To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JosnrH S. IsiDoR, a citizen of the United States, residing at "Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Frame Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such asl will enable others skilled in the art to which it :appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates, generally, to improvements in hinges for bag-frames, and the like; and, the present invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel stayhinge for bag-frames, and the like, and for use more especially with that class of bagframe, known in the art as sewed-in bagframe.

The present invention has for its principal object to provide a novel and simplyconstructed hinge which is especially adapted for use in pivotally connecting the ends of the frame-sections of bag-frames, comprising tw-o hinge-plates or members, one of which is formed with integral pintleelements or studs adapted to be pivotally connected with pivot-ears or lugs with which the other hinge-plate or member is provided, all with a view of doing away with the drilling of holes in the pivot-ears and dispensing with the usual separate rivet-pins and the tedious and objectionable, aswell as more or less expensive, operation of upsetting and riveting over the ends of the rivet-pins for pivotally connecting the hinge-plates or members.

This invention has for its further object to provide a novel hinge in which one of the hinge-plates or members is provided with integrally formed hinge-lugs or ears; and, the invention has for 'its further purpose to provide a novel stay-hinge of the general character hereinafter more particularly set forth.

The invention also has for another object to provide a hinge or stay-hinge, which is of such a novel and simple construction so that the hinge-plates or members can be secured in their relative positions to the frame-sections of a bag-frame, with the parts of the" hinge-plates which are to be pivotally connected, left in their disconnected relations, whereby the bag-maker can more readily secure the body of the bag to the separate frame-sections, and when thus secured in place, the two frame-sections being adapted to be quickly and more easily, than heretofore, connected in their pivotal or hinged relation.

Other objects of the invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the present invention.

With the various objects of the present invention in view, the invention consists, primarily, in the novel hinge and the novel stay-hinge hereinafter set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts, as well as in the details of `the construction of the same, all of which will be more fully described in their detail in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claims which are appended to and which form an essential part of this specification.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the one endportion of a sewed-in bag-frame, and a plan view of a hinge connected with the ends of the frame-sections of the bag-frame for pivotally connecting the said frame-sections,

and the hinge-construction represented inv said figure, showing one embodiment of the principles of the present invention. Fig. 2 is a reverse View of the hinged or pivotally connected parts represented in said Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of the said parts, said section being taken on line 3-3 in said Fig. l, looking in the direction of the arrow x; Fig. 4 is an elevation of the same parts, also looking in the direction of saidarrow w in Fig. l; and Fig. 5 is' a collective perspective view of the members of the hinge, showing the hinge-plates of the hinge in theirseparated relation,prior to being assembled in a hinge-like manner, so as to provide the complete hinge. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the one end-portion of a bag-frame, and a stay-hinge connected with the frame-sections of the bag-frame, said view illustrating a slightly modified construction of hinge, but still embodying the principles of the present invention; Fig. 7 is 4an elevation of the parts represented in said Fig. 6, looking in the direction of the arrow,v`

Similar characters of reference are emlployed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.

Referring now to the said figures-of the drawings, the reference- characters 1 and 2 indicate the end-portions of the two frameseotions of any usual construction of bagframe, the frame represented in the accompanying drawings being of the sewed-in type, and the referencecharacter 3, employed in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, indicating one embodiment of hinge made according to the principles of the present invention, while in Figs. 6 to 9 inclusive, the reference-character 4 indicates a slightly modified form o-f hinge. The form of hinge represented in said Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, consists, essentially, of a pair of hinge-plates or members 5 and 6, both of which are provided with rivet-receiving holes or perforations 7 for the reception of rivets 8, by means o-f which the said hinge-plates or ,members are secured in their operative positions upon the endportions of the respective frame-sections, so as to connect them in a hinge-like manner, as will present-ly appear. As shown, the said hinge-plate or member 5 is made at its one end-portion with a suitably curved and upwardly extending part, as 9, preferably of the marginal configuration shown in Figs. 1 and 5 of the drawings. \At or near its free end, the said part 9 is formed with marginal .pintle-like members or lugs, as 10, all of said parts being integrally connected by being struck up by means of a suitable die, and being made from sheet-steel, or other suitable metal. The other hinge-plate or member 6 is formed upon its longitudinally extending marginal edges, at or near the one end of said plate, with a pair of upwardly extending hinge-lugs or ear-like elements, as 11, each element 11 being formed with a finger-like member 12, of suitable marginal configuration, said members 12 extending in vertical alinement above the marginal edge-portions 13 of said ear-like elements 11, thus providing along the marginal, edge-portions, near one end of the hinge.- plate 6, suitable pintle or lug-receiving openings 14, preferably provided with the rounded parts 15. When the said hingeplates or members 5 and 6 have been secured in their proper places upon the end-portions of the respective frame- sections 1 and 2, and it is desired to connect the said frame-sections in la hinge-like manner, the previously mentioned pintle -like members or lugs 1() are placed upon the marginal edgeportions 13 of the hinge-lugs or ears 11, and the pintle-like members or lugs 10 are passed into lug-receiving openings 14 until the rounded parts 15 are reached. By means of a hammer, or other suitable tool, the free end-portions 16 of the said finger-like members 12 are then forced from the positions indicated in Fig. 5 into their closed positions represented in Figs. 1, 3 and 4 of the drawings, whereby t-he assembled and pivotally connected hinge- plates 5 and 6 provide suitable hinges, for pivotally connecting the respective'end-portions of the two frame-sections of a bag-frame. The said hinge-lugs or ears 11 are also made so as to form integral part-s of the hinge-plate 6, and the latter and said hinge-lugs or ears 11 are struck up in a suitable die, being made from sheet-steel, or other suitable metal.

