UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANA H. BENJAMIN, 0F CLEVELAND, OHIO.
GARMENT.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANA H. BENJAMIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in garments generally and particularly to boys blouse waists.
More specifically the invention relates to the draw-string arrangement at the lower edge of the waist for producing the blouse effect.
The invention may be further briefly summarized as consisting in the construc tion and combination of features hereinafter set forth in the following description, drawings and claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the waist; Fig. 2 is a detail view of a portion of the front left side, as shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a portion on the opposite corner; and Fig. 4 is a detail view, showing the position which the loop assumes when the waist is spread to its fullest extent.
In carrying out the invention any preferred form and construction of waist may be arranged according to the teachings of the invention, but I have shown one form in the drawings which is in accordance with the invention, and in such embodiment 1 represents v the waist provided at its lower edge with a hollow hem 2 forming an opening 3 for the draw-string a which is made in the form of a loop having the ends of the tape secured to one edge of the garment at the end of the hem as at 5 in Fig. 3. The opposite portion of the loop or the end of the loop passes out freely through the open end of the hem at the opposite edge of the garment, as shown in Fig. 2, and the edges of the garment at the hem are stitched together by stitches or by any other suitable fastening means 6 between the parts of the loop, as shown in Fig. 4, whereby the end of the loop is prevented from pulling into the hem and at the same time when the loop is pulled out and the waist is drawn up in the usual manner to tighten it around the waist of the wearer, a knot may be tied in the loop Specification of Letters Patent.

in any suitable manner and the proper adjustment will be maintained, since the loop will be shortened, as it were, and the knot will pull against the fastening 6. When the waist is spread at the bottom to its fullest extent, the end of the loop is drawn in so that part touches the fastening 6. In this way there is no free loop extending beyond the parts of the waist during the laundrying operation, and at the same time the string is visible to the wearer and is freely accessible in the adjustment of the waist.
By the use of the loop pulling out of the end of the hem the user exerts a pull on the tape in a line with the hem and at the same time by forming a knot in the double tape outsideof the hem the adjustment-is maintained by the knot engaging the stitches which pass between the portions of the loop so that additional securing means for the draw tape is done away with.
It is quite obvious that in place of making a complete loop with both ends secured under the margin of the waist at the front and center, a single tape may be secured at this point and may be provided with a free loop at the opposite end long enough to give the maximum adjustment.
Having described my lnvention, I cla1m:
1. An open front garment comprising a body portion, a hollow hem extending entirely around its lower edge, said hem being open on one of the edges of the garment at the front thereof, a draw tape within the hollow hem and having one end secured at the closed end of the hem and at its opposite end having a loop, the combined length of said tape and loop from end to end being substantially equal to the length of the hem, and means secured in the sides of and at the open end of the hem and passing between sponding in length to the length of the un- In testimony whereof I aflix my signature Shirred hem. 1whereby the loop will not proin presence of two Witnesses.
trudebeyonc the hem, and suitable stitoh- I ing extending through the sides of the hem DANA BENJAMIN at the open end between the portions of the Vitnesses: loop to provide a holding means to prevent G. O. FARQUHARSON, the loop from being pulled Within the hem. C. H. TRASCH.
