DRINKING-FOUNTAIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 6,1913.
Application filed May 8, 1912. Serial No. 696,016.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK K. Cnoonronn, citizen of the United States, residing at Bristol, in the county of Bristol and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drinking- Fountains, of which the following is a spec-itication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to drinking fountains which are intended to be used by poultry, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a fountain in which a heat supply is mounted in the bottom of the fountain so that the water in the fountain will be prevented from freezing. It should also be noted that the heat from the heating deviceis lead through a perforated guide to the bottom of the liquid reservoir so that the water in the reservoir will also be prevented from freezing.
This invention comprises a novel arrangement of elements which are movably connected together so that the fountain may be easily taken apart and cleaned, so that the fountain will be very sanitary.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the fountain. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the fountain. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the fountain along the line 3 3 in Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a perspective view of the water receptacle. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the heating drum. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the heating lamp with the central portion broken away.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that this invention comprises the liquid receptacle which also forms a housing for the heating lamp 10 which is of the wick type. This liquid receptacle comprises the shell 11 having the slot 12 formed in its lower portion through which the stem 13 of the lamp protrudes so that the wick of the lamp may be adjusted. A bead 14 is formed intermediate in height of the shell, and forms a seat for the disk 15 which divides the receptacle into the upper and lower chambers 16 and 17, thus forming the lamp receiving chamber 17 and the water receptacle 16. This disk 15 is provided with a central opening 18, through which the lamp protrudes and a well 19 having a reduced upper end portion 20 forming the shoulder 21 which surrounds the opening 18 so that the water in the liquid receptacle 16 is prevented fro-m flowing into the lamp chamber. It should also be noted that open ings 22 are provided below the bead 1. 1, so that the necessary draft for the lamp will be provided.
The heating drum 23 which is of the same shape as the water receptacle, is fitted upon the water receptacle and rests upon the head 14, and is provided with the openings 24 through which the chickens may obtain access to the water in the water receptacle. The upper end 25 of the heating drum is reduced to form a ledge 26 which forms a support, the purpose of which will be brought out hereinafter. A handle 27 has its ends connected with eyes 28, and has its central portion bent to form an eye 29 by means of which the receptacle may be easily carried or hung up in a shed when not in use,
The water reservoir 30 carries a collar 31 which surrounds the reduced upper end portion 25 of the heating drum and rests upon the supporting ledge 26. It should be noted that the inner portion of the water reservoir is in spaced relation to the sides of the heating drum so that heat-ed air may accumulate in the space between the upper edges of the openings 24 and the collar 31, thus causing the inner portion of the water reservoir to be completely'surrounded by heated air. A wire mesh conductor 32 is carried by the water reservoir and has its lower end surrounding the reduced upper end portion 20 of the well 19 and resting upon the shoulder 21. This conductor forms a perforated cylinder which leads the flame from the lamp up to the bottom of the reservoir there being a known principle that flame will not of itself pass through a wire mesh. Therefore, the flame is lead directly to the reservoir and the heat is applied directly to the reservoir and passes through the opening 24:. A pipe 33 which is provided with a conical valve 34: leads from the bottom of the reservoir to a point below the water level in the water receptacle. Itwill thus be evident that the valve may be left open as indicated in Fig. 2 and the water will of itself feed into the water receptacle thus keeping the water receptacle constantly filled with water.
It will thus be seen that there has been provided a fountain in which the Water in the Water receptacle is prevented from freezing since the lamp is mounted directly beneath the water receptacle and the burner of the lamp is surrounded by the water and that the reservoir is also located directly above the heating lamp and, therefore, the water in the reservoir will also be prevented from freezing.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A fountain comprising a heating memher, a liquid receptacle carried by said heating memberqand provided with a passageway communicating with said heating member, a heating drum carried by said liquid receptacle and inclosing the same, a liquid reservoir carried by said heating drum, and a fabric conductor leading from said passageway to said reservoir.
2. A fountain comprising a heating memher, a liquid receptacle carried by said heating member and provided with a well through which a portion of said. heating member passes, a heating drum carried by said liquid receptacle and inclosing the same, a liquid reservoir carried by said heating drum, and a fabric conductor leading from said Well to saidreservoir.
3. A fountain comprising a heating member, a liquid receptacle carried by said heating member, a heating drum carried by said liquid receptacle and provided with side openings through which access may be had to said liquid receptacle, said liquid receptacle being provided with a well through which heated air may pass into said heating drum, a liquid reservoir carried by said heating drum, and a fabric conductor lead ing from said well to said reservoir.
4. A fountain comprising a heating member, a liquid receptacle carried by said heating member 'and provided with a well through which heated air may pass through said liquid receptacle, a heating drum carried by said liquid receptacle and inclosing the same, a liquid reservoir supported within said drum, and a fabric wall leading from said reservoir and inclosing the mouth of said well.
5. A fountain comprising a heating men1- her, a liquid receptacle carried by said heat ing member, a heating drum carried by said liquid receptacle and incl'osing the same, liquid reservoir carried by said drum, a fabric conductor leading from said heating member to said reservoir, and a feed pipe leading from said reservoir through said drum and into said liquid receptacle to a point below the normal level of the liquid contained therein.
6. A. fountain comprising a heating memher, a liquid receptacle carried by said heating member, said liquid receptacle comprising a body portion having an opening in the bottom thereof, a collar carried by said body portion and surrounding said heating member, a collar mounted upon the bottom of said liquid receptacle and surrounding the opening formed therein, a heating drum carried by said liquid receptacle and inclosing the same, a liquid reservoir carried by said heating drum, and a fabric conductor leading from said last mentioned collar to said reservoir.
7. A fountain comprising a heating memher, a liquid receptacle carried by said heating member and provided with a central well through which heated air may pass, an open-ended heating drum carried by said liquid receptacle, a liquid reservoir, a collar carried by said reservoir and engaging the upper portion of said drum to suspend said reservoir in said drum and close the upper end thereof, and a fabric conductor carried by said reservoir and leading to said well with its lower end surrounding the same.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK K. CROCKFORD.
