HAT-PIN G ARD.
150612 12, Specification of Letters Patent. I Patented [a'y 6, 1913',
Application filed August 13, 1912. Serial no. 714,939.
To all whom it may concern: g curely fastened, in a desired manner to the Be it known that I, JULIA ANDERSON, a. citizen of the United States, residing. at Superior, in the county of Douglas and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pin Guards, of
which the following is a specification.
An object of this invention is to provide a 'hat pin and a guard. or shield wh ch may be attachedthereto in such a manner as to cover the point and so afford protection therefrom.
-A further object resides in the peculiar form. of locking means employed in fastening the giiard to the pinfsaid guard being given a longitudinal movement after it is applied to the pin, to effect a locking cooperation between the two elements.
For a full understandingof the presentinvention, reference. is to be had to the following description and the accompanying i re 1 is a side elevationof the hat pin with the guard attached; Fig. 2 is a sec- 'present construction.
which the spring catch of the guard en-' gages; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the spring catch of the guard used. in the Throughout the following detail description and on the several figures of the drawings, similar parts are referred to by like' reference characters.
The hat pin 1 carr'es thehead 2 on one'ofv its terminalswhile the opposite terminal 3 is pointed. Adjacent the pointed terminal 3 the pin is provided with an elongated re cess 4. Access may be had with the recess 4 ,through the escape opening 5 and the re-' duced opening or slot 6 leadin from the escape opening. The function ot theso con-- -structed terminal is-to provide a suitable means in which the guard, to be described presently, may engage to retain the latter on the pin.
The guard .7, which is' preferably shaped to appear like the head 2, 1s provided in tlie upper portion, with a semi-spherical hollow portion 8 in which is housed a spring catch 9. One terminal 10 of this catch 9 is se- 12, provided iIi the wall of theguard 7, to afford a means for actuating the catch. Extending downwardly from the catch 9, and

The head 13 being larger than the slot 6, the spring catch 9 is locked against latter is moved further on the pinlwhereby 1 o x cess t through the escape opening 0 uponthat the pin will rest on the solid lower 'por whatis claimed as new is:
In a device as set forth comprising. a pin terminal thereof, said pin being provided with a slot and an escape opening communieatihg with the slot, a spring on said guard, anda locking member carried by said spring and adapted to enter [the escape opening upon-longitudinal movement of the guard over the piercing terminal and to interlockingly engage in the slot in the pin upon movement of said guard in the'opposite direction.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature n presence of two witnesses.

movement and the guard from displacement. When 1t 1s desired to remove the guard, the.
the head 13 may be retrieved from the reoperating the catch.9 by the protruding-ten minal 11. The opening 15 is so positi0ned-' tion 16 of the guard 7 which facilitat eslocle ing the latter on the pin. Furthermore, this-solid portion 16 serves to keep the guard pendent in a certain position on the pin l. 1
