WILLIAM.E. SCHWARTZ, OF WEST BURLINGTON, IOWA.
KNIFE-SEABPENEB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 22, 1913..
Application filed January 8, 1912. 8erla1No. 870,054.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. SoHwAnTz, a. citizen of the United States, residing at West Burlington, in the county of Des Moines, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife- Sharpeners; and 11 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de-. scription of theinvention, such as Wlll en. able others skilled in the art to which it ap-i pertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to knife sharpeners, and has for an ob ect to provide a one-piece holder for opposing sharpening elements,
With the above object in view the inven tion consists of certain novel details of con: struction and combination of parts herein-.
after fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications ,may
be made in the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying rawing forming part of this specifications-Figure 1 is a cross sectional view through the device.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device with a knife applied thereto in position for sharp ening. ig. 3 is aldetail perspective viewpf the holder.
Referring now to the drawing: in which like characters of reference designate similar arts, 10 designates a' base which may be ormed of any desired material. Mounted upon the base is aholder designated in gen-.
eral b5 the numeral 11, this holder being forme from a single sheet of spring metal, and comprising two sides Hand 13 which are connected by a bottom 14, the sides .in-.
when a knife blade is interposed between:
clining outwardl from: the bottom. The end e ges' of bot sides arebent inwardly andzform clamping lips 15 between which a carborundum or similar sharpening element 16 is confined Securing screws 17 are passed throu h the outer .ends of the bottom and into t e base.
It will be noted and it is deemed of importance that the bottom of the holder forms a support for both sharpeningelements, the latter gravitating freely into contact with the bottom upon insertion between the lips of the sides. In this manner the sides are relieved of all tension except when a knife blade is interposed between the opposing sharpening elements, whereupon the sides yield outwardl to ermit of the reception of the knife b ade etween the sharpening elements.
A .holder of the class described maybe simply. and inexpensively formed, and furthermore by virtue of the arts being relieved of all strain when the evice is not in use, the long life and utility of the article is greatly promoted.
What is claimed, is
A tool shar ener including a a holder formed from a single oblong blank of spring sheet metal and including a flat bottom, spaced straight upright sides divergin from said bottom, the end edges of said sides being bent inwardly at substantially rightangles to the sides and forming retaining flanges, the ends ofsaid bottom extending beyond said flanges and being provided with attaching means, and divergent sharpening 80 plates bearing upon said bottom and held in position by said flanges.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signaw ture, in presence of twowitness'es.
WILLIAM !E. SCHWARTZ.
