CLOSET.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELIHU M. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hugoton, in the county of Stevens and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Closet, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to closets, and more particularly to that class which cannot be connected to a sewer, but must rely on a dry pit, a pan or tray; and to also make the closet fly-proof.

An object of the invention is to provide an inexpensive closet, simple, rigid and durable in construction,whereby the opening to the vault is automatically closed when not in use.

A further object of the invention is to provide a ventilating flue to the vault, for the escapement of obnoxious gases, the same to be screened fly-proof.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section, of an embodiment of my device, showing the same when not in use; Fig. 2 is an elevated cross section of the device when in use; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the device in use.

Before proceeding to a more detailed description of my invention, it must be understood that the form or shape of the closet can be varied in accordance with individual preference and special conditions; that the means for the automatic operation of the seat may also vary, as, for example, a spring in place of the weight may be used; also the screen may be placed in any desired place in the flue, without departing from the underlying spirit of the invention.

provided with a seat 3 hinged to the top of the closet by means of hinges 4, 4. On the inner surface of the closet seat 3, flanges 5, 5 and 6 are attached, which form, when closed against the baflle 7, a fly-proof blind for the closet. On the outer surface of the seat 3, near the rear thereof, is attached a crank arm 8 with an appendant weight 9 to operate the seat. Through the top of the closet is passed a ventilating flue 10, which flue is provided with a fine fabric 11, forining a fly-screen to cut off the passage of flies. It will be easily seen that the seat 3 of the closet 2 is automatically closed by the weight 9, when the closet is not in use, whereby the aperture is closed by the contact of flanges 6 against the baffle plate 7. The fly-screen 11 in the flue 10, for the foul gases, makes the closet very sanitary, as it is well known that flies are the worst of disease breeders.

The vat formed by flanges 5, 5 and 6 with the baffle plate 7 at a time when the seat 8 is elevated, makes a convenient urinal for male use.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. In a closet of the character described, a casing having on its inner face at the front a downwardly and inwardly inclined plate, and an apertured seat hinged to the casing and having on its under side a closure or the casing when the seat is in its normal raised position, said closure comprising downwardly extending side members having curved edges and a downwardly and rearwardly inclined rear member secured to the side members and engaging the inclined plate of the casing when the seat is raised.

2. In a closet of the character described, a casing, and apertured and hinged seat, and means for holding the seat normally raised, said seat being provided on its under side with depending and connected side and rear flanges forming a closure for the casing, when the seat is raised by their engagement with the front of the casing.
