DETAGHABLE BUTTON.
Specification 'of Letters Patent.

Application filed August 27, 1912. Serial No. 717,390.
useful Improvements in Detachable But-.
tons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in separable buttons, or to buttons adapted to be attached to garments without the use of thread or like fastening means, and which may be readily attached or detached without destroying any of the parts.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features which will be hereinafter first fully described and then more particularly pointed out in the claims following the description.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
igure 1 is a side elevation of the improved device applied with the garment in section; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the 25 base portion of the improved device; Fig. 3
is a perspective view of the garment engaging tongue detached; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the locking tongue detached;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the outer or 30 head portion of the improved device. Fig.
6 is a view similar to Fig. 1, illustrating a modification in the construction.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indi- 35 cated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.
The improved device comprises a base member 10 which is preferably in dish form, as shown, and provided with a central aperture 11 and a margin recess 12. At its inner end the recess is provided with lateral sockets 13 opening into the hollow inner face of .the base. Pivoted at 14 to the base 10 at the side opposite to the recess 12 is a combined latching and holding plate 16 having a notch 16 somewhat smaller than the opening 11 of the base plate. A locking bar 17 forms a part of the improved device and is designed to be received at one end within the recess 12 and is provided with lateral lugs 18 which enter the sockets 13. The bar 17 is bent upon itself at one end where it enters the recess 12 and is provided with inwardly directed prongs 19. The latch member 16 is designed to pass at its free end over the studs 18 when in its inward position and thus lock the bar 17 in position relative to the base. The base member 10 is designed to bear against the outer face of the garment to which the device is to be applied wlth the bar 17 extending over the upper end of the garment and with the prongs 19 inserted into the material of the garment and clenched through the same. By this slmple means, the member 10 together with its member 17 may be quickly attached to the garment where the button device is to be applied, and does not, therefore, disfigure the garment or require the cutting of apertures therein.
The outer head portion of the improved device comprises a disk 20, preferably in button-like form, and is provided with a relatively large stock 21 having .a reduced portion 22 and a terminal 23 larger than the reduced portion but smaller than the stock 21. The larger portion 23 of the shank 22 corresponds closely to the diameter of the aperture 11 of the member 10, while the smaller portion 22 of the shank corresponds to the notch 16 of the latch 15. By this means it will be seen that when the barbed portion 27 of the shank is inserted through the aperture 11 the latch 16 will be displaced by the terminal 23 and the latter returned to its position, and that the notch will be enga ed around the smaller portion of the shan thus locking the member 20 firmly to the member 10. By this simple means, it will be obvious that the button may be readily attached to the garment and will serve the ordinary purpose of a button without the necessity for perforating the garment or employing threads or other similar fastening means.
The improved device is simple in construction can be manufactured in varying sizes with the head portion formed of any suitable ornamental design or made to resemble ordinary buttons if preferred.
The improved device may be constructed of any suitable material and the member 10 with its attachments will preferably be of metal, while the head material may be also of metal, or other materials if preferred.
The latch member 16 will be held with suflicient grip to prevent accidental displacement in event of the displacement of the holding member 17.
In Fig. 6 is shown the means of employing the improved device upon cloaks, overcoats, and like garments consisting in dispensing with the' member 17 and depending upon t e friction of the tongue 16 only to hold the parts 10 and 20 in position. When the modified arrangement is em loyed the members '10 and 20 are disposed upon opposite sides of the garment material and the portion 2223 of the stud arranged to operate through the arment mater al, and the member 10 locate against the inner side of the garment.
Havin thus described the invention, what I c aim is:
1. A separable button comprising a perforated base member, garment attaching means mounted to swing upon the base at one side thereof, a latch member having a notch and pivoted to the base member at its rear side and extending when in lockin' position at one end over the portion of the arment attachin means which engages the ase, and a hea member havin a shank formed with an enlarged termina for passing through the aperture of the base and engaged by the notch of the latch in said locking position.
2. A separable button comprising a perforated base member having a recess in one edge, a garment engaging member mounted to swing at one end 1n said recess, a latch member having a notch and pivoted to the base member at its rear side and extendin when in locking position over the portion 0,
the garment engaging member which is supported in the recess, and a button member having a shank formed with an enlarged terminal and passing through the aperture of the base and engaged by the notch of the latch in said locking position.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
