MECHANISM FOR DISPLAYING ADVERTISEMENTS OR OTHER INFORMATION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 22, 1913.
Application filed June 3, 1911. Serial No. 631,102.
To all whom, it may concern Be it known that I, HERMAN TAS, a subject of Her Majesty the Queen of Holland, residing at Albion House, 59/61 New Oxford street, in the county of London, Kingdom of England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanism for Displaying Advertisements or other Information, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improved apparatus for displaying advertisements or other information of the type in which a. plurality of advertising or like sheets are slidably mounted side by side in a movable container within an outer casing, so that any one of the sheets can be raised to view before a window in the casing upon the operation of a rotatable selector disk or indicator; the depression of the spindle of which serves to lock the selecting device and to raise the se lected sheet to view. Apparatus of this type is described in the specification of U. S. ap-
plication No. 608,427.
Now the present invention consists in certain details of construction whereby the whole machine is rendered more serviceable and reliable in operation and especially capable of resisting the rough usage such machines receive when erected inpublic places.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a sectional front elevation of the machine; Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation; Fig. 3 is a sectional plan, on the lines 33 and M, Fig. 2; Figs. 4:, 5, 6 and 7 are detail views of the lifting members.
As shown I employ a plurality of sheets a carrying the advertising matter to be displayed. These are arranged to slide in grooves in a sliding container 6 that is operated in the known manner by suitable wire mechanism 0 connected with the operating handle (Z and wheel 6 to bring any one of the sheets a into engagement with the pair of lifting members f These members f are according to the present invention of channel section and each carry a thin lifting finger 9 adapted to engage an inverted U piece it on the top edge of each frame a. The members f slide on a pair of spaced vertical guide rods i and are held togetherby means of a horizontal rod y. Their movement is controlled by means of a pair of endless chains Zc that are connected thereto and pass over guide pulleys Z sprocket wheels m and other guide pulleys n. The sprocket wheels m are fixed at each end of a shaft 0 which is rotated by means of an endless chain 7) which turns a sprocket wheel Q on said shaft 0 and passes over guide pulleys r, s, t and a, being connected to the extremity 7 of the lever 12. This lever 11 is operated upon the depression of the handle (Z and its shaft to by means of a trunnion collar w thereon while its other slotted end is guided on a fixed pin or stud y. In order to prevent the violent operation of the machine, I provide a plunger 2 on the end of the rod 10 which slides in a dashpot 1, fixed to the frame of the machine so as to control the movement of the mechanism. I also provide a notched wheel or disk 6 and a verticallly fixed projection 2, for engaging therewit 1.
Another very important feature is the provision of means for preventing the sheets from being shaken off the fingers g. This is accomplished by means of pivotally mounted members 3, journaled on the slides 7 about the rod j. These members are normally in the position shown in Figs. 4 and 5, when the slides are down, being raised by the pins 4, engaging with the arms, 5, but when they are raised they fall 'by gravity and come against the stops 6, and bring the surface 3 into position above the U pieces h and prevent their disengagement with the fingers 9 until they are again lowered. Thus when the slides f are down, the parts 3 are raised and the U-pieces h are free to move into the space between the fingers g and the parts 3.
By making the projections on the sheets U shaped and the finger piece 9 single instead of the reverse as heretofore I am enabled to put the sheets closer together to decrease the width of the container 5 and consequently the size of the whole machine.
WVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. Apparatus for displaying advertisements or other information comprising a windowed casing, a plurality of sheets therein, a movable container in which the said sheets are slidably mounted side by side, inverted U-shaped lugs on said sheets, means for raising any one of said sheets for inspection before said window comprising a pair of vertically movable fingers adapted to engage said inverted U shaped lugs, and means for preventing the disengagement of the sheets therefrom when the slides are raised and for releasing same when lowered.
2. Apparatus for displaying advertisements or other information comprising a windowed casing, a plurality of sheets therein a movable container in which the said sheets are slidably mounted side by side, means for raising any one of said sheets for inspection before said window, a rotatable and axially movable shaft, a notched selector wheel mounted on said shaft, a vertical arm projecting from the frame of the machine for engagement with the notches in said selector wheel for preventing its angular movement while depressed, and means for transmitting the axial movement of the said rotatable and axially movable shaft to the sheet raising devices. and the rotary movement to the container.
3. Apparatus for displaying advertisements or other information, comprising a windowed casing, a plurality of sheets therein having inverted U-shaped lugs, a movable container in which the said sheets are slidably mounted side by side, a rotatable and axially-movable shaft, adapted when rotated for moving said container into position, notched selector-wheel on said-shaft, an operating-knob for the selector-wheel, means actuated by said shaft when moved axially for raising any one of said sheets for inspection before said window comprising a pair of vertically-movable fingers adapted to engage said U-shaped lugs on the sheets, and means for preventing the disengagement of the sheets therefrom when the slides are raised and for releasing the same when lowered.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses the twenty-second day of May HERMAN TAS. Witnesses J. S. WITHERS, T. BLAKEY.
