WALL-BED'.
Specification of Letters Patent.
applimon mea August 1o,4 1912. serial No..714,ss2.
To all whom'z't may concern: v
Be it known that I, WALDON S. BALL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have'invented new and useful Improvements in Tall-Beds, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to wall beds.
The object of the invention is to provide a portable wall bed construction which can be assembled -in the factory, later to be .set either in a wall recess, hung on a. revolving panel, or simpl stoodagainst the wallto be used as a fo ding bed. v V
There are other objects and advantages which will be apparent hereinafter.
The invention v.consists of the parts and the .combination and construction ofparts as hereniafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, inwhich* Figure 11s a side elevation with bed down in full lines and folded in dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a detail end elevation. Fi 3 is a detail 'vertical section on line 4X, Fig. 2. f
The invention comprises essentially a pair of vertical standards A, suitably supported a distance apartapproximately equal to the width of the bed 2. Each standard has a pair of, slots or guides 3 4; the slots 3 being disposed vertically at the lower front edge of t-he standards, while the slots 4 are arranged at a forward incline at the back and toward the top of thestandards.
The head end of the bed is provided with roller bearing side projections, or lugs, 5,. sliding up and down in the vertical slots 4,
and coperate with the underneath links 6 to support this end of the bed. The head- 4piece 7 has a hinged section 8, which latter 41s provided with laterally projecting lugs 9,
which operate in the incllned slots 4; the upper ends of the slots 4 terminating lapproximately in the plane of the vertical slots 3, so that when the bed is opened out for use, the head-piece is approximately vertical-and the space behind the head-piece concealed. In this position thebed has the appearance of an ordinary bedstead.
The lugs 5, 9 which run in'the respectlve slots 3, 4 are connected by springs 10, which latter act on compression as a counter-balofthe bed'. The vertical guide slots 3 insure the minimum amount of in and out movement of the bed, and therefore insure theloed being opera-ted in thesmallest possible space. The inclined slots 4 form not only a guide for the sectional head-piece, to
junction-with vthe springs l0 provide inclined planes affording a frictlonal brake to facilitate the proper balancing of the bed.l Vhen the bed stands vert-ical it lies inside the pivots 11 of the lower ends of the links 6 so that there is no danger of the bed falling accidentally. The standards A may be mounted on a portable base 12. The latter can either be built into a wall recess, hung on a revolving panel, or mounted ,upon rollers to be moved aboutI from place to place -in a room.
`Having thus described my invent-ion, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent isy A i 1. In a bed, the combination of a pair of standards, a beddisposed between the standjecti'ng laterally toi slide in vertical guides the bed moves in a vertical plane when moved from a vertical to a horizontal position, supporting links pivoted to thebed, and a sectional head-piece having lugs operating in inclined. guides in said standards. 2. In a bed, the combination.of'fa'pair .of standards, a bed disposed betwee standjecting laterally to slide in vertic uides in the standards, whereby the inner iid'of the bed moves in a vertical plane when'moved from ,a vertical to a horizontal position, supporting links pivoted to the bed, a sectional head-piece having lugs operating in inclined guides in said standards, and springs connecting the sectional head-piece and the bed frame and acting in conjunction with said inclined slots as a counter-balance. 3. In a wall bed, the combination of a b ed supported adjacent to its front end on links and having lateral lugs at its head end operanceto facilitate the opening and closing.l