When t-he form of hinge, just described, is to be used as a stay-hinge, then the said hinge-plate 6 is provided in its lower surface with a laterally extending receiving depression or open part, as 1 and loetween the upper surface-portion 18 of the frame-section 1 and the lower surface of the hinge-plate 1, and secured between the said parts, by means of the rivets 8, is a springmember 19 having an upwardly extending part 20 which is suitably curved, as at 21,

and forms a holding member which is slid.- ably forced into holding or retaining engagement with the said recessed or open part 17 of the hinge-plate 2, when the parts are in their opened relation, and thereby acts as a stay7 to hold the frame-sections in their open relation, as will be clearly understood, and as more particularly illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings.

Referring now to the modified form of hinge represented in Figs. 6 to 9 inclusive, it will be seen that the hinge comprises a pair of hinge- plates 22 and 23 which are suitably secured to the respective frame- sections 1 and 2 by means of the rivets 24. The said hinge-plate 22 is made at its one end-portion with a suitably curved and up- .wardly extending part, as 25, similar in configuration to the part 9 of t-he hingeplate 5, the said part 25 being formed at its free end with marginal pintle-like members or lugs, as 26, similar to the herein-before mentioned lugs 10, but at its lateral extending marginal edge, the said part 25 is provided with a downwardly extendingspringengaging tongue or flange, as 27. All of the said parts of the said hinge-plate 22 are also made in one integral piece, being stamped up from sheet-steel, or other suitable metal. The other hinge-plate or member 23 is also formed upon its longitudinally extending r`marginal edges, at or near the one end of said plate with a pair of upwardly extending hinge-lugs or ear-like elements, as 28, similar to the hinge-lugs or ear-like elements l1, said lugs or element-s 28 being formed with finger-like members 29 of suitable marginal configuration, and which are bent, so as to provide suitable bearing-portions in which the said pintle-like lugs or members 26 are arranged and operate in the manner described in connection with the construction of hinge, illustrated in Figs. l to 5 inclusive. The marginal and upwardly extending parts of the said hingelugs or ear-like elements 28 are also provided with receiving recesses or cut-away portions, as 30, and resting within said receiving recesses or cut-away portions BO, are a pair of laterally extending marginal retaining lugs or projections, as 32, of a springplate 3l, which extends between thesaid marginal hinge-lugs or ear-like elements 28, and the end-portion of which curves upwardly, as at 33, and is in sliding holding engagement with the spring-engaging tongue or Bange 27 and the under surface of the. curved part 25 of the hinge-plate or member 22, substantially as illustrated in Fig. 8 of the drawings, so as to provide a suitable stay-hinge for holding the frame-sections of the bag-frame in their opened relation, as will be clearly understood from an inspection of Figs. 6, 7 and 8 of the drawings.

The operation and general arrangement of the parts of the hinge, when the framesections of the bag-frame are brought into their folded or closed relation, is clearly represented in Fig. 9 of the drawings, and will be understood from an inspection o-f said ligure.

Of course, I am aware that changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, without departing from the scope of the pres-ent invention, as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the clauses of the claims which are appended to the said specication. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations ofthe devices and parts as described in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

I claim l. A hinge for the frame-sections of a bag-frame, comprising a pair of hinge-l plates, one of said hinge-plates being provided with upwardly extending ear-like elements, each ear-like member being formed with a longitudinally extending finger-like member, normally in vertical alinement and parallel to the upper marginal edge of the ear-lilzeelement to provide a receiving opening, but adapted to have its end-portion bent downwardly upon said marginal edge-portion of the ear-like element, so as to provide a bearing-portion, and means connected with the other hinge-plate adapted to be brought into pivotal relation with said bearing-portions so as to connect the said hinge-plates in a hinge-like manner.

2.y A hinge for the frame-sections of a bag-frame, comprising a pair of hingeplates, one of said hinge-plates being provided wit-h upwardly extending ear-like elements, each ear-like member being fo'rmed with a longitudinally extending linger-like member, normally in vert-ical alinement and parallel to the upper marginal edge of the ear-like element to provide a receiving opening, but adapted to have its end-portion bent downwardly upon said marginal edge-portion of the ear-like element, so as to provide a bearing-portion, a curved and upwardly projecting part projecting from one endportion of the other hinge-plate, and extending over a portion of said first-mentioned hinge-plate and between the said earlike elements, and pintle-like members integrally connected .with and extending laterally from the marginal edge portion of said curved and upwardly projecting part adapted to be brought into pivotal relation with said bearing-portions so as to connect the said hinge-plates in a hinge-like manner.
