain elevated and its slots too high 't'or the hooks t) tio engage the upper ends thereo'ti. The thumb Ferew 21, beineT entered into a hole Q2 at the proper plaee to hold the swinging plate and its roll thus laterally displaeed, all three ot the drawers are as tree as those ol' an ordinary ease ot.1 drawers. 'ith the roll lt in ite` noi"` mal position7 the closingr ol the topmoat4 drawer depreSaes the loeliing bar so`that the. other drawera will be automatieally loeked when thef alSo are (closed, and will he relea ed when the top drawer is opened more or lesa. ll either o'te the lower drawers lum` itl hook 't'aatened down as ahove deseribeih then it will he unatteeted b v the aetion ol' the top drawer, while the other drawer whose hooi; is normal will be automatiralllr looked .ind released by the nuw'ement'a of the top drawer. rl.`he Springt '20 abuis he tween the shoulder or collar 225 tixe/.l on the loekirrel bar 5, and the seat Qtthrough whrh the extremity ol said har freel)yr slide".
It is, ot tourse, evident that'eaeh drawer unistbe entirely withdrawn before its hooks or its roll can he altered as above @et forth.
lt is a great bother to have the diawera tl t) l Ul) llt) always automatically locked whenever 'the top draw is closed, as in all the'other self locking cases with which l am acquainted, it so often happens that it is desirable thus to shutthe drawers to lrveep ont dust and chips-when used in a shop for which i I have especially designed it,-and yet any one of thein must be free to be opened on the instant in order to get at some tool contained therein. My arrangement is consequently of considerable value, both in having all the drawers free of control at a time, and also in having any one of theni free and the others adapted to be automatically locked. Y MYV hat ll elaini as my invention and for whiell l desire Letters Patent is as follows, to wit :m
1. A ease having a plurality ofvdrawers slidable therein, in Combination with a lool?.-
'ing` device carried by each of the lower drawers, a vertically slidable looking bar adapted when depressed to engage said lock ing devices, a plate pivoted to the'rear of the topmost drawer to swing in a transverse. vertical plane, an anti-friction roll carried by said plate and adapted, when the plate is hanging in its normal position, to engage the upper end of said bar and depress the noeaeee same when the topmost drawer is pushed` back into place, and means for locking said plate bothin the herein described position and also in a position wherein it has been swung' to one side for avoiding said bar and thereby leaving` the lower drawers unlocked.
2. A ease having a plurality of drawers slidable therein, in combination with va vertical slidable bar resiliently supporte and having yvertical slots Corresponding to said drawers, hooks pivotally carried by said drawers and resilienl'ly pressed upward into engagement `with the upper ends of said slots, a slotted plate being provided for each hook, and each hook having a luv* adapted by engagement with its associated plate to keep the hook from rising too high to enter its slot, and a detent pivoted to each plate above its hook for locking the latter out of engagement with its slot.
In testimony that l claim the foregoing invention, l have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of May, 1912.
/ JOHN V. SWANSON.
