specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 1 1, 1913.
Application filed January 31, 1912. Serial No. 674,493.
To aZZ whom, t may concern Be it known that we, Louis FINKFI. and AARON YoLIN, subjects of the Czar of Russia, and resident-s of New York city, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Signs, of which the following is a specification.
The object of our invention is to provide a sign having changeable indicators, and has particular reference to signs to indicate apartments or rooms to let in buildings and the like.
In carrying out our invention we provide a suitable frame or casing having opposed openings, with movable indicators adapted to aline with said openings, said indicators having suitable numerals or other inscriptions to appear through said openings. We also provi e means for lookin such indicators in set position in line with said openings. V
Our invention comprises novel details ot improvement and combinations of parts that will be more fully hereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein, Figure 1 is a face view of a sign embodying our invention; Fig. 2 is a similar view of part thereof, plate 1 being removed; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section oni-'the line 3, 3. in Fig. e.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
The numerals 1, 2, indicate plates fastened together as by screws 3. said plates being of any suitable outline. In the example illustrated we provide a space or chamber 4 between the plates 1, 2, by means of a 'rim 2s shown on plate 2 against which -rim plate 1 tits (see Fig. 3l. The plates 1, 2, are respectively provided with openings a, b, opposed t0 each other respectively, as shown in Fig. 3, so that indicators 5. 6, between plates 1. 2, may appear through said openings. The indicators we have shown comprise movable members 5a. 6. pivotally supported upon plate 2 by pins 7 7 Members 5, 6 are provided with numerals' e, c', d, d respectively on opposite sides to appear through openings a. b. The members 5, 6", are 4"shown provided at their lower ends with suitable recesses 5", 6 adapted to be operated bv a key 8 that may be passed through key holes 9 in plates 1 and 2, whereby when 2, whereby said tumblers may slide an retained 1n proper positions.
said key is rotated in the key hole the member 5 or 6 may be rocked. To lock said members in proper position so that their numerals c, c', d, d may appear through the openings a, Z), respectively, we provide tum.
blers or plates 10 shown having slots 10, receiving the pins 7 7 respectively, whereby said tumblers are guided. Said tumblers also .have slots 10 receiving pins 11 on late are ends 10c ot the tumblers are ada ted to be engaged by the key. Said tum lers also have openings 10d that have lugs 10 providing recesses 10', 10E, adapted to receive pins 12 on members 5, 6. The tumblers 10 are provided with springs 14 adapted to bear upon shoulders 15 of members 5, 6. The tumblers 10 are provided with springs 14 adapted to bear upon shoulders 15 on members 5, 6 respectively, servino to maintain the tumblerspressed downwardly'.
The arrangement of the parts is such that when member 5 and corresponding tumbler 10 are in the i'iositions shown in Fig. 2-one of the numerals as c' on opposite sides of said member will be maintained in line with the corresponding,r openings a, b, and when it is desired to change a number the key is inserted in the key-hole and turnen in the appropriate direction, as te the left in Fig. 2, whereby the tang of the'key by entering slot 5b will bear upon the edge 10 of tumbler 10 raising such tumbler so that its pin 12 may pass beneath the lug 10", and also engaging the portion 16 of member 5, thus rocking said member to present the numerals e on opposite sides in line with the openings a, b, and then the tumbler wili-be released and its spring` will cause it to descend so that the recess 1()g will receive the pin l2 and lock the parts together. Such position of tumbler 10 is represented by the dotted lines in Fig. 2,
such tumbler being removed for the purpose ation of the kev is reversed. Any desired The lower number of indicating members and ftheir tumblers may ,be provided with the correspending key holes according to the requirements of the sign. y
Our improved sign is particularly adapted foruse at the front of apartment houses and the like, for indicating the number of rooms in apartments that are to let, for instance, as illustrated in 1, if the apartments to let have four rooms onlythen the ap ropriate `indicating member, such as 5, Wiii be moved to indicate the numeral 4f as shown at c', and the indicator member 6a will be moved so that its zeros ai" will appear through .the corresponding openings a, b, and so on according to the number of rooms that are in vapartments that are to let.
Changes may be made in the details of arrangement set forth, Within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit of our invention.
Having now described our invention what We claim is v y A sign comprising a pair of spaced plates, one of said plates having display openings, indicating members pivotally supported between the plates, a pivot pin supporting the lower portion of the respective indicating members, tumblers slidable on said pins and operating in conjunction with the indicating members to lock the same in their adjusted positions, each of the tumblers having a slot l1n the upper portion thereof, pins on one of the plates adapted to engage the Walls of the ing the upper portion of the tumblers, spring members, one
end of the respective spring members beingsecured to the upper edge of the respective tumblcrs, and the free end of each spring member adapted to engage the respective indicating members to force said ltumblers into locking position, and a key adapted to engage the lower portion of the respective tumblers and indicating members for actuating the same.
