WALTER KIESER, 0F CHARLOTTENBU-RG, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR T GENERAL ELECTRIC i COMPANY, A CORPORATION 0F NEW YORK.
l To ull-.whom it may concern Beit known that I, WALTER Kieser, a citizen of Switzerland, residingv at Charlottenburg, Germany, havey invented certain new and useful Improvements in Regulat-` sudden variations, so that the admission-` valye is not subjected on theone hand vto too I. frequent movements or onthe other hand to violent movements. e
The invention is illustrated diagrammatically .in the accompanying drawing.
The admission valve 1 controls the flow of steam through the main 2 to the engine or turbine in the direction of the arrow. From a region between the valve and the turbine a pipe 3 leads to one side of a power pistpn or other movable abutment et, the opposite side of which is exposed t'o atmospheric pressure. A spring 5 augments said atmospheric pressure and biases the piston to the right in the drawing. In line with the cylinder G in which .the piston. works is a fluid brake, comprising a piston 7 working in a cylinder S, whose ends are connected by a passage 9 regulated by a bypass valve 10, whereby the iiow of fluid from one end of the cylinder to the other can be more or less retarded as desired, and thel movement of the4 piston 7 correspondingly controlled. The piston rod 11 passes out at each end of the cylinderl S, and at one lend is attached,
to a spring l2 which is also connected to the rod 13 extending from the piston 4. AThe other end of the rod 11 enters a 4cylinder 14 where it is attached to'a slide valve 15 which controls the flow of hydraulic pressure entering said cylinder, through a pipe 16-and exhausting through the pipe 17. A duct 18 connects the ,two ends of this cylinder, and
at the' end Yopposite that through which the rod 111 enters a pipe 19 leads to a cylinder 20, which it enters above a .piston 21. A spring 22 urges this piston upward, in opposition to the hydraulic pressure supplied Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 7, 1912. Serial No. 676,948.

through the pipe 19. The rod 23 of this' piston is connected to the valve 1.
A speed-responsive device 24 controls a pilot valve 25 which regulates the supply of Huid pressure to the'upper end ot theI cylinder 20., above a piston 26 adapted to abut upon the piston 21 and actuate thev same under certain conditions. kA rod 2'7 connects the piston 26 with the floating lever a follow-np device ot well known character..
The method of operation is as, follows The smaller movements of the piston f1 due to small variations in the steam pressure, 7
are taken up by the springs and 12, and the suddenly occurring impacts are absorbed by the Huid brake, so that only the average of the pressure variations occurring in the chamber 29 above the admission valve is transmitted to the valve-actuating piston21. F or example, if the steam pressure in. the chamber 29 increases by a certain definite amount, then the power piston l is shifted against the tension of the 'spring 5 and this movement is transmitted through the fluid brake to the slide valve 15, which admits hydraulic pressure to the duct 18 and pipe 19 and so to the space between the pistons 21 and 26. The result is that the piston 2l is forced downwardly against the tension of the spring. 22, and the valve'l is partially closed to decrease the amount of steam admitted to the turbine, and thus prevents the increased steam pressure lfrom augmenting thc speed of the turbine. The pressure in the chamber 29 is alsodecreased by this par tial closing or' the valve. 1, so that the spring 5 is enabled to return the piston t to its normal position, pulling with it the slide Valve 15 and shutting olf the hydraulic pressure from the cylinder 20. A. similar action Iof these parts occurs, in the opposite direcv t/ion, of course, when the steam pressure in Any serious variation in the speed of `the turbine acts to Vary the posit-ion of the valve 1 through the speed responsive vdevice 24, the pilot, valve 25% and the upper piston 26 in the cylinder 20, which upon being forced 105 down by the fluid pressure above it forces down in turn the piston 21 and thus tends to close the admission valve.
This lnvention 1s especially applicablel to 'turbines driven by exhaust steam from'bther 11C engines orlapparatus, but it maybe of servsteam .pressure in a region between the adi 10e-also' 1n connection -Wlth llve steam `ruam1ss1onvalve and the engine,v and connecchines Where variable pressures are en- .tions between.
