Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed July 3, 1912. Serial No. 707,453.
' having the front side thereof provided with pads to give fullness to the bust.
One of the objects is to provide a light, sanitary bust girdle of open lace work or netting which is cool and self-Ventilating and adapted to be fitted closely to the form and at the same time to give more or less fullness to the bust.
Another object is to provide the front portions of the girdle with separate pockets for the reception of the pads or filling having self-closing open sides through which such filling may be inserted and removed at will, thuspermitting the entire girdle and fillings to be thoroughly washed and laundried when desired.
Other objects and uses relating to specific parts of the girdle will be'brought out in the following description:
In the drawings Figure 1 isa perspective view of the girdle. Fig. 2y is an enlarged horizontal sectional view through one of the padded pockets and adjacent portions of the girdle taken on line 2 2, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is an enlarged end face view of the open end of one of the pockets, partly in section, taken on line 3 3, Fig. l. Fig. 4 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view through the rear laced ends of the girdle taken on line 4 4, Fig. l.
This girdle preferably comprises opposite similar half sections 1 detachably united at their front ends by suitable fastening means as hooks and eyes 9f and having their rear ends adjustably connected by suitable lacing 3 each half section being provided with a shoulder strap 4 l having its ends attached to the upper edges of the front and rear portions thereof and its intermediate portions looped and adapted to be brought over and upon the shou1 ders to support the girdle in proper position around the bust.
The main bodies of the sections 1 are preferably made of open lace work or netting 5 l having their rear portions relatively narrow vertically but of substantially the same width and their front portions at opposite sides of the center somewhat enlarged or broadened vertically and provided Vwith separable double layers of the lace work or netting 5 to form suitable pockets 6 for the reception of pads or fillings 7 preferably of thesame material so as to reduce the weight and render these portions of the girdle cool and self- Ventilating.
The upper and lower marginal edgesk of the girdle sections 1 are finished'with A relatively narrow bindings 8 of somewhat stronger fabric than the lace work so as to give the girdle the desired form and allow it to be drawn tightly around the body without liability of stretching or deforming the main body l In like manner the front meeting ends of the girdle sections' 1 are provided with relatively narrow binding strips 9 of the same material as the bindings 8 and. to which the hooks and eyes Q are securely attached.
The rear meeting ends of the girdle sections 1 are also provided with binding strips 10 of the same material as the binding strips 8 to which are attached loops ll of similar material through which the lacing 3 is drawn, said binding strips 10 also forming hems for receiving vertical stays 12 of whale bone or equivalent material' to give the desired stiffness and form to this portion of the girdle at the center of the back.
For a similar purpose the portions of the girdle at the rear ends of the pockets 6 and also the central portions of the front sides of the pockets are provided with vertical binding pieces 13 and l4 for receiving vertical stays 15 and 16 which preserve the predetermined form of the marginal edges of the girdle7 the binding strips 14 and stays l6 being located substantially midway between the vertical binding strips 9 and l3 The rear ends of the inner sides of the pockets 6 are provided with separate vertical bindings 17 preferably of the same material asthe bindings 1B-,having their ends Vattached to the adjacent portions of the lowerand upper bindings 8 and their intermediate portions separated therefrom to form an opening 18 into the pocket -6- through which the fillings --7- may be inserted and removed.
Stays -19- of Whale bone or equivalent material are also inserted in the bindings -17- and serve to automatically close the openings -l8Q-by their own tension.
The fillings 7 are loosely inserted within their respective pockets -6- between the inner and outer sides -5- thereof and when made of open lace Work or netting may be crumpled or folded to give the desired fullness without adding materially to the Weight of the girdle or interfering with free ventilation therethrough, said fillings being removed When necessary through the openings -18- to permit the parts of ghe dentire girdle to be Washed and launlWhat Ix claim is:
A bust girdle composed of opposite half sections arranged end to end, means for connecting them at both their rear and front ends, a pocket formed on each of said sec tions by attaching thereto a piece of material upon three of itsfsides, a iexible strip of material of substantially equal length with the Width of said pockets attached to the free side of said pieces of material attached to form said pockets, and adapted to hold said pockets in closed position.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand on this 26th day of June 1912.
